I think he would have. He has all the characteristics of a serial killer. Maticuolous behavior, he was bored with modern life, he was extremely smart. So... I think he would be.

Was it just circumstancial that he got ahold of a decent killing device (the Deathnote, of course xd ), or was it in him to become a killer eventually with anything anyway?

What do you think?
Yes, it was.

During the brief period where he was no longer under the Death Note's influence, he reverted back to being a rational person that favored law and justice. He did genuinely want to help capture Kira during this time. I do think that if he never came in contact with the Death Note, he would have not become a murderer himself.

The power of the Death Note corrupts everyone that uses it.

Not at all as is shown when he passionately tries to catch the new Kira when he was no longer in charge of the death note, its his possession of the death note and the unwavering ideal of killing those who do wrong in great number without being caught that changes him

Light wouldn't have killed all those people if he was not granted the power of the Deathnote.
As he said, he immediatly thought Kira was an evil-doer when his memories of the Deathnote was removed (and would have chased after Kira in any case)

I seriously doubt he would, he had a strong sense of justice and would have seen that was wrong. Then again he had a strong sense of justice and may have seen other people as wrong... Still, I think Light at the beginning would be way too squeemish to kill someone with other means than a death note.

I think that in a way the DeathNote did corrupt him, because he had an easy, nearly-untraceable way of committing mass murder right there. However, I think his personality was already obssessed with power, to the point that he considered other people to be tools. He also thought he was better than everyone else. So, without the Deathnote, he might not have become a mass murderer, but it seems likely that he would have got himself into a position of power, and then abused it.

Hmmm...very interesting. You all seem to be of one mind.

I think that must be right...seeing as he got the Death note and all. But for me there still is that lingering disgust he harbors for "sinful" humans and the insatiable thirst for power...to be a god. I think that might have, just might have made him crack somewhere along the line in later years.

But I may be wrong! 3nodding

I understand what you're saying.

I don't think Raito would kill, but to me, I could see him being a hard-a** detective. He'd work for the NPA like his father, but I'm sure that if he found a suspect guilty, he would not hesitate to plant evidence to get him or her convicted. Kind of like that police guy in SAW II.

I agree with Sheard here.

Also, I've seen several people say that he was striving for Justice. I would agree with this as well. I think Light was destined for power and without the deathnote he would still have been fighting for justice, just without killing people to deliver it.

Covered-Up Boxers
He planned on being the head of the NPA. I highly doubt that, without the DN, Light would have even considered killing criminals. Sure, he would have been disgusted with the world, but as head of the NPA he would have thought 'Eh. At least I'm doing something.'

Hinted spoilers for manga volume seven: Light was all about justice before that pretty little black notebook fell into his lap. Then he kinda went crazy, which you can see clearly in manga... seven, I think it is. The second he gets the Note back his expression becomes evil. I'm not talking about Carrot Top evil, but kicking a puppy while simultaneously stabbing L with a candycane and clubbing Matsuda with a bat made of penguins corpses.

So, yeah. I think I proved my point. pirate

May contain spoilers:

ROFL, no.

I bet he would be against Kira if Amane Misa proceeded with the Death Note. o: Since everything he talks about is justice, he would definitely still be innocent (with no death note) at the same time fighting for justice. I mean, remember the Yotsuba arc where he forgot his memories? He was the ordinary Light we all know from episode 1. XD

I don't think he would.
I just think he'd go on being bored with his life, the Death Note is what really gave him initiative to do something, and that something was killing.
He wouldn't go out and kill himself, the Death Note also made things easier for him.
I would express my opinions more but it's late and I must get to bed. sweatdrop

I think he truly believed he was doing the right thing. Since the only reason he saw the murder provided by the death note as justice was because it had the ability to scare people into believing there would be repercussions to doing things. Just killing people he thought were bad would be disorganized and nonproductive. He'd more likely end up in a position like his father or L, if he had not been given the means to teach the world.

I don't think he would, as many people have said he seemed to like being anonymous.

I agree with Yumi's post, I think he would continue to be bored.
