They were bloody everywhere! Twilight kept trying to look back to locate Cosette, finding it hard to locate her ivory frame in the snow cover of the blizzard. God, he hoped she was alright.

With his own heart pounding against his chest, he kept trying to push back the dogs by ramming them with his head - it wasn't their fault that they had been ordered to attack him....he couldn't hurt them! Unfortunately, they were swiftly getting right back up and charging back at him with vigor and lust in their eyes. Trained to obediently enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and he could very well say they were amazing what what they did....if he hadn't been their prey.

Meanwhile, the four men seemed to be in disbelief as the white equine began to limply gallop towards them. Seemingly aimed at two of the burly ones in particular. The remainder two noticed their opportunity of being unnoticed by the mare, and readied their lasso's as they too ran up on either side of the mare. "Gett'er Frank!" One of them yelled, as Frank threw the lasso with impressive accuracy as it fell over Cosette's neck before tightening as he pulled back feircely. Next, the other man's lasso came down, all four beginning to yell orders to one another. As the pair she'd been aiming for rushed forth, they all worse the same victorious grin on their lips.

Catching Cosette's cry on the harsh winds, Twilight's eyes seemed to widen as his own heart skipped a dreadful beat. "Cosette..." He whispered, before letting out a cry as one of the little wretches managed to snap down on the bottom of his neck. "Get off!!!" He whinnied feircely, his chest heaving as his blood began to boil and burn in a fiery blaze of emotions. With his azure orbs narrowing, he lunged forewards and allowed his body to fall into the snow face first....only to hear a sickening crunch and a yelp.

Stumbling up to his feet as the canines seemed to hush, his eyes wandered down to the dog laying before his hooves....it wasn't moving. As the blood dripped from his neck wounds onto the motionless corpse before him, his hooves slowly moved his body back as his heart was now beating faster then ever, the sound blocking out everything around him. "No......No get up....Breathe....attack...." His eyes remained locked on the dog as his pupils shrunk in horror.

He'd killed...he'd killed when he'd sworn to protect. It wasn't the dog's fault...and Twilight obviously could have outmatched him, but in his fight for Cosette's safety, he'd killed another....did he deserve to die for jeapordizing her safety, no! NO! Everyone could live, how could he bring judgement on who deserved life and who deserved death??

"NO!" He bellowed, the pain and confusion feeling as if it was ripping at his very soul. Stoming his foot on the ground as his head fell down to the snow in anguish, the ebony stallion was too wrapped up to notice one of the other dogs had lept forth, sucessfully taking a bite at his eye. Gasping as he hissed in pain, Twilight tossed his head back roughly to send the dog in a heap on the ground....to which it also didn't get up. Opening his eye slowly as the gash luckily missed his eye and instead resided on his brow and cheek, something inside the stallion seemd to snap as his heart rapidly thudded in his chest while the hot mist of his breath carried off in the breeze. Ears perked and alert as the yell of humans alerted him that Cosette was in peril, his feirce and posessed orbs locked on the dogs.

Silently as the unseen rage swelled in his heart, he reared back and took charge of this fight, as one by one the dogs let out a horrendous cry before falling silent on the cruel bilzzard winds.

Cosette couldn't understand a word that the two leggers spoke, the language foreign on her buzzing ears. Blood pulsed through them and the rest fo her body at an incredible rate, her heart pounding a mile a minute in her chest. Her breathing was erratic, obviously frightened. She hid it the best she could however by sharply breathing threw her nose and out her mouth, her mouth and throat terribly dry. She was sure she couldn't even speak a word, let alone make a noise since her throat was so parched.

As the lasso caught around her neck, for a split second she thought that it would be over; they caught her in a matter of minutes, and couldn't touch Twilight. But then the second came over her head, and her red eyes maliciously narrowed, the sting of tears barely noticeable to her but not unexpected. With the jerk they had tighened the rope, and it sent a shock of fear through her body, mixing well with the other irregularities occuring. She jerked hard against the rope, attempting to ground her hooves better as she retreated jerkily, regretting her poor reasoning. They still hadn't called off their monsters, even though they were just asmuch monsters as their canines.

