Ooo, Dresden Dolls are so wonderful! I've seen them, and I heart both Amanda and Brian. I would delight to snuggle them both smile But I think the two I listen to most when in my steamy moods are 'DeVotchka' (Which means 'little girl' in Ruskya) and Jason Webley. The former is easy to find (they've become startling more popular since 'Little Miss Sunshine') but Jason Webley's music is a bit harder. It's very gypsy (I think that may be an in appropriate term, as most folk on Gaia seem to be American and you do seem more sensitive about labeling things... If there's a 'better' term, please let me know; I don't which to offend anyone. Perhaps 'Roma'? It does not cover the entire culture, just one particular blood of that, though. In any event, please let me know if there is a preferred term for these!) and I LOVE this music. They have such a delightful fire in dance and music! I am not sure it matches with anything, but it feels so good and matches the freneticism of mad science smile

kobold505 color-me-wretched kobold505 @ Crane: To answer your question regarding my sanity, Yes, yes I am insane. @Color: Thank you, though I do enjoy Dr. Steel! ^_^ You make a Toy Soldier proud, Kobold. I was thinkin' about signing up to be a Toy Soldier myself. n_n You totally should! It's so much fun. And we actually do stuff in the summer months, so it's really easy to get involved. In fact, my division will be going to both Midwest Horrorfest and Matsuricon this month. It's great! 3nodding

I jovially agree upon Abney Park, The Dresden Dolls, and Dr. Steel.
My current favourite, though, would have to be Tom Waits. He just came out with a wonderful new album. But his song "God's Away On Business" has always struck me as very SteamPunky. Lyrics sample: "The ship is sinking, the ship is sinking, the ship is sinking...and there's a leak, there's a leak in the boiler room."
Simply love, his voice is. Gritty and very real. Also, paired with organ grinders, saxophones, and several steam-engine whistles, he is a must-have.

His music makes me happy....in a....sad sort of way? I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore. Tom Waits is awesome, though.

To me, a lot of music can be considered 'steampunk', if it conjures up the proper images. But then, I'm notoriously easy to please when it comes to media... ^^; And I have never heard the music of Abney Park, the Dresden Dolls, or Dr. Steel. Have to get on that... sweatdrop
But anyway, I find some songs by the Eels rather steampunky ('Flyswatter' springs to mind)... Also, call me crazy (I probably am), but I listen to Cirque du Soleil soundtracks, and their Quidam album strikes me as decidedly warped-early-20th-century tunes. It's good stuff.

I believe my music would have to be Emilie Autumn, Abeney Park, and Dr. Steel.
( I discovered Emilie on my own, without the help of my friend who introduced me to Steampunk. )

I made this compilation a month or so ago, if anyone is interested in hearing what I would consider Steampunk/Neo-Victorian inspired music: Feel free to d-load it here.

HEY! I saw this in an LJ community a while ago!
On Abney Park, I honestly do not enjoy their music at all. They sound like numetal crossed EBM to me. I mean, sure they have the aesthetic. But I simply can't stand their sound. Sorry. sweatdrop

Has anyone heard of the Pine Box Boys? They're not really steampunk, but it is an older style of music they have, kind of hillbilly music with really morbid themes. (As one song goes, "Stab once, stab twice! WIth a heart as cold as ice, and a little voice giving me ideas!") As someone who's generally more interested in American history, I could see yankee mad scientists appreciating a good song about murder and mayhem. Besides, don't more bands need banjo players named Possum? domokun (I reccomend "I Kept Her Heart." )

Check out Speiachord.com for a good substantial list. They generally call that music Weird Americana.
