Spoilers for 'The Boiling Rock'! Highlight to read:

I never thought I would say this, but I actually liked Mai in this. Like, a lot. Not only was she completely kick-a** (is it just me, or was everyone a total ninja in this episode?), but she actually expressed herself! That's what I've been waiting for. Some emotion, not just the same old bored and reactionless attitude. If she stays like this for whatever other appearances she makes this season (which is probably few, since she's in prison now), I could seriously start liking her.

I agree, she did grow on me. And when Zuko locked her in the cell, she actually looked on the verge of tears, but because of her backround she held them back and didn't cry in the slightlest way. And how broken up do you think the maikoan's were after Zuko stopped?

Zuko: *looks back to the prison*

Maiko fangirl: Zutara doesn't stand a chance now! That's right Zuko, go back for Mai! ^_^

Zutarian: *sighs as she looks at her fingernails* D:

Zuko: My sister is here,

Sokka: Zuko, come on we have to get out of here! Who cares why your sister is here?

Zuko: No, if my sister is here she must've arrived here somehow! *runs away from the prison*

Maikoan: *on the floor with a broken spirit*

Zutarian: Doesn't stand a chance huh? X3

Highlight:

Hehe. xD Seems like a pretty accurate rendition. Though, there are some Maikoans that believe this episode strengthened the pairing. :/

-_- Something that the Avatar base is known to create. Delusion. :/ But they can think whatever they like. You notice how in the episode; The Awakening, when Mai kissed Zuko, he didn't react in anyway or form, at all?

Highlight:

Yeah, I noticed that too. He's more emotionless than her in that shot. Dx

I didn't think it would last much longer after 'The Beach' aired, though. I mean, they clearly expressed what they dislike in partner (for Mai, it's an explosive temper; for Zuko, it's lack of emotion), which was the other's main trait. Seriously. How would that work out? Unless Zuko miraculously lost his naturally short temper and Mai learned to break free from a lifetime of habitual restraint, it wouldn't be a very healthy relationship.

Wow, those screencaps took me back a little...I actually kind of died a little inside when I first saw that...lol

But I'm not worried anymore. I mean, I've always loved Mai as her own character, and even more in combo with Ty Lee, so obviously, this episode was Freaking awesome beyond all reason for me. Break up of Maiko, and the coming together of Mai and Ty Lee. I love it.

But Mai, man, she just kicks a**. I mean, case closed. And Maiko is dead. I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks that there's going to be time or even relevence for Zuko to run back and get her in the finale...Um, yeah, sorry, it's not going to happen. There's way too much to wrap up as it is. If they do come back, and I hope they do, it'll probably be a foot note or something, like them coming -together- out of the prison. It won't be Maiko, but it will be about MAI. and TY LEE. And MAILEE!!!

But Maiko? Nope. it ended on Zuko's end when he slammed the door and locked her in the room, and on Mai's end, it ended with that glance over the shoulder. Zuko's got his destiny and his job to do, and Mai doesn't understand it, but she's letting him go because she knows he has to do it, and he won't stop until he does.

I agreed on every aspect.

Spoilers for the finale come with the post, I'll give a red line too so be careful. If it's not allowed, please tell me and I'll edit. sweatdrop

Exactly, it comes right back to; Why do you call us delusional? Maiko had confirmation from the characters themselves that is was over, done with; DEAD [Double Face-palm] And you still want to hold tight? [Huff Filled Sigh]

Spoilers FOR THE FINALE start here

Mike and Bryan called Zutara, “dark.” “Dark”, [O_o;] did you just....? You call Zutara “dark,” when Maiko has the two angst teens from hell [no offense, as I love Zuko, but you know with Mai he was fairly depressive. >_>] as the center core of their realtionship? And even come The temporary “end game” fixiation we're in right now. People, mostly the Kataangers and Maikoans are butt-hurt over it all.

Awww, what's wrong? I thought you'd be happy Kaatang and Maiko was made Canon! Is it because they called your pairings predictable and the classic style ending of the hero gets the girl? Sucks for you then. I'll take “dark” over “classically predictable,” any day of the week.

