I'm not really sure about this one, to be quite honest with you. I've watched it three times now (once at a friend's, once to check the video at mie taped it properly and once about an hour ago on BBC Three), and I really don't know what to say about it. There's obviously some skills that the Doctor seems to have retained from his previous incarnations (bowling a cricket ball well from the Fifth Doctor, for example), I really wasn't sure. I'll see what happens next week though, and give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Favourite quote:

Martha:
There's something hidden, behind his eyes, you can see it.

"This is what we call a 'stooooooorrrrryyyyy'...."

Raise your hand if you felt an uncontrollable urge to smack the Doctor when he said that to Martha. xd

Yeah, but the thing is, 1913 was not exactly the most politically correct era in history. The British Empire had shrunk and there was still loads of prejudice. Jenny mentions about the suffragettes, and not meaning to sound rude, but Martha would have had it twice as bad because she is a black female. The Doctor (well, John Smith) was just reacting in the same way that most people of that era would have reacted to Martha saying the sort of stuff she had just said.

Mind you, I felt like slapping him! And that one who was rude to Martha when she was scrubbing the floor.

I loved it! (Again)

And yet again. Everyone has said everything I wanted to say about it.

Can't wait until next week!

I have to say, I found this episode absolutely fantastic. It's not like a lot of the traditional stories, but I think it's good that they're trying to do new things and keep it varied and interesting.

And for the record, the mushy bits here weren't nearly as bad as some of the ones with Rose. And let's face it, he's always getting attached to people when he's normal, so what in heaven's name makes you think he'd be any less likely to when he doesn't (as far as he's concerned) have a good reason not to.

The scarecrows were brilliantly creepy, I thought. And as far as for the people moaning that scarecrows are rubbish and can't do anything, consider this. The zombie is a recognised staple of horror, and yet they are little more than mindless, shambling meat-bags. The scarecrows, whilst appearing slow and shambling, also display a predatory cunning and possess the perfect disguise in such a setting to be able to surround and spring out on a person before they've even realised.

One final thought - am I the only person who when the Doctor said that they were going to be pursued across the galaxy thought 'Hmm, I haven't seen him in a pickle like this since he and Romana crossed the Black Guardian'?

apparently the concept of this story is based on a previous Doctor Who novel called Human Nature, and it was re-written for the television screen.

Once again i disagree with everything Takuha has said.

Funny tha'.

Anyway, episode rawked, and then on confidential, they were playing s**t music, but then they played knights of cydonia, so s'all good.

I hate Muse, I'm going to assume that they're one of your favourite bands. I'm also going to assume that you hate MCR, like most muse fans that I know. Oh and after watching the episode again I've decided that the episode started well and then fell apart in the 28th minute (yes I am sad enough to time it) and I've got number 9 for my list: How come after the doctor-an intruder as it were in this time period-saved the woman and her babie's life from being flattened by the piano, why didn't a load of reaper monsters appear and eat everyone in sight like we saw in fathers day back in 2005?

But heres some good news, I now regret giving this episode a 2 and have decided a 3 would be better for this episode, so pretend that 2 on the poll dosn't exist.

Yup, Muse are my favourite band, yup, i hate MCR. Funny tha'

And the reason the reapers didn't appear and eat him was because he was SUPPOSED to be there saving her... the asme reason the reapers don't appear and eat stuff in every single other episode of doctor who ever. Except father's day, in which that did happen.

Tardis fit him into the time line, meant to happen, candybars, ect.

The Reapers didn't show up simply because Rose saved her father, but because the Doctor went back to the same point in time twice, and Rose, instead of waiting for the earlier versions of the Doctor and Rose to leave before going to her dad (like the Doctor explicitly told her to do), rushed into the street to save her father... in the process allowing the earlier Doctor and Rose to see the later Rose. This caused an instability in the space-time continuum (as indicated by the earlier Doctor and Rose suddenly disappearing from existence), and THAT caused the Reapers to show up. A similar space-time anomaly occured later when Rose touched baby Rose, allowing the Reapers to breach the protective barrier of the church.

Incidentally, the idea that meeting a time-shifted version of yourself is a really bad thing for the universe actually goes at least as far back as the 5th Doctor story 'Mawdryn Undead'. Though apparently this doesn't apply to the Doctor meeting up with earlier incarnations of himself.

I reserve full judgement on this episode until I've seen the second part, as two-parter's can't really be judged on one half alone. However, I enjoyed it and thought it was very unusual and well done. To me it had a strange 7th Doctor feel, though the story itself was all its own. It was perhaps the setting and tone and so on that made me think of McCoy. I could imagine Ace playing Martha's part, though slightly differently.

Actually my only major let down in this episode was Martha, she was really annoying. It's a pity. When she took over from Rose I was all prepared to be her biggest fan, I thought she'd make a great companion, but she's got worse and worse. Her obsession over the Doctor's feelings in this episode was pitiful. Really, really sad. And not in a good way. It also seemed very out of character. She's so needy! Yuck.

Oh and why can't people, when talking about the Doctor, not just say 'Haven't you noticed he's a bit weird?' rather than 'When you look into his eyes you see a mysterious god of the universe followed by darkness and power and death etc etc...'. It was the only bad bit in the script, the bit with Martha talking to Matron like that. So tacky. The rest was spot on.

heart Baines. Weirdo. Great.

Yeah, but that's kind of the point of zombies. They're humans robbed of all vestiges of humanity to leave only a hollow, mindless shell whose only goal in life is to chow down on brainmeats. The problem with the scarecrows is they're supposed to be efficient hunters for the family. And something with half a barn's worth of straw running through its veins and the proverbial pole stuffed up its arse just ain't that. Sorry o.o
