((Aye, I knew this would happen if I had joined this thing. It was so obvious sooner or later we would disagree on something. >_>

And no, I am not revealing my secret yet. Muahahaha.))

(( I hate to split in quotes, because it always sounds condescending when it does, but... needs to be done. ))

But then he had nothing to worry about when that wooden sword swings down. An assumption would be made that the wooden sword wasn't exceeding three feet, or equaling, so at that moment of time

At that moment in time it appeared as if Yariel would be unprepared to receive an attack. The weapon, in itself, was slightly over three feet in length; thirty eight inches to be exact. The first eight inches were designated to handle space (and thus, his grip was about seven inches up upon it) and the other thirty were intended to be a proxy of a weapon blade, albeit made for a practice copy. Not quite three feet of distance in that, no... but with the casual extension of his arm being roughly two feet in its own right, that left nearly five feet of range for the weapon to hit with.

Cdore
Yariel's left foot would step so he could shift in direction in more of a way to keep a direct facing to Tiem, since he was still slowing down to a stop, but this left hand pushes to the right also.

Why? Because it was redirecting his lance that missed to his right as it follows in that shift, aimed right for the back of Tiem, since it was what faced the weapon as the wooden sword had swung.

As promised, Tiem was not going to stand within striking distance of a spear like that twiddling his thumbs. The moment his counterswing was complete, the boy would step in against the opponent in order to neutralize his weapon. With a spear, the most dangerous part of the weapon is the tip. It has the advantage of reach and speed over many other types of weapon, but it also carries the disadvantage that it cannot be used effectively in close combat. As Yariel was still taking a step forwards in order to turn, and Tiem was taking a step forwards in order to close the distance, that three feet between them would be gone in the bat of an eye.

The spear head was dangerous while he was within its reach, though, so even though he was focused on delivering his own attack the boy was not about to ignore the largest threat that had presented itself. With the weapon in his left, his right hand was still free in front of himself, and he would use it to keep that spear at a distance. All he had to do was drop his arm near his side and use the forearm to keep the spear shaft at a distance. Even if Yariel turned the weapon, if the head was kept distanced from his body it couldn't hurt Tiem. By the time their steps were complete, it would be several feet to their sides and well out of harm's way.

Cdore
If timing was important, Yariel did not have to worry about any second from his counter. Just a push of his left hand with the motion of his body was all it took.

Keeping both hands on that weapon, about waist level, was what left Yariel open to a close encounter of the painful kind. Once the spear was suitably incapacitated between the close bodies of the two fighters, Tiem's right arm would no longer be necessary to keep the weapon at bay. Instead it would shoot upwards along Yariel's midsection to grab a fistful of clothing at mid-torso and twist tightly into it; to make sure that sweaty palms wouldn't let the enemy get away when he was already so close.

What would happen next depended entirely on how squarely the boy's first blow had struck Yariel.

If it had, then the boy's left would swing in; his fist clenched tightly around the hilt of his wooden sword but not striking with the weapon at all. It was a punch intended to deliver a heavy blow to Yariel's right collarbone, the same place he had attacked earlier. The combination of two hard hits to a single point on that bone would virtually guarantee a fracture; and with his hands at waist level and his upper body pinned, there wasn't much room to wriggle out of this one.

If it hadn't, then instead the blow would be aimed higher, with more of a rising motion, aimed to crack the butt of the wood hilt across Yariel's jaw.

((Where it all began....))

An evasion into an attack, a nice counter that Tiem had executed. Had the stab been full fledged, the half elf could have ran into it. But, he was not that slow to react. His speed was slowing, but he was already on the verge of changing his direction for a counter of his own. The wooden sword had reached, but Yariel still could see it. He had the advantage of distance well enough for him to use both an evasion and counter for himself. He leans to the left, so that his feet may quickly trample to perform a diagonal shift, while his left arm follows with pushing the lance straight at the stomach of Tiem. Yariel wasn't losing balance. He was going to stop himself with his right foot after three steps.

But Tiem's right arm saves him, keeping the spear to the side. Simple, but as he moved in, the end lowers with Yariel dipping his left hand. That meant that the spear would be off contact of Tiem's body, and that his opponent was also about to enter into close range. Tiem believed Yariel to be defenseless. He believed that the elf had no chance with both hands resting on his lance.

But Yariel had evasions, too. He steps his right rear foot behind his left, and then his left follows to swiftly avoid the grab. And at the same time, his left hand and right rises to neck level to level the lance horizontal nearly, the blade end tilting to the ground, and the butt end of the lance goes to clothesline Tiem into the neck. The motion again was evasion with the raise of the lance to show that this move was done in the same speed as both of their movements. The result would be painful throb in his throat, as the impact could cause a terrible pain in the trachea.