I'd rather Mai and Ty Lee have the hots for each other, since the two of them have more chemistry together then Mai and Zuko. Think about it, they're natural opposites. And we know what opposites do. XD

Spoilers FOR THE FINALE end here.

She is okay. I was surprised to find out she was the warden's niece. I'm still wondering why she was friends with Azula.

Through writing fanfic, I've discovered I don't totally hate Mai. She's an interesting character who just got the short end of the stick in terms of development. Also, I think I could've actually liked Maiko the smallest amount if it had been handled properly.

But the problem is, Mai's development ended up being completely centered around Zuko, which made her come off as shallow, cold-hearted, and selfish. Especially since none of the problems they faced - as a couple and as individuals - never got properly resolved. Well, okay, Zuko got a lot of his issues resolved, but that was because he was his own person. Mai, on the other hand, never got passed her childhood upbringing of 'suppress all opinions and emotions', never really learned that the war was a bad thing and she'd been fed propaganda all her life (or develop any independent opinion on it, really. She just followed along with Zuko), and just never... grew as a person.

The only thing that changed was her loyalty to Azula, and that wasn't really for the reasons you might expect. It wasn't because Azula treated her like crap and was psycho and all that - it was for Zuko. And, yes, saving a persons like is a noble deed. But when that noble deed is the single character building moment for her in the entire series, it kinda falls flat once you realize she still doesn't care about anything unless it personally affects her.

But if that stuff had been done differently? If Mai had been given a chance to shine and wasn't turned into Zuko's Designated Love Interest? Yeah, I would've liked her.

That is actually a very true statement. Mai really hasn't done anything for herself, and because of her upbringing and personality flaws. She won't truly develope as a person when you think in realistic terms. She was raised to be a follower, she follows whoever has the most power and even though she may (note the 'may' because I honestly don't think what she feels is love) love Zuko she lacks the drive to do for herself. She does for him and Azula because they have the power.

I honestly like Mai's character type (the kick as ninja assassin type), but it's her personality that turns me off because she lacks the drive to overcome her personal obsticals that stand in her way of becoming her own individual.

I know this is dead, but I just realized something about myself and the reason I don't like Mai...at all. It actually has to do with Tom-Tom. How could she, as a sister, basically abandon her brother?

In that situation, all older sisters and myself included (that I know) would go to hell and back for our little brothers. You could have a gun to my head and threaten to pull the trigger and I wouldn't care. I would do anything for my little brother and it disgusted me that Mai would so easily dismiss hers.

He's her blood. He's her baby brother, and she didn't give two cents about him. It's not the shipping or anything of the like that keeps me from even remotely liking Mai, it's her. When she turned her back on Tom-Tom when Azula asked her, I lost all respect for her. I like her character type and think she's bad-a**, but the minute she betrayed Tom-Tom, without any sign of remourse, I hated her.

that was definitely my first pang of serious dislike for mai. i could understand being bored in a restrictive noble lifestyle, and relying on ninja knife throwing for excitement, but who the hell is just like "hi strangers who are my enemies, yeah, you can go ahead and keep my helpless baby brother, IDGAF." even before that, her parents are HEARTBROKEN that tom-tom is missing and she's just like *annoyed look* "want some snacks?" *nomnom* what a horrible daughter.

I know exactly what you mean. Superficially, it's funny. But when you truly think about it, that's seriously F***ED UP! Sure there are times when people claim that they hate their siblings, but in truth they love them and would do anything for their sake (unless they're mai). The fact that she would turn on her own brother makes it near impossible for me to like her, and if she were real I wouldn't be able to trust her.

I don't know how anybody could trust her so easily. I'd be worried she'd stab me in the back at the slightest provocation. I don't even see the apeal in her. Sure she's pretty, but beyond that she has no appeal.

She can't think for herself.

She's emotionless.

And she'll probably be a terrible mother if her personality is anything to go by.

Everytime I think of her I hate her more and more, and that's before I think of Maiko. evil
