SO much for being casual; no matter how hard Trev seemed to try, Draven was just NOT understanding! Such was the story of his life (in a suitably dramatic foal mentality, anyway)...but at least that meant that he was USED to it.

Opening his mouth to inform Draven as to just what he meant, Trev paused, then glanced back over his shoulder. It probably wouldn't be good if his mama heard him, or Memory; this was STALLION stuff, and they really wouldn't understand or be helpful ANYWAY.

After making sure that no one was behind him, he scuttled around Draven quickly, glancing about in a rather furitive fashion that probably looked rather silly...but it got the job done. And once he'd made certain that they were alone, he edged closer to the older stallion and whispered, "you're a good fighter, right Draven?"

Of course, Trev KNEW Draven was a great fighter, because he was Draven and consequently awesome, but it was always good to 'ease' into this sort of thing. At least, he was PRETTY sure that was the right way...

"Fighter?" His brow lofted slightly as he followed the foal's glance back towards the area where he expected Memory and Nostalgia to be. This wasn't the best conversation for a mother to be privy to, even if he'd wind up talking with Nostalgia about it later. "Hm... Let's go for a walk, alright?"

He turned towards the woods, each step slower than his usual pace so that the foal could easily catch up. Once he was certain that they were out of hearing range he looked to the colt. "Fighting isn't as important as having a good defense. Fights of any sort can lead to danger and, first and foremost, it is our duty to protect the herd. Not all stallions know this... Some know but they seem to have forgotten. It's a lesson that everyone should learn."

Nodding his head solemnly, Trev scuttled after Draven, pleased to be taken seriously. Then again, Draven UNDERSTOOD how important this was, so it made sense he was attentive.

Keeping up with Draven's longer stride was tough, but he managed to pull it off; as the older stallion slowed to a stop, he did as well, listening with an intense seriousness.

However, from the sound of it Draven was missing a point. Maybe. "I KNOW we need to protect the herd, Draven; I was thinking about Mama and Memy, and how they're mares and stuff like that. I don't want Mama to have to be afraid of any mean stallions." Setting his jaw, Trev's eyes took on a dark gleam as he thought of ONE mean stallion in particular, how he had tried to bully his mama. No sir, NO ONE was going to do that to HIS mama or sister! "So, I need to know how to pr'tect them right. You can teach me that, right?"

"First, just because they are mares doesn't mean that they aren't able to take care of themselves. Your mother is a very strong mare and she's done just fine on her own... I offered to help her because I know how much trouble little colts can be." He grinned down at Trev. "As long as you keep that in mind, yes, I can teach you how to protect them... The herd is our family and that includes Memory and your mother... And whoever else may join it along the way."

Trevelyn's reply to that was to stick out his tongue. "Mares are littler than stallions, though, which means that they can be HURT, Draven. I know Mama is tough, but she's still little. And Memy is littler than me, and I'm still a colt!"

Oh well. Regardless, that was NOT the point right now. "Right. I want to know how to protect me, and Mama, and Memory...and even YOU, just in case." This with an impish grin at Draven, to let him know that Trev meant business! "So...teach me!"

"They might be smaller than stallions... But you can't tell me that you don't cringe, even a little, when your mother's upset." He laughed as he leaned down to give the foal a gentle nudge. "It can't all be taught in one day, you know. Things like this need to be learned over time and I've already started teaching you little things as you've grown so far. You're getting better at moving silently... And you're more alert than you used to be..." That was a good start.

It was strange, teaching something like this to a foal. He knew it was important, especially given the nature of Trev's father, but it would be hard... Even harder once Nostalgia found out and he wouldn't be able to keep something like this from her. "Can you run fast, Trev? How strong are those legs of yours?"

"Yeah, but that's cause she's MAMA. Besides, I'm still growing!" Puffing out his chest, Trev stalked in a small circle in what he hoped was a suitably inspiring fashion, showing that he was a colt that wasn't to be messed with. But upon hearing Draven's question, he abandoned that pursuit and scampered back over to the stallion's side.

"Well, I can't run SUPER fast, but I can run for a really, really long time without having to stop, so I think that they're pretty strong. And they don't get sore easy, so I guess that means they're tough?" Not that he was really sure...

"Why don't we start with that then... I'll race you to the stream." He grinned as he stomped at the ground with his hoof. "On your mark... Get set... Go!" He would wait a few seconds to give Trevalyn a decent start ahead of him, knowing very well that he could easily outrun the foal. That wasn't the point though... The point was working on strength and inspiring belief in abilities.

On the word 'go' Trev took off as fast as his little legs would carry him, knowing full well that Draven was probablt faster...but the stream was a ways away, so he might just get tired. "Better hope your legs last, Draven! You'll see, I'm gonna suprise you!"

And surprise him he would, no doubts there!
