Faolen smiled at the mare and then thought of how few friends he had made. Too many girls had been running all over the place, but he and his brother had been just fine running and playing together like a couple of little fools. Now, they ran and played together but now they were just like much bigger fools. He grinned at Blackfire lazily and pondered how many others she had run into. Had his childhood been overly sheltered?
His eyes swept up to the tree in question. His father had gotten a good and hard laugh out of the bump on his noggin the day after the apple incident. Not that he’d be telling Blackfire about that small detail. Caelen had teased something about “already trying to impress the lassies.” Pfft. Ridiculous had been his thought at the time, now he found himself wanting to get the large apple… Without making a fool of himself. “Aye lass, We’ll have ter make sure ter keep in touch don’t ye think?”
“Yer right. Considerin’ how long I’ll be livin’ only a year isna all that long.” When Faolen got to drawling and speaking in a relaxed manner the accent that he spoke with, a gift from his father so-to-speak, seemed to deepen a bit. “That’n?” His overly long tail slashed back and forth and slowly he began to rear up. Keeping his stocky body balanced and stretching his neck out. After a few moments and a few wobbles his teeth touch the apple. Unfortunately, Faolen wobbles and lost balance. He came down with the apple, but a few fell also. Not nearly as many as before but some. Putting it at her hooves and winking brightly, “An apple, lass?”

Blackfire had few friends herself, but she thought that was fine. The fewer Soquili she knew, the better, because that way should she choose a close friend--or best friend, which ever came first, really--she wouldn't have to choose. She only knew stallions, though, and that was hard enough, considering. Oh well, better to know fewer than more, she guessed. Faolen was certainly in a playful mood today, she observed, as she rustled her wings restlessly.
She was itching to fly, but again, she was in the presence of a friend, and her manners forbid her from just taking off and feeling the wind. She enjoyed flying very much; it was one of the few pleasures she savored with much gratefulness. Being stuck to the ground must be a sour bore, but then again, many of the grounded Soquili seemed able to have their own adventures. "If you want to keep in touch, sure," she agreed, smiling a bit. "It wouldn't hurt to check up on old friends, and see how they're doing," she added.
She hid a wide smile at Faolen's next words and merely nodded when he noticed the apple she had pointed out. Watching the amazing feat Faolen pulled, though, had her fighting not to laugh. Hard. It was just so overly amusing Blackfire swore she should have just flown up and gotten the apple herself, but she was sure Faolen wouldn't like that. "Kind of you to offer, good sir, but perhaps you should keep your prize," she declined, smiling at his success--sort of--and eying the other apples that had fallen with hidden amusement.

Faolen grinned, but the grin itself was more towards himself and nothingness in general than the mare he’d been talking to. If he had known her thoughts his would have nearly been the exact opposite. Faolen had adopted his father’s love of people and being around them in general save for a bit more reservation with strangers. His dad would walk up to anybody or thing at anytime just for the sake of getting to know someone. Talk about awkward?
His eyes went to her wings and he sensed that she wanted to use them. Okay, so sensing wasn’t really necessary since it seemed blaringly obvious. If he had wings himself they’d probably both just take off flying. Blah blah blah “If if’s and but’s were…” and so the saying went. His smile came and went again easily, “Aye. It’d be tiring for me old body to have to try to make new friends over an’ over an’ over again.” The tone was self-pitying and full of mocking at himself. Making new friends was great, but that awkward “does he/she like me” wasn’t so great.
When she declined that apple he winked and in the next batting of an eye had the apple in his mouth with a satisfying crunch. He chewed and swallowed politely before speaking again. Something that was never bothered with when eating with his brother or sometimes his parents. Manners weren’t overly valued as they tended to let people be a bit fake. “Sir, eh? Well madam. Are ye goin’ ter have one of the other pretties?” The rest of the apples were looking nearly identical to the one he’d half-way eaten.

Blackfire shook her head at how silly Faolen was being, but did nothing other than that. She merely watched the other Soquili with small interest, and then turned to stare into the water again. She couldn't get over how much older she looked. She had been told by numerous Soquili she was certainly easy on the eyes and/or was very beautiul or pretty. However, she couldn't find herself to come to an agreement with those statements, and only ignored them now.
She shifted so that her edginess with her wings stopped. "Your old body?" she asked, eyes dancing at the amusement in that statement. "You're not old, Faolen; you're still young yet and saying that only makes older," she pointed out. "Besides, if you want to mock and hurt yourself, you should do it elsewhere. I don't tolerate that kind of talk with anyone, not even myself." She was contradicting herself a little, but Blackfire knew what she said would probably help Faolen feel a little better about himself.
She shook her head again when he winked at her, eating the apple. She appreciated how he was being polite with her, but she didn't really mind if he ate loudly, messily, silly-like, or any other manner of eating. So long as someone enjoyed themselves with their food, she hardly cared. "No, I think this time around I'm not hungry like I was before," she let loose a soft laugh. "Go ahead if you want them, Faolen; I don't mind if you eat them."

Faolen simply grinned for a moment and finished munching on his apple. Grazing away part of the day had filled him up happily and the apple now was simply a treat that he’d end up running off later when boredom struck. His eyes watched her look away from him and into the water and Faolen wondered just what precisely plagued him. She had lovely looks, working wings, and youth on her side.. Yet something that edged on sadness was there…
His comments had simply been in jest, but the silly girl had taken him for a literal meaning of old. Grinning slightly Faolen decided that nodding and “Yes m’am-ing” her would prove much more useful than arguing or explaining. His eyebrows simply waggled at her and he took another bite of his apple before looking to see his own reflection in the stream. His coat was incredibly smooth, taking after his mother probably. The sheen distracted him for a bit and when his mind finally registered again Faolen felt like a narcissistic fool. Oi..
Slowly, Faolen took the last bite of his apple. Chewing slowly and contentedly before sighing and grinning at her. “I’m jest havin’ a bit o’ a treat meself so I have no need ter have more than me fair share.” The apples would stay on the ground and anything that picked at them would have a treat or the bugs would get them.

She raised an eyebrow at his comment, returning her attention to him as he spoke after chewing his treat. So he had just been joking? How dare he mess with her mind! She only shook her head again in amusement before she made to leave. "I'm sure you are," she agreed, smiling with good humor. Only Faolen would be silly and fun like that.
He always made her laugh, though she had finally gotten over how he spoke. It was a weird, but then, her father spoke strangely from time to time. Her mother had explained that it was called an 'accent' and that Soquili that had 'accents' either learned them from their parents or came from a different place in the world.
She figured Faolen probably picked up the way he spoke from his parents, but then it could have been the former too. Faolen seemed like he did come from another world altogether, after all... grinning at herself in pure amusement--the day itself had been amusing... odd...--as she nodded a good-bye to her foalhood friend. "Well, it's time I leave, Faolen. It was nice seeing you again, my friend."
With those parting words, Blackfire walked towards the forest and slowly faded away into the greenery around them.