Through the piercing wind, her heart practiclaly beating in her throat and ears, Cosette did notice one thing, and her eyes widened as she figured out what had happened. It was quieter... Less dogs. She clenched her eyes shut, trying to block out the image of the harmed creatures, possibly dead. Twilight... She let out a raspy breath, trembling as her one hoof slipped, causing her to stumble back, the lasso around her neck chaffing the skin. Her ears flattened against her head, inwardly screaming and hating herself for her lack of strength and ability to handle such a situation. Hating herself for not being able to see through the deafening and blinding snow and wind to see if her companion was safe.

The arctic mare rearedback on her weakened legs, or more so atempted, trying to bring her hoof down on the rope in an attempt to break it. Her first attempt failed miserably, and it took her only once to realize that wouldn't work. Her hind leg, though injured, was numb to the pain inflicted upon her by the dog. It however, was not as strong as the other, but if she ran hard and fast enough.... Perhaps she could drag her captors towards Twilight. But there were four of them! She had tried to occupy two of them... And was failing to deal with them wel enough.

Her thoughts however, trailed to Twilight.
If anything happened to him...
She found her thoughts for that small moment which felt like an eternity centered on the dark stallion, and even though they hadn't spent a lifetime together, she knew it would be very hard forgiving herself if something did happen to him. She could only think of how painful and bleak her future might be if she didn't see him in it, and she felt an ice cold tear brim over her eyelid as she pulled against her restraints.

No, that wouldn't happen.
She wouldn't let it, and surely Twilight wouldn't!
She had faith.

Blood. It was everywhere.

Red splattered the snow, stained his blue tinted legs and over his face where wounds bled freely. His deep breaths caused a huff of steam to rise from his lips as his chest heaved up and down. The dogs lay unmoving in the snow as Twilight could feel his body step into overdrive, his usually calm and wise demeanor long gone as his sense of reason had snapped under the pressure of morality and the urgency of the situation at hand.

On one hoof, he would do anything to keep Cosette safe. What would he do if she suffered the same fate as Elder? If she was stolen away to some god forsaken land and it would all fall on him to blame. What if they killed her...when he swore he'd help her find her family. No...he wouldn't go back on his promise, everything that Elder had taught him about protecting had come down to this.

You just couldn't protect someone if you wern't willing to sacrifice blood, or yourself....and those who inflicted the threat.

And human blood was next.

Twisting his body, Twilight could hear the shouts of the humans...something which would bring their inevitable downfall as he charged through the snow despite the pain aching his face and leg. Deadly focused, he let out a snort as he neared and saw the shadows through the blizzard. Four humans, two with lasso's and two approaching from in front. Cosette was standing, yet one of her legs seemed to be a bit elevated.....she was hurt. Cosette was hurt. They were not going to get away with it. Despite his own sceaming pain which shot up his leg, Twilight charged faster as he blurred in from the side as he let out a near scream of a whinny. Eye locked on the ropes, his head came down to bite down at Frank's hand as he got a bit of satisfaction from his painful scream, but Twilight wasn't done there. With eyes ablaze in an unrestrained rage, he ripped his head to the side to make him drop the rope in fear of dislocating his arm before rearing back on his hind legs and tossing the human away.

Taking no time at all, he whirled around the mare as the next culprit of the hope restraints came to sight. Already the two other men began to back off in sheer horror at the crazy stallion, numb and too shocked to think straight. With a yell Twilight rammed his head right into the ribcage of the other human as he stumbled to the ground with the rope still in hand. With a snarl on his lips, Twilight could feel the boiling blood rush through his body as he sauntered closer as the man looked up with the most freightened look he'd ever seen....and he liked it. Paying little mind to Cosette (despite the fact he did not once let her leave his mind) Twilight reared back as the wind and snow ripped through his mane, his body looming over the two legger as his hooves were in the right position to come down on his head....

"HOLD ON!" A shout came from one of the men as a click echoed through the storm as the other was already helping Frank get out of the area. With little time to register, his eyes frowned softly as he looked down to the man below him......the dog appearing in his mind. This two legged...feared for his very life, the look in his eyes was if he had just lay witness to a Skinwalker...or worse....a Kalona. "H-help!!! Its a demon horse....its a killer!!" He screamed to the other, and as the stallion's eyes widened in a sickening realization the loud bang rattled his eardrums painfully before a hot ripping sensation tore through his shoulder as he let out an agonizing cry....stumbling backwards till he toppled onto his back with a loud thud into the chilly cold while the sounds of sobs and crunching fast moving feet echoed in his ears....his eyes shutting as he could only let the pain consume his senses.

