The scruffy otter looked at the water where the miniature pair was playing and shrugged.
"The little mite doesn't like to run from me. Don't know if that's a curse or blessing. Aye, she's smarter than she acts," he mused and smirked. "Perhaps they'll outsmart each other," he added with a low chuckle.

Maria spun around in the water to grin at Smee before swimming away again, doing lots of little twirls and loops and rolls in the water, showing off for her new friend.

Elizabeth chuckled lightly, looking out over the water, "Well, I'd rather Smee be smart then be an idiot. I don't know what I would do with him if he was." she said.

Smee squeaked as he watched under the water and he copied her movements, swirling about int he water expertly.

Hector laid back down, his head on his paws, tail flipping back and forth.
"She's not overly cunning, which is a blessing. But I can't abide idiots. They slow everyone else down," he said, glancing over at her with a slight tilt to his head and a smirk.

Maria watched him copy her turns and swirls and she blew bubbles at him in retaliation. She then whipped her tail out behind her and propelled herself to the surface, breaking it with a giant indrawn breath.

(( It's so long! xD;; ))

Speaking of idiots and all that, right, Hector?

There was a small jingle that accompanied his step, a sort of musical 'clink-clinking' of his beads as he swept his way hither and thither in the other's general direction. His thick tail was arched into the air in a manner that suggested that perhaps it was that appendage that made him walk the way he did; a bit gracelessly, really, like a charmer's snake: back and forth. Only a snake didn't wobble. Jack Sparrow looked just about ready to tip over with each tightrope-like step he took.

It didn't help that the Captain's hat was tilted far over his eyes. But he knew what he was doing - questioning Jack's peculiarities was like questioning the meaning of life. Far too many men had grown old without ever figuring out the answer to either.

Scampering in his shadow was a smaller, darker otter, dragging along a lumpy bag as though it were only the greatest job up and down this river. The hero worship scrawled across his face was as glaringly obvious as red ink on his forehead.

"Ott'ufs c'm'fin up!" he squeaked loudly from around a mouthful of potato sack. The larger otter paused mid step, one large paw poised in the air; his face puzzled and he spun upon Scupper'd.

"What?"

The little one sat back, bag still clenched within his tiny teeth. He began to motion frantically with his paws, "Ofer th'ar! Udder ott'ufs c'm'fin up, Caf'n!"

Jack's whiskers twitched - was this kit blistered by sunstroke already? He peeked over his shoulder, and his fur jumped to attention. Oh! Right. Of course.

"Next time," he intoned lightly, a slight flourish in his stride and tail as he turned. "Take the bag out, mate. Makes you sound a bit more personable and all." Scupper'd tripped over himself as he nodded, loping after him.

"Miss Swann!" Sparrow's voice sounded curiously delighted, though one could catch underlying rib in the way he stressed her name. "How are ya, love? Been all right, I hope. Haven't missed me too horribly, eh?" He took a seat not far from them, and pointedly ignored Barbossa, attention focused long and hard at the younger otter.

Scupper'd tripped over his paws and more or less rolled to Jack's side; he held out a paw (of which the kit hit nose first) and stopped his ascent. He looked furtively over at the other captain.

"Barbossa." The languidness with which he spoke held a bitter note, like swallowing something particularly thick and gross. Like tar. His little pointed teeth could be seen beneath his furry lips, and it was really quite hard to tell if it were a smile or a scowl.

Maybe a bit of both.

Hector's ears went back against his head when Jack approached and ruined the relaxed mood around the pair, but the motion only showed by a small sway of the feather in his hat.
"Jack," he nearly growled back, but managed a smirk over his bitter reply, he, too, showing his sharp pearly-whites. He glanced at the pup for a brief second before dismissing him completely. He turned back to Elizabeth, ignoring Jack and his miniature tag-along.
"Now what was I saying? Oh, that's right. Idiots."

((I think it's rather amusing that Maria, Smee, and Scupper'd are all the same kind of mini. xd ))

Sitting up to scratch behind her ear, she froze when she heard an all to familiar voice. But instead of feeling any type of joy or passion, she just felt annoyance and she mentally rolled her eyes. "Hello Jack." she said as she laid herself back down, smiling a little at the little otter that came along with him.

She had to hold back a snort of laughter when Barbossa reminded her of their conversation about idiots, "Yes, there seems to be....to many of them in the world." she said, smirking lightly.

"Indeed," Hector quirked a small smirk of a smile at Elizabeth and her retort before rounding his eyes back on Jack.
"So, what brings yeh all the way out here?" he asked, his tone replacing the 'on my part of the river' that he chose not to add. One paw nonchalantly crossed over the other and he tipped his had back a bit so that sunlight could glint just slightly in his eyes. He didn't quite care for Jack and the way he swaggered through life nor his cocky attitude with the ladies. His rival, though Hector would never admit that they were indeed rivals, put too much store in females. That was a weakness, and it irked Hector that he flaunted it as anything but a weakness.

Their little joke was not lost on him, though he gave no indication to knowing they implied him mostly. In fact, he lifted a paw to give a candid stare at the small row of curled nails; an act that could have been seen as a threat (to the most volatile otter, really), but it being Jack.... Well, case in point.

