I also think that there is a huge difference between the music that is mainstreamed and the music that is not mainstreamed.
Rappers have mainstreamed their lyrics. Skeeting and crunking and whatever else they think is cool had made it to mainstream, and is played on the radio and TV daily, without censorship.
But if a rockstar is to sing "I got drunk and jizzed on her face" the whole sentence would be morphed out. Fair? I don't think so.
Rappers should be censored for saying the word skeet because of what it means, and I don't mean censored completely. I just mean censored on the basis of what is heard by public ears (ie radio, television, etc)

As an avid music lover I'd say yeah they should be allowed.
Every generation thinks their the greatest, they think they are the most disgusting and most horrible. But each generation outdoes the one that preceded it.
There is no point to banning music, it's called freedom of expression. I don't want to get handcuffed next time I go to a concert. I like rock mostly but some rap is alright. In htis country we have the right to say whatever we want as loud as we want, now some overly zealous politicians and parents may try to stop that, but the more they discourage it the more popular it will become.

but we all need to remember that the "man" is what rock is about without them trying to censor rock we would not have it as we know it today. If rock was just accepted it would lose it's meaning I mean it is all about sex drugs and rock n' roll without those rock is nothing but an empty shell of what it used to be. Motley Crue fine example "Girls Girls Girls", "primal scream" and "hell on high heels" what do we think these are about and they were supposed to be taken off air. When Dee Snider spoke to congress about his music and how it was supposed to be taken off air by the FDA Twisted Sister just grew in popularity.

marshjazz I still stand firmly to my "The roots don't matter. That is in the past" statement. It still exists but it's like a fly waiting to be killed with the fly swatter. (So basically you do not want change becuase if rap ever changed for the better, it would destory your beliefs right?)I agree with everything else you said. I don't listen to the "death metal" and "heavy metal" bands. I listen to Some Led Seppelin and Pink Floyd if it is on the radio, but I don't have it on my MP3 player. Those are kinda the "alright" bands to me.

No offense, I've found more knowledgable, less genralized, more well-rounded people younger than you. So, rap is not all about that, in fact a friend gave me some hip-hop and rap artists to view becuase I was losing faith in my favourite genre.

Music is a important part of growing up. But, yes, they have lost what they once were, I would prefer it if they stood for what they were intentionally supposed to stand for.
But, time changes everything, and today's youth just adore Hip Hop and Rock.
I personally prefer the older versions, both Hip Hop and Rock. But, I don't mind much of today's Hip Hop and Rock.
Rap does give some messages of meaning, not much, but they do have their moments. Some '50 Cent' and 'M&M"s songs.
As for Rock, the same. It has it's messages, but can get quite violent at times. They are responsible for what youth can look back to. Not a misfortune, but not a blessing either.

It is a fact that the rap that yoko was talking about it in the past and what is left of it is about to be gone. It isn't mainstream, so you don't hear it that much. It isn't my belief that it is in the past, it's fact.

Most new music is pretty sucky (lyrically, emotionally and melodically), especially all that indie BS ._.
I respect older rap/hip-hop/whatever musically, but it's not something I'd personally like nor go out of my way to listen to.

I must say this topic astounds me!!! I've grown up around Rock...I am a great great Ozzy fan!
Look: It doesn't depend on your age it depends on your maturity! your good sense of I'm not gonna go out and do that just cause my favorite music artist said to go ride out the rails on a crazy train.. and that hes the Iron man, and because he yells at his audience with great profanity..If parents really cared what society connected their children with they'd block it out!
thats my two cents right there that is!

Personally; im not much into Rap. But i cannot say that i hate it. I do occationally listen to it, but its mostly the radio stuff. Not the underground stuff.
BUT my preferred genre is without a doubt; Rock. And i dont believe rock has lost any value. Yea.. there is SOME crappy rock out there; but it hasnt changed. Its just progressed through the years. Like old rock; today rock still talks about sex and drugs; violence and love. Hasnt changed.
I dont believe things should be cencored... like ive read other people say. If someone doesnt want to hear something, change the channel or dont by the cd. Period.. end of story.
Now if i strayed off topic for a minute and told you about Country music.. id tell you straight up that i hate it now. I was born in Maine; but raised in Georgia my whole life and not ONCE has country sounded anything more than the sound that your phone makes when its dying.. that horrible screeching noise. I seriously think country is the worst made-up genre in the world and i dont believe it should even have the right to be called music. IT SUCKS. I hate the southern accent with a PASSION and yet i have to deal with it all everyday at work.
Rednecks really piss me off here in my city. D<
But thats basically all i have to debate about.

I say if we take them away we are taking away our fundamental right of free speech. Now there is some stuff out there I don't like, but I know how to hit the off button on the radio or change the station....

Honestly, I'm all for rock being a metalhead myself. It always has, and still does stand for teenage rebellion. That will never change. To me it encourages people to stand out amongst the crowd, and be your own person.
However, hiphop/rap seems to stand mostly for the "gangster society." From what I've observed in school, it promotes everyone dressing a certain way, and especially TALKING A CERTAIN WAY, it drives me nuts. I'm not into trying to be like everyone else.
I have mixed feelings about censoring. I don't think swearing should be censored, that is just part of mature music. However, rappers and hip hop artists seem to write alot of songs that promote intolerance towards women. Alot of songs I here people talking about are about beating women, and using them as sexual toys. This is wrong, and there should be some kind of law against this.

I hate the southern accent with a PASSION and yet i have to deal with it all everyday at work. There is no dening that country artists put just as much effort into their music as any other gene. One could argue more bacause many of them actually write their own songs, unlike many rap/rock artist who have their record companies write the songs for them. You have the write to your opinion, but "it doesn't have the right to be called music" is a little well, wrong. Music is a combination of beat and rythem, which country music has. We call rap music and it is basically someone talking fast to a deap beat in the background.
It's not just if someone doesn't want to hear it as an idivual. It is the influence it has over society/people/teenagers. Most parents don't want their 5 year old finding a radio and listening to rap music and then have to try and explain what sex is.