The deafening bang forced Cosette to press her ears against her skull, wincing at the unfamiliar noise. With a powerful jerk back in an instinctive attempt to further herself from the sound, the one rope still holding her had been relieved of its captor's grip. Cosette stumbled back a few steps not even taking the breifest second to revel in the fact she was not restrained anymore. Her eyes searched through the snow, looking for Twilight and the source of the powerful sound. Her breath was frantic, eyes wide as she attempted to locate the tall, dark stallion.

"Twilight?" She croaked aloud, her companion visible two or three yards away, fallen in the snow. Her lower lip trembled as she took a few tentative steps towards him, scrutinizing the scene before her. He was hurt, more than she was. He was still breathing, but why wasn't he getting up? The scenarios in her head were mainly tragic, ending with that he was close to his inevitable end. But he was still alive now, and perhaps she could do something about it... Or at least get back at those who had harmed them both.

The arctic mare huffed, eye narrowing sharply at their attackers. The pain in her hind leg had numbed, thanks to the cold, so when she set it down with every step she took, she could only feel an extremely faint displeasure. One of the men had run off with the injured (rightfully so) Frank, leaving only the one with the loud-noise making object and another. The dogs had all been silenced, and she blatantly attempted to ignore how they had been quieted. If they had just let her and Twilight alone, none of this would've happened! Cosette gritted her teeth as she speculated the one in the distance with the gun. He was the one...

Anger washed through the usually cheerful and upbeat mare as she, without warning, took off towards the one with the dangerous contraption. It was snowing hard, and she, being almost as white as the snow, would be harder to see compared to Twilight, who was as dark as night. Her gallop was a little awkward, as the pressure of her injured leg against the ground renewed the pain in her appendage. She forgot about it momentarily as she ehard a gasp fo surprise from the man she had aimed at, as he probably didn't expect her to come up to him so fast, or even at all. She reared onto her hind legs a bit, forcng herself not to stumble back as she brought down her hoofs against the man's chest, knocking him backwards. She had pushed her legs off of him in a manner that she wouldn't land on him as he lay on the ground, because...

She wasn't going to take his life, even if he took Twilight's.
Because it was wrong? No. Something told her that it was probably because Twilight wouldn't approve.

The contraption had been knocked from his hand, and she scurried to kick it away from his reach and step on the barrel of the gun, nearly bending it inward. The man himself was trying to get back up (he was probably suffering from a few broken ribs), and the other man had cautiously gone around her to pick up his comrade, to go after Frank and their other hunting mate. Cosette's nostrils flared as she tried to regulate her breath and her heartbeat, the scene that had just unfolded before her not registering correctly.

They were gone - that was all she could recognize.
Immediatly she craned her neck behind her to gaze back at her friend, but couldn't get a good look at him. She turned around and lightly ran back over, out of breath.

"Twilight? Twilight?" She repated, lowering her nose to nudge his cheek lightly, eyes searching his face.

Twilight had always been told that when one entered a bleak hour of survival, one would experience a relapse of their entire life. He's always found it to be hard to believe that one would think up those memories intead of using their mental abilities to think of a way to survive....yet he was a bit shocked when his mind began to replay the story of his life.

From the times of his childhood, where he was caught by his father carrying a beetle to safety from the path....where he had received the talk of where not all Soquili were good, and the dangers the animals of the woods and foreigners lurked where the eye couldn't see. Oh how he wanted to much to be big and strong like his father was....to be able to save so many and earn his acceptance!

Then there was his travels...warm memories of Elder and all he had taught him as he grew from a weakling colt up till the time of his death when he was a awkward teen. The deserts where what turned him into the stallion he was today, growing tall and strong amongt the harsh heat and sands. By the time he returned to the places of his birth...everything had changed. Azariel was pregnant, their meeting with his nephews...all of the kind faces he'd met along the way....yet the one which stuck out mot was the stream which he'd first encountered Cosette. The fun they'd shared amongst the fish was one of the things he cherished most about their friendship, she'd shown him the side of life that a majority of other soquili knew at their foal stages....one that he wished he too had encountered.

Cosette....

Opening his eyes slowly as the quiet had settled over the frozen terrain, he could feel the gentle nudge to his cheek, turning his sights to her. For a moment, he said nothing....just watching her face as she seemed to search his own for answers. Ones he just didn't know himself. Was he going to die? Already he could feel the blood from his face and shoulder soaking into the snow and his hair which served as a faint barrier from the snow. The stickiness was becoming unpleasant to his senses, but luckily the cold was beginning to numb the pain in his wounds. Was this death?

