"Your duty," she said with a shake of her head, "Is to keep yourself alive, first and foremost." All right, maybe seriousness would have to reign again. Sigh. The things she did for those she cared about, right? "I don't think I'd be a very happy camper if you came back to me dead, Draven. I like my friends whole and with their head connected to their bodies, not in the belly of some demon."

The female looked at him for a long moment, "You mean something to me, Draven, and not a lot do. Think of that before you put yourself in danger. Please."

"My head is attatched firmly to my neck and that is where it is going to remain." He nodded slowly. "My work here isn't finished, Fortune. I have a herd to look after again... Friends who need me here. If the crow were going to come claim me he would have done so by now."

He sighed softly, letting his eyes close as he tilted his head up towards the sky. "I did think, Fortune. I thought and, in my mind, the two mares were you and Nostalgia. I could no more let something happen to them as I could to you. We are all here for a reason, afterall."

For the first time outside of motherhood, Fortune seemed to become frustrated. "And your reason is not to be killed during a foolish stunt. A herd to look after you may have, Draven, but what is that herd if you're dead and gone? There is always time to be taken! Do you not understand that?!" her brows furrowed and she looked like she was going to cry.

Getting so worked up was not something that Fortune was accustomed to. She did not like serious conversations, she did not like having someone have emotional pull over her, she did not like any of this at all. Damnable stallions and their stubborn selflessness. Damn him to hell.

"Fortune." His brow furrowed as he looked back towards her, taking a deep breath before moving closer. He reached out, gently touching the tip of his nose to her cheek before letting his head drop. "Fortune... I lost my entire herd because I was not there to protect them. I couldn't keep them safe."

He sighed, closing his eyes. "Time is something that I am very aware of. Time was taken from me; from my herd. Time is taken from all of us and, while we cannot take it back, we can make the most out of that which we have left."

"It is not your job to keep everyone safe," she whispered, letting her eyes drop close as he felt his nose against her cheek, "You are not a super hero, my friend, you are not invincible. Please." The please was even less than a whisper, her voice dropping to barely registering at all. The female hadn't suffered loss more than her mother before - and that hadn't been a huge deal - but losing one of the few she considered a friend was not something the black mare was prepared to do.

Especially not to his own foolishness.

"Please, just...be careful, all right?" All this seriousness was getting to her and there were tears in her eyes. Damn, she hadn't cried...Oh, she couldn't remember. Probably since she was a foal and she'd thought the lake ate her feet. "Don't make me go through what you did with your herd." Maybe that would get to him.

He stiffened, letting her words sink in before stepping closer to her once more so that he could rest his head reassuringly against his friend's neck. "I have never claimed to be invincible. No one is invincible... Not even those who are cursed." He spoke softly as if he were talking to one of Nostalgia's foals after they'd been frightened by a nasty storm.

"I will be careful." He nodded slowly, knowing that he would be. Crow couldn't take him yet... Not when he still had unfinished business.

The comfort of his head against her neck did a bit to calm her nerves and she let out a long, slow sigh. "You better, Draven, or I will have to find a way to bring you back and kick your rear end myself, do you understand?" The seriousness had gone on for too long and she was beginning to get a little antsy. Still, the tears were unshed in her eyes and she opened them to turn her head into him, "It would give me great pleasure to do so."

He pulled back, eyes opening for a moment so that he could look at the mare. His brow lofted slightly and he found himself laughing. "Completely understood, Fortune. Imps, aferall, are far more threatening than anything else... Especially when you are friends with them."

"Be afraid," she toned, "be very, very afraid." It was getting dark, though, and she was most definitely going to heed her friend's warning, "It's getting late, friend. Perhaps it's time for me to find a safe place for the evening. If I'm demanding you take care of yourself I may as well placate your fears of me and do the same for you."

It was the least she could do, after all.

He looked up to the sky before glancing back down to her with a slow nod. "You're right. Time for you to find a safe place... And for me to return to Nostalgia and her foals before she begins to worry again. I promised her I would be back before night covered the land."

"Be safe, Draven," she said again, leaning up to press an affectionate nuzzle against his neck, "I don't want to receive word that you were caught up again. Good night."

The mare took a step back, looked at him for a long moment, and turned to find her place for the evening. It would take some time but she found the safety of a tree grove and nestled down against one and into some moss. She'd be safe there, she was certain. It wasn't long before Fortune slipped off into sleep.