Now it was a clothesline, and whether Tiem would fall or not was up to his author. But it was sure that once that end would hit, the lance would be pulled away back toward his body, Yariel stepping his right foot behind his left again so he could place himself in the area to the right of Tiem and behind him. From Tiem's perspective, that was SE as if he was facing north.

But Yariel had evasions, too. He steps his right rear foot behind his left, and then his left follows to swiftly avoid the grab.

Which would move him roughly six inches in the direction that Tiem had been chasing him; much slower than a normal strafe, jump, or backpedal would actually have moved him. The advantage of a step like that lies solely in control of where you are facing. It can be used to move and turn at the same time, or to move while not even turning slightly away from the opponent, but it is not the kind of maneuver that is used for a speedy sidestep.

However, because of the spin it was true that Tiem's grab was no longer veering straight for the left side of Yariel's chest, and it was also true that his little ballet spin had shirked off the grab. The one thing that wasn't true though, was that Tiem was throwing a punch. He had thrust his hand forwards with the intent to grab a hold of Yariel, and a little bit of juking and jerking wasn't going to put him back at ground zero. His hand was already out there, right beside Yariel... all he had to do was grab something, anything, and pull him in.

To block a grab, you need to stop the hand, not just avoid it.

Cdore
And at the same time, his left hand and right rises to neck level to level the lance horizontal nearly, the blade end tilting to the ground,

Nearly, but not quite. You see, the boy still had an arm out there. That meant that it was in the way of anything that wanted to come up above chest level.

Assuming he got a good grip on Yariel's robes, the arm would block the movement of the spear shaft at the price of an itty boo boo bruise. Assuming he didn't, the arm would block the movement of the spear by intercepting it and grabbing on between Yariel's two hands.

...but what of Tiem's 'phantom' left hand that had been absent up until this point?

Cdore
and the butt end of the lance goes to clothesline Tiem into the neck. The result would be painful throb in his throat, as the impact could cause a terrible pain in the trachea.

Technically, being unble to raise the forward end of the spear his angle would be off, and it would be strictly impossible to perform a clothesline to the trechea, or even hit the trechea at all like that. If he went straight at it, he'd end up smacking the kid in the face with the end of the stick. Maybe a bloody nose, maybe just a stinging sensation, it'd all depend on how square the hit and how much power a quick tap could have behind it at such an awkward angle.

What was far more likely, however, was that his backend swing would end up coming up at an angle and instead impact on the side of the neck or the back of the jaw, below the ear. Ouch. Gives me a headache just thinking about it.

Of course, this also left Yariel open... again.

(Announcer Voice) "What fate will befall the masked spearman Yariel? What horrible plans does this nappy youth have in store for his victim now? And what is this 'phantom left' that was alluded to? All these questions and more will be answered next time: On BLOODBATH!"

Yariel was not intending to gain distance any longer, so those steps were purposeful. Tiem would stil miss the grab because with his right foot moving in a clockwise manner, his right side was well out of the way, so all that was left was for Tiem to grab at the staff between the holding places of both of the elf's hands. Yariel's right foot would slide back, then, seeming to lower his stance, his right hand pulling back while his left raises to steer the polearm toward horizontal status. In other words, he was intending to jerk Tiem by his right hand that had grabbed the weapon and push him to Yariel's right using the leverage. Yariel's left side may have looked open but those were always illusions; and wherever Tiem's left hand was, Yariel would know. After all, it wasn't invisible.

for Tiem to grab at the staff between the holding places of both of the elf's hands.

Cue the 'phantom' left.

Rather than some fantastic maneuver involving sixteen precisely aimed strikes intended to kill a man before he could blink and without him even realizing it until the blood ran cold in his veins and his eyes bulged out of his head...

Rather than that, the left hand moved behind Yariel's right. There was a hardly noticeable clatter as the wooden sword plopped onto the grating beside them, and then both had two hands on the spear.

"Pshawhawhaw," laughed the kid, "tuggo' war."

A mutter could have been heard behind that mask of this elf, but Yariel liked to keep things ninja-like. Better to keep with the silent act, after all. He strafes to the left fourty five degrees, testing with a pull.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 28, 2007 5:13 pm

A pull? He could have the pull, and it would be met with a push.

Tiem had advanced until now, and he would continue to do so even now; driving forwards relentlessly even while Yariel attempted to shake him off. For every step back that the elf took the boy would step forwards. For every pull he tried to rip the weapon from his grip the boy would shove on and force the elf back another step.

Until his back was at the wall.

Until he had nowhere to run.

Until his time was up.

Yariel would have no room to breathe.