Yet something else began to surface, a strange sense of determination which increased the beating of his heart. Looking at Cosette, he knew he wanted more than anything to help her find her parents....he'd promised! But was that all? He promised his father to stay put, and he didn't follow through on that? What made this so different? Thinking back to when he'd first made that promise...he knew it was out of chivalry, yet as time went on and the date pressed closer and closer....the desire had changed. He wanted to be with her....to be near, to see her, to just be in her presence which had drawn him up these mountians in the first place. And even here as he lay bleeding into the snow....Twilight knew there was no place else he'd rather be then in her company.

Realization dawned, that he was falling for the arctic mare....and he was falling fast. Heck, he'd scaled mountians for her, and risk his life for her....he'd cheat death in any was possible to be at her side.

As the determination set into his eyes, he moved his nose to connect with her own as he stared into those gorgeous ruby orbs. "I'm fine...." He spoke softly, but still enough to be heard over the winds. "Lets get out of this storm...." Pushing himself onto the side which didn't harbor a bullet, the stallion tried to balance his weight on his three legs before standing up with a bit of a stagger. He could still feel the dip of the old stream under his hooves, and pushing gently against her neck he gave her the direction which they had to go to hit that cave....he could only pray it wasn't too far away.

"Are you alright...? They didn't hurt you, did they?" He asked after they started moving, immediately concerned for her well being.

Cosette could only stare at Twilight's face as he laid there, his eyes unopened. Her breath was erratic, but she tried to make it sound normal and calm. Puffs of white appeared in the air every time she heavily exhaled through her nose, her nose still at his cheek as she waited to see if he'd wake up. Her lips parted to speak, but closed them again as she knew that the only words out of her mouth would be his name. Nothing else crossed her mind. The only thoughts that passed through her head were only of him. His face, his childish antics, his voice... She felt her jaw clench as she restrained herself from releasing the anguished sob building in her throat.

The arctic mare had been blocking out the girly part of her brain that told her that she liked Twilight more than a friend. The part that told her to blush when he was about, flirt, and make her stumble aboutin his presence. Cosette didn't want to put that kind of pressure and awkwardness down on their newborn friendship, to crush on him like a silly mare fresh out of her foal-days. But the feeling that had been building in her chest was much more than a silly crush. Cosette didn't know how to label it other than a strong liking, as she couldn't really call back on "love" from her parents or siblings.

However, she wasn't stupid and was going to go on thinking of it as an affinity towards the dark stallion, but she knew that she was experiencing that funny thing called love, and at the moment she felt that just as she had gained it she had lost it.

That is until she saw his eyes open slowly. The white hued mare stared at him blankly, unable to register that he had just shown signs he wasn't going to pass on. Her mouth fell slightly agape as he pressed his nose to hers and looked into her eyes. Relief washed over her slender, worn figure, and her knees nearly buckled at the immense sensation. The sound of his voice, though male, sounded like wind chimes and brought about a sudden giddiness. She felt light-headed for a moment, before smiling widely and laughing weakly, "Y-you're... You're not fine," she said quietly but audibly, shaking her head. She could only nod slightly to his words, taking a slight step back to let him get himelf back onto his own hooves. She took a rushed step forward when she saw him stagger, and released a held in sigh when he balanced himself, frowning deeply at his injuries.

She wanted to blame herself for not standing up for herself better, but at that moment he had nudged her neck, she quickly understood that he was attempting to direct her towards shelter. Attempting to lighten the atmosphere and her own mood, she gave a weak laugh, htough she wanted it to sound a bit cocky, "It's gonna take more than a canine to take me down." She said shakily, before glancing at her weaker leg, "Just a scratch... You..." She began quietly, looking at him with concerned but hurt eyes.

"You hurt me more than any bite or scratch, Twilight," her words were a hoarse whisper, and she lowered her gaze, "A physical wound heals. If you died," she nearly choked, swallowing a sob coming up in her throat, "That's not the kind of wound that heals." She looked at him, nudging his neck lightly.

"Thank you...." Twilight muttered softly, thankful Cosette had still been quick on her hooves. It was a strange sensation as her littlest of touch caused his heart to skip a beat.

There!! Thank goodness.

