Shoujo Kakumei J-chan I've never heard that shaving of the legs and armpits for women is forbidden by any source, though. o_o In fact, around here it's more or less mandatory before you dip in the mikveh for women to shave those areas unless they just don't do it, ever. That's the point I was making, actually. There are men who feel that the Torah prohibition against "making a mark in one's flesh in remembrance of the dead" actually extends to shaving for cosmetic or comfort purposes -- but they'll still insist that their wives should shave. Personally, I like to be shaved, and I would expect my husband to keep his facial hair well groomed. I'd expect him (or my sons, if I had them) to leave the peyot long, but trim the dead ends off occasionally, and to keep the beard but make sure it was neatly trimmed and not allowed to grow wild or get tangled. Good grooming speaks well for anyone, and there's no excuse for poor grooming.

As explained by my rav...
The act of shaving isn't prohibited, it's the act of scraping your skin with a razor. If you use clippers you're perfectally ok.

Or those other things that work better, but still don't save close? I mean, if you dress modestly, then technically it's no big deal if you have hairy legs, because no one sees your bare skin, right? (For women) I just find it a nusiance really...It's not really vanity...

To be honest.. Hairy women kinda scare me a bit..
I don't mind if a guy was hairy, as long as they don't look like you know.. sasquatch.. At the same time, a man shouldn't be hairless.. (I find men with shaved armpits look weird.)
Body hair on woman doesn't work for me though.. Women are beautiful in a different way.
There is a masculine beauty, and a feminine beauty. :3
I hope that didn't make me sound too shallow. But I am shallow I'm not going to deny that.
As far as tattoo's IRL go.. I would consider getting like a band around my upper arms.. I'm not sure if I want to make it like a regular band, or a tribal design.
I've looked into tattoos (because I had an ex-friend that fell for me that wanted some really ugly ones.), and I found that with tattoos, the more color and detail you add to it, the worse it is going to look as you age. So don't get too much detail, and try to stick to one color.
My ex-friend wanted a big tattoo of a dragon, and a big tattoo of a tiger. He claimed he identified with those two animals. I laughed in his face. I really thought of him more as a possom or a skunk rather than a dragon or a tiger.

[Raito] I think that the tatoos are pretty cool, seeing as I already have 3. I didn't know that tatoos were against Judaism though. Do any of the Jewish people here have tatoos? From the Jewish Book of Why, Vol 2, page 168 Leviticus 19:28 states : "You shall not cut into your flesh for the dead, nor cut any marks on yourself; I am HASHEM" Ancient people, especially in Egypt, Persia and Rome, often cut into their skin and mutilated their bodies to demonstrate grief. They also cut into their skin and filled the incisions with indelible dyes, creating tattoos of the dieties they worshipped. These represented pagan whorship, but also ran counter to the biblical prohibtion against spilling blood and mistreating your own body. Since tattooing in modern times involves pricking the skin rather than cutting into it, and since idolatry is no longer practiced among most people, there is some doubt wether the biblical ban against tattoos applies in today's standards. And yes, I know a few tattooed Jews but they're not gaians.

I would like to get one... The whole being jewish and not allowed to get one bugs me. One of the owners of Miami Ink in Miami, Fl is a jew and he was tattoos everywhere. His name is Ami James, and he was born in Isreal and was in the Isreali army for a little while. He has said numerous times that he is jewish, and that having tattoos doesnt bother him.

Yes, but Ami also wouldn't tattoo a Chasid who came into his shop. Ami isn't Orthodox (orthodox means 'following the law'), but this man was, and getting a tattoo would have made him a liar. "I follow the laws... but I broke one, isn't my tattoo great?" Ami wasn't willing to help a fellow Jew to do something that was against the Torah prohibition, and I say, good for him.

kingpinsqeezels So waxing is cool, right? That's not scraping skin or anything... The Jewish Book of Why has no topic in regards to women's legs. So therefore I'm going to leave it to your own interpretation. "So waxing is cool, right?" = very yes Now shaving your legs with squirrels wielding light sabres might be different whee heart