Yariel kept his arms at a good bend, so he at least kept some distance with this polearm being between them. Though a wall was closer, moving in a circle like he just did would direct him away from it toward the open space of the room.

Then his left foot bumps into something as he hits the ninety degree mark. Tiem's dropped wooden sword. His left hand moves over to clasp down near the blade on his lance. His hand grip both sides of its end before twisting it his way, pushing slightly to the right. His left hand twists his way even more; moving his left hand left, the one foot blade slides off the lance, accompanied by a six inch handle.

The heel of his left foot smacks the wooden sword at its tip, causing it to come flinging up. Letting go of the lance, Yariel leaps back, his right hand crossing his body and grabbing the wooden sword amazingly by its handle before landing, with it in front, and his left hand hidden behind his back. But moving it forward, Yariel would show Tiem the blade that now was in his hands, leaving Tiem with only a simple polearm.
PostPosted: Fri Jun 29, 2007 3:44 pm

Simple polearm? No... simple stick would be more accurate. With the blade section detached, Tiem would be left holding a roughly 3' pole, which was a full foot longer than the one he had started with (edited for correctness).

Unfortunately, that would be as far as Yariel was getting.

The blade detached and then the polearm became Tiem's weapon entirely; with the fore end snapping upwards suddenly against the underside of Yariel's chin when the boy stepped into the elf's body and thrust out with his right while jerking back with his left. Even with Yariel's right hand still on the weapon it would do nothing to stop it; the wrist being a relatively flimsy joint compared to the rest of the body, it would hardly even serve to slow the strike down.

However, the initial strike was not a knockout blow intended to shatter the elf's glass jaw.

A sudden strike to the underside of the chin jars the senses for a moment. In that moment the movement would reverse and the two ends would switch places. With a step forwards to place his left foot behind Yariel's right and a turn of the body clockwise, Tiem snapped the shortstaff back and spun it around Yariel's side. If the elf had let go to grab the sword, then Tiem would step in under his arm; if he was still holding on then the step would be up against the elf, pressing against the arm. As for the staff, the aft end of the shaft would spin up behind the elf's right shoulder to crack against the back of his hooded cranium.

It was the second strike that was a knockout blow intended to cause a concussion.

Thirdly, the boy pushed off with his right foot; slamming his left shoulder against the side of Yariel's body while spinning the staff once more to the front. With his left leg having stepped around to behind the elf, a shove in that direction would send the opponent over the boy's shin and very likely crashing to the ground; especially after a fast and disorienting one-two combo. If not, then the fore end of the shortstaff was coming around again for a passionate kiss on the cheek. If so, the elf would find himself on the ground with the business end of a stick pointed towards him.

Yariel wouldn't try to block it. Instead, he turns his body so that his left side moves back and right goes forward, and steps back with both feet, the staff missing his face completely, while he brings the wooden sword forward, raising up vertically. The step forward would not be behind his right foot because Yariel had changed position with his right being to Tiem's left of that same left foot.

If the staff still did the revolving motion of coming for Yariel again, then it would strike into the blade part of the wooden sword, stopping it entirely, Yariel holding it firmly. If he wanted to try stepping in, he was going to have to turn to face him, which took time Tiem should know by now none of them would give to the other.

And so the shoulder charge would be met with Yariel stepping quickly to the right with his right arm raising to bring the staff upwards while the sword is turned to become more horizontal with the ground. So the shoulder charge would just have the half elf standing to the left of Tiem now, with the lance sliding off the curvature (I'm assuming the wooden sword has the same shape as a katana if you're going by the practice swords). The blade in his left hand would be kept held, bending his arm near his left abdominal, but nearly across his stomach for use later.

From this position, Yariel would keep his arm raised, but direct the sword so that the tip points downward, almost vertical. Reason for doing this was going to be shown depending on what Tiem does.

((Wait, where am I timestepping? I'm just reacting to the attack. I dodge and step to the side. There shouldn't be anything wrong with that.))

((The judge says it hits, so I'll let your precious chin strike hit for the sake of continuing this.))

Yariel would get hit in the chin, but an immediate strike into the chin wouldn't have him be stunned to not see the following actions, since after all the mask on his face took the attack. It wasn't made of glass, so it doesn't shatter. The material was durable, so a single staff strike wouldn't do much. So he does what he was still going to do even if he evaded it.

The staff still did the revolving motion of coming for Yariel again, but would strike into the blade part of the wooden sword, stopping it entirely, Yariel holding it firmly. If he wanted to try stepping in, he was going to have to turn to face him, which took time Tiem should know by now none of them would give to the other.

So the first end came back for Yariel's forehead and his magic mask.