Scupper'd, on the other hand, ground his little teeth (after thoroughly blushing under the fur at the attention that pretty lady otter had given him!) and growled, an action that was cutoff by Jack's tail. Though it had been a leisurely swing, it smacked him full in the face and rolled him over backwards. Sparrow looked, bewilderedly, down at him.

Barbossa's question set his black eyes sparkling, and despite his contempt for the older otter, he leaned forward with a flick of his gaze up and down both lanes of the river.

"A knucker," he said surreptitiously in a timbre of gravel. He didn't say much more on the topic, though he began to harbor the inability to sit very still, as if sitting still were the greatest waste of time.

The older otter looked at Jack rather skeptically after he stated his reason for being there. He thoroughly enjoyed the subtle and not-so-subtle reactions to his and Miss Swann's barb.

When Jack hit the little otter, he was at war with himself. Part of him wanted to laugh as the small thing tumbled over, and yet another part wanted to whap Jack upside the head, make him feel how much it hurt head and pride. Instead, his eyes narrowed a bit and his teeth flashed slightly when he replied to the answer.
"Oh really, now? A water dragon? What makes you think they live on the river? Or..." he paused, a bit of smugness flashing briefly in his eyes, "Were you referring to a knuckerhole?"

But Lizzy silently narrowed her eyes when Jacked whapped the other otter away and she had to hold herself back from pouncing on him and tearing into him. Instead she turned her head to see Smee waving at her and she decided to get up and try and join him. She padded her way behind Jack and her tail happened to make a big swing right at the back of his head.

Jack rolled his shoulders in an airy shrug, his eyes following suit as they flicked upwards. He seemed exasperated, his tiny fangs slightly bared as he sighed in the most dramatic of fashions.

"Barbooossa," he drawled, bending his forelegs and leaning forward. "Hector. Where there is a knucker, there is a knuckerhole. Either way I'm bound to find either or sooner or later."

He held up his paws, their pads torn and calloused and canted his head, "And what's to disprove they don't? If you'd like to help, you can scrounge around the ocean if you'd like. Never underestimate the underestimated and whatno-- BUH!"

The otter hit the shore nose first at Elizabeth's well-placed swing, earning him a mouthful of damp earth. Scupper'd hopped to and dropped the bag, rushing to his captain's side in a hen's panic.

"Love tap," he answered from around cheekfuls of soil. "She's missed me sorely."

Hector grinned at both Jack's opening and the whack he had received. He rose and stretched his back until he felt something pop. No pain or anything, just pop.
"Ah, sorry. Forgot I can't use big words around you, Jack," he said before padding to the river's edge. He carefully removed hat and jacket and looked around. With a nod, he scooped up the articles and somehow managed to jump from a rock, to a tree trunk, bounced off of that and to a branch. There he laid his hat and coat and removed his boots, placing them snug between two branches. He then carefully walked along the limb, out over the water.
"A knuckerhole, Jack," he said, sounding just like a teacher with an overly stupid pupil. "Is a type of spring," he finished and dove into the water.

Maria surfaced just as Barbossa was giving Jack his little speech. She knew her Cap'n when he was like that, in a playful-ish mood whenever he mocked another and for once it wasn't aimed at her. She quickly swam out of his diving area, barking with laughter.

Elizabeth looked over her shoulder at Barbossa, with a look that clearly said 'Are you kidding me?'. She went to the shore when Smee swam over to her and chuckled when he gave her a salute. She then slipped into the water, not really caring how wet her cloths got, she could take them off anytime.

His nose curled and he followed after Barbossa - well, as much as he could without getting into the water - not to be outdone.

"I've checked every source already," he said with a sniff, ambling too and fro to keep up with the elder captain's movements. Scupper'd tripped after him with ungainly footing, until he heard Maria laugh. He halted and blew out his cheeks, whiskers twitching - was she laughing at HIS capt'n?

That otter was his size! He could definitely take it on! Dropping his responsibilities of caring for the bag, he splashed into the water and darted after the other, surprisingly fast.

Jack followed his tiny form, pleasantly distracted before he turned back to Barbossa, dodging Elizabeth as she slipped into the river. He was about to open his mouth to continue on about how 'things are always where you least expect them', when he dove into the water.

Maria was all happy and laughing at her captain's good humor, until she saw the anger and determination in the other little otter's eyes as he darted towards her. She shrieked, letting out a short sound in distress, not thinking of anything but getting away. Pirate or no, she was really a little softie.

And hard-personality or no, Hector was of the mind that Mar getting into trouble made him look bad as he was supposed to be making her into a proper pirate or whatever, so when he heard her frightened cry, even under the water as he was at the moment, he turned and jetted to the shape of the small otter pursuing her. He broke the surface between them and whapped Jack's little follower with his paw, ears back and eyes narrowed.
"You lay a paw on her and I'll knock you so hard you'll have a week-long headache afterwards," he growled, glaring at Jack's lackey, Mar whimpering behind him. True, he'd gone after women before, but he usually had a good reason, like they stood between him and treasure. Otherwise he just pushed them out of the way. Women only brought trouble and were often very annoying.
"And you," he growled in a slightly softer tone, looking over his shoulder at Mar. "Stop whimpering. You should be able to lick this little runt. Next time I catch you running away, I'll give you the smack and let you fend for yourself."
