Ahaha~ I think I'm actually one of extremly few people who doesn't think it's stupid. Videogames to some people are like drugs, they do get very addicted to the point that they may need to go for help. Hell I'd admit to it, I'm addicted to the point that it's severely affected my grades, concentration...Hell my overall preformance in school. I'm just not going to ask for help. [:

That's exactly what I thought and now my mom is convinced that I am addicted! I mean if you like video games then that isn't called an addiction it's called a hobby! I'm so glad you guys see it the way that I do.

Thus commence angry rant. Please read it; it kind of clinches the subject up.
Just so you all know, the way that they 'submit' new mental disorders is that a bunch of experts gather around a table and go through a list...
"Attention Deficit Disorder. When someone has a hard time focusing on one thing. That sound good?"
"Yeah, sure. Put it in the books."
"How do you treat it, Bob?"
"With sleeping pills."
... and so on. I'm serious here; it's the truth.
There is no testing. There are actually very few things that are really DISORDERS. Know OCD? Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? Hate to break it to you, but that is a PERSONALITY FACET. People call it a disorder because it is a disruptive personality fascet and HEAVEN FORBID- someone has something annoying in their nature.
Why do I know this?
They almost diagnosed me with ADD when I was in second grade. It wasn't because I had a problem. I couldn't pay attention because they kept trying to teach me phonics when I had already read 'The Hobbit.' No one cared that I didn't have a problem. They just all think a drugged up kid is easier to deal with than a 'sober' one.
As for videogame addiction being a 'mental disorder' I would like to remind them there are people out there addicted to TV, there are people out there addicted to books, there are people addicted to the computer...
These are not all different things. These are the same thing: liking something to an extreme and not having the willpower to restrain yourself. This has happened since the beginning of time. Some caveman out there was eating and eating and eating everything in sight because he was addicted: he liked the act of eating so much he couldn't help it.
The way to deal with this is NOT to drug kids up. It's to give them the hard-up truth and say ONLY TWO OR THREE HOURS A DAY. FINAL.
It's the parent's faults if they can't restrain their children. When it all comes down to it, the parents have the final word and if they have to resort to blaming something out of their control to cover up their own weakness, they should never have had children in the first place if they had such feeble strength of will.
Rant over.

Gemini_57 To hell with the media. If people who play videogames excessively are addicts, then, as Kiarra said, most everyone in this guild is one. I mean, yeah my grades are poor, I've never gotten an 'A' in my entire time in Junior high, But that has no connection to my Videogame playing. On another note: Everyone says that Tv and Videogames rot you brain. Nobody realizes it, but Television, videogames... thats how most kids learn things nowadays. Once again; To hell with the media. I remember the one year I made it to county science fair one dude had his scince project be on video games. Turns out RPGs increase ur memory but deplete your reaction time while 1st person shooters increase ur reaction time but deplete your memory. Though if that was true I wouldn't remember the level layouts of my fav shooters.

Rant over. Everyone's OCD about something. I have Complex Tic Disorder, it's like Torrets (I cant spell) My doc told me that there is no medicine specifcally for tics. That the various medicine they use to treat it are actually just meds that have been found to sometimes treat tics. meaning that a few might not wrok for a particular person and if so they'll have to try another one. Mind the meds I'm on work really well. ADD does exist with some ppl, my mom being one of them, but there are a few who are misdiagnosed cause some like to shove pills down ur throat. not all but some.

Some people have addictive personalities so it is easy for them to get attached to something and become obsessed with it. But honestly, a kid should not be medicated just because he won't put down his Wii remote. Parents and gaurdians, maybe peers, just need to step in and talk some sense and establish some rules.
That is just crappy parenting, stuffing pills down your kids throat instead of actually trying to communicate and discipline them.
Video games can be addicting, but I do not think that it is on the same level as alcoholism or being addicted to cocaine.

Lately my mother has been calling my older sister & I addicted, but here's the truth, we have nothing else to do! We live out in the middle of nowhere & my older sister doesn't have her license yet, so we can't go anywhere. (You have to wait a month when you're 16 here before you can take your driver's test.)

Sheesh, I still have a 4.0 and I play Pokemon way too much for my own good. If I can stop for finals week, it's not an addiction and I don't need to be put on medication for it. stare

Gaming isn't a disorder. I've played video games all my life and there's nothing wrong with me caused by my addiction. It's really just the faults of the addicted and their families that the addiction has gotten so far as to this. They are responsible on putting limits on gaming.
So here's what I say to the article writers: Feh.

This actually isn't all that unexpected. I mean 2 years ago in my 10th grade english class I did a report on violence in video games about how I didn't agree with how the violence made games harder to buy. And thank the Lord, G4 had a special on it, there were 2 but darn tootin, I missed the first one. But what it did was say how violent games didn't cause shootings, it lowered the number. Off topic, sorry, but what I'm saying, is that they said at the end, movies, TV, and music went through this sort of critisim, it's just video games' turn.
I can understand how some people think it's a problem, I mean playing video games all the time does make you less social to a point, but then like Sakyh said, they do teach you stuff. I mean all the puzzles RPGs, like FF have to offer and how fast you have to dodge darn boulders in RE4, but hey, give it time and it'll pass.

You know, if someone kills themself over a videogame, it's cuz that person has mental problems and not the video games.
O, and I hate that whole "Video games make people stupid." crap. I've made straight A's all my life and I've been playing video games since before I could read. Actually, I learned to read playing pokemon in kindegarden, so I was actually advanced thanks to video games. Booyah!
And people complain about anything when they get bored enough. The same thing happened with the radio and the TV. Now it's happening with cellphones, texting, and the i-POD. We're humans, we need intertainiment.

For one, anyone could become addicted to anything. I've seen people addicted to certain foods to the point that its unhealthy. The newspaper is trying to make it sound like some epidemic thats corrupting the world. I hate how people say that video games makes people stupid, or violent. Well maybe that person is naturally lazy or dumb, has mental issues, or they may be just a violent ********. I've played video games my whole life, and my school work is above average, I've got more creativity than other kids in my school; games like brain age and Phoenix Wright really make me think hard and use reason to win. They can have a positive effect too.
