thelovelyLIZ I think Ryu thought I meant a previous marriage of Mary's. That I did. Which would be interesting in itself if Jospeh was a widower... in those days teenagers were often married off to guys 10 or more years older than they were... so really Joseph could have been anywhere from 20 to 40. You don't hear much about him after Jesus turns 30, so I usually just assume that he's old for the time and slowly heading toward death. *shrug* Still an interesting prospect.

Yeah, marrying teenagers to older men wasn't uncommon, especially if Joseph had been widowed young- then it would have been almost socially inacceptable if he DIDN'T take another wife.

I know this thread is old but I figure it's worth saving from deletion. Was Joseph not somewhat concerned about what people would think about taking Mary to be his wife?

Was Joseph not somewhat concerned about what people would think about taking Mary to be his wife?In regard to a possible age difference? Or the fact that she was pregnant before he slept with her? Because according to Matthew he was going to divorce her quietly when he found out, but an angel of the Lord came and told him what was going on.

To my knowledge it doesn't specify why he was going to divorce her, but my best guess would be because she was pregnant before he slept with her.

Well, I'm a Catholic, so I guess I supposed to believe that Mary didn't have any children. But me being the little teenage rebel that I am, I don't believe a lot of stuff that they teach (i.e. woman can't run the church, etc.) I find a lot of Catholic beliefs contradictory.

She ended up marrying Joeseph, so my instict says no. She also had more children, and they certainly weren't conceived from God. So no.

I know for a fact that consumation of marriage has to take place for two to be married. In Matthew it says that Joseph waited till after Jesus was born to consumate the marriage. So no, Mary wasn't a virgin her whole life.
Also, if you think about it, if the scriptures hint to the brothers being older, couldn't they be Josephs sons and not Mary's?