Up ahead he could see the dark spot amongst the blizzard winds, the cave where he'd last stayed during his childhood. The relief which washed over him was heavenly, unable to have to worry about surviving out in this harsh storm with their wounds. Closer and closer they approached, as the dark spot became more and more like a cave....however, even in the excitement his ears perked up as her words; a grin crossing his lips.

"Ah, I see." He mused, his voice taking a more playfully cheeky tone as he leand his head closer to her own as they walked further towards the cave. "I should have expected so from the great fish frightener." Chuckling genuinely from the memories which warmed his heart even in the arctic temperatures, that source of heat was quickly stripped away as he felt that the ice winds were caressing his very soul. Those hurt eyes she turned to look into his own sent his body freezing worse than any wind could do.

"Cosette...." He didn't know what to do. In all honesty, Twilight for once was without any ideas; any words to save him. The shock was even so great that for a moment in time he'd forgotten to keep walking as he only clued in a moment later as she kept moving on. He'd hurt her...? He'd done everything he could to save her! How was this possible! Twilight would have died to make sure that Cosette was as happy and free as she was when they met on that glorious day. Was she so damn inconsiderate that she couldn't see the things he was willing to do for her??? No....even he knew that wasn't it. He could plainly see that even though he would die for her.....what she wanted was him, a sacrifice was the most honorable way to die....but it also impacted those left behind the worse.

Catching up as he had to hobble painfully, he earned a nudge in the neck as he remained silent; dwelling in his own thoughts. Would she have been saddened if he died out of guilt? Guilt and concern were two different things....and if she was as concerned as her choked sob gave her away to be.....did that mean that maybe, just maybe....

She liked him too?

As the winds stopped pelting his sides as they entered the dark atmosphere of the cave; a new kind of warmth began to heat his body. Was this the heat of knowing that you were loved, the feeling of love returned? Turning his head up to look into her eyes through his matted hair, he knew that if the tables had been turned - he'd have lost it all if she'd died. If she didn't know how he felt....how all of that teasing had been a prelude to something greater; something so obvious!

"Cosette....I....." He gulped, feeling his cheeks turn cherry. "I don't want to wase another day - keeping it inside. Its killing me...." Twilight couldn't help but look away, heck....it was easier going up against the dogs then to get those three simple words out! "I wish that I could find the words to say.....I......" Just spit it out!

Shaking his head, Twilight closed the gap between them with his limp, wrapping his head around her neck as he craned his head to nestle into her ivory locks. Giving a soft sigh, he summoned up all the nerves he had left; his voice giving way to his vulnerability for the first time in his life. "I just wanted to let you know...everything that i'm holding; I can't let go."

"You're my everything....Cosette."

Cosette was pleased to be inside the shelter now, the howling and harsh winds not pelting her ears or her coat. He had only said her name after her words, and then he had silenced. She knew her words probably burt as well, but didn't think the'd cause any confusion. She caught his eye through his matted hair and kept still, unsure of what to say or do. The arctic mare didn't like the silence that had followed after her name, and if we was going to say something, it would be best for him to do it soon.

She gave him a sympathetic but confused look as he repeated her name and cotninued on. Something in er gut told her he was going to say that he shared her feelings, and another part told her he was warning her to stay away. The feeling intensified greatly as she felt his head against her mane, and she shuddered a little on the inside. 'Oh please let this not be rejection!' Her mind screamed, and her eyes shut when he began to speak again. His words registered slowly in her foggy head, as she was bit too intoxicated by the close proximity they shared, the scent of blood on his mane...

"Twilight," she said quietly in response, her legs shaking a bit when finally realizing what he said. A wave of relief washed over her, along with a very unfamiliar warmth. She took a step closer to him and pressed her nose against his neck, sighing deeply. A smile began to pull at her lips, almost wanting to laugh at the irony of the whole situation. She, who had lost her family and any known feeling of love, came back up to her home with Twilight. Instead of fidning her family, she found love, and that seemed so much more important than lost memories. With memories lost, why not make new ones?

"Silly stallion," she laughed against his neck, finding herself much more comfortable with the situation than before, "I'll let you in on a secret; You're my everything, too," she crooned in his ear, taking a breif step back, untangling him from her mane. She flicked her tail, a flush on her ivory cheeks.

It was a possibility they would never find her family, but it meant so much more to her that they found each other.

And perhaps... Thanks to this little trip, they would find their own family.
