ladybeth27 Petticoat_Lane Hey my friend told me that they found this fuel in the ocean and its not a fossil fuel or anything but it hasn't been obtained. I'm not sure it's real because she makes things up a lot but.... it would be cool if they did. You came to the guild. biggrin Yay, welcome. Maybe your friend knows a link where we could find out more about the stuff from the ocean. It could be true. Yes! I found out how as soon as I asked you... so I did. Anyways, I'll ask her.

About the veggy oil for fuel, I think it would start coming more into practice within a decade or two. Since gas has been rising in cost, less people can really afford to drive into work from their urban home.
And because of all the trans-fats (sp?) in veggy oil, cooking with it is becoming out of style, so I think now would be the perfect time for some of the major fuel industries to grab hold of this veggy oil fuel idea.

Problem with the veggi-diesel bio fuel, NOx emissions would increase about 15%. Dallas is currently in big troulbe with the EPA not over water or Co2 but over ozone which is created when sunlight hits NOx, this type of vehicle would aggravate an already bad problem. I actually prefer high fuel prices though, as long as I dont drive that is. >>I ride my bike to work everyday because my "baby" was getting 11 mpg city< >the reason why Japanese and European cars are smaller and more fuel efficient is because it is normal for gas prices to be between $3.50 and $4 a gallon<< As far as reducing electric usage, try getting a long shift day job that way you wont be at home during the hot hours of the day >>particulary effective in my state of Texas<, and then by a time controlled thermostat and set it to only cool the house when your home. Also greyhound is a great way to save fuel. When I went down to Corpus Christi this summer, I booked with Greyhound, it cost me less than half as much as it wouldve cost me in gas to drive it, and it used less than 20% of the fuel that it wouldve taken for me to drive it alone. Using electricity during non-peak hours cuts down on the number of booster electric plants utilities must build for their peak hours so kerep that in mind. If you wish to go really green, try a utility like green moutain energy. With Green Moutain energy you will feel better knowing that your electricity is generated through cleaner-than-conventional source or with the wind only option you will know that the electricty you use know will be around for generations to come and contributes almost nothing to air pollution potentially cutting your share of the CO2 burden by 17,000 pounds the equivalent of nearly 20,000 miles driving an "average" car >>pulled from Green Mountain Energy FAQ. I am for consumer driven change and education, so educate your neighbors as well about Green Moutain energy especially if you live in Texas, where Green Mountain often wins out over TXU's sky high prices. If your community has a recycling program >>mine does<< look into joining it, but make sure what requirements the have on recycled materials, they may want you to remove labels or only accept certain plastics, on the bottom or near the bottom of every container is a number giving you an identification of the glass or plastic type.

Wow, Fluffy! You know your stuff. I like your idea about buying green energy.
Here's something else that's kind of an interesting idea. Some of the energy technology related stocks are very inexpensive. One that I invest in is only 18 cents a share now, so you can buy 5 shares for a dollar (plus a brokerage fee). At those prices even a kid can afford to invest, if your parents will help you. So, there are wind energy companies, fuel cell companies, solar energy companies etc. You're investment helps the company grow, and your investment will probably grow over time. It might be something to consider with money gifts you get.

Wind farms aren't all that bad!! xp They aren't even the least bit bad. All they do is spin around with the wind, and if the wind doesn't blow, then a backup power source would be used until the wind began to blow again.

There are some negative features of windfarms...like migrating birds that might hit the big blade things is one of the main reasons some ppl don't like them. But seriously, a bird isn't that stupid.

The people ion Massachuesetts also think they would spoil the natural beauty of the seascape. If you read I think it was last months issue of National Geographic they explore energy sources and one of the most contreverstial is wind power. German enviromental groupos hate them, greenpeace hates them, rich people in massachuestts hate them >>my spelling is bad tonight<< personally I wouldn;t mind a wind farm as my neighbor >>my neighbor is currently an empty field but I;d prefer to see wind turbines as opposed to any other sort of power generation facility<< The only type of power universally accepted by enviromental groups is solar power, problem with that is that solar power is not very economically feasible, if you were to try to power manhattan with solar, you would first need to stake out sunny land greaterin size than that than of the manhattan metro area and then your costs would be sky high especially if you tried to store your excess energy so you would have something to run off of at nights. Solar is not a good answer for the nations energy needs, perhaps one day it will be but it isn't now, currently our best hope lies within geo, hydro, and wind power.

one way to help the environment is to be frugal (spend less, and use everything to its ultimate potential). Go to the thrift store sometimes, and recycle clothes. Don't buy in excess, and use a little less toilet paper people! Don't spend so much money on gas, and invest in a bike or public transportation instead. Don't use paper plates, and use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins. Don't use so much toothpaste! Being "cheap" can save you loads of money, and eases up on the earth's natural recourses.
And now I would like to add a truly inspiring true story: My English teacher does not own a car. He travels via skateboard and bus. He skateboards from school to the bus stop with his breif case, then takes his skateboard onto the bus. It is portable and it works! He has been using this kind of transportation for about 15 years. He is 60 years old! I am so proud of him!!! And he is always so pleased with life! He's always smiling xd
