(( Sounds good. I've never done it before here on Gaia so bear with me. ))
Lusiphur was positive that wasn't an underhanded serve...well perhaps at another time! But until then he did make the effor to move and hit the ball back, while falling just short of hitting it - he did scramble two of his back legs to snag the ball once it had hit ground and pull it close so that it didn't go rolling away.
There were things he did not mind chasing after...balls was not one of them.
It wasn't a defeat yet, he reminded himself gently as he reared up a bit onto his back two sets of legs, slightly unsteady but steady enough not to be an issue, picking up the ball with what were now his first set of legs - tossing the ball up with those before pushing it with what were now his arms to go sailing over the net! This might have been easier, granted, if he had fingers...

"One point for me, but it's still early in the game. Let's see what you can do with this!" The ball had flown gracefully over the net and into the eagle's sights. He almost behaved like the ground was hot, up on his toes and bouncing just a bit as his eyes and feet followed the ball and his fists gathered together as one as it made it's descent. A hit! The knot of his hands struck the ball from underneath, preventing it from hitting the ground and propelling it back at Luse, gentler comming this time but still with a good amount of force for an underhanded return. "Come on, you can do it!"

Lusiphur nodded briefly, if only to be polite; he wans't really accustomed to using his physical attributes like this, indeed he was more accustomed to his little spider-dances, but he was determined to learn; admittedly Carl's encouragement was slightly distracting.
However this time when the ball came sailing back to him he was there, moving much faster on his delicate legs, ready to meet it and send it back to Carl with a little less force than the bird had used - he was also determined to get better at this - but at least it hadn't hit the net, which Carl had already said was a no-no! "Ha!" Luse allowed himself one moment of victory. True, he hadn't won the game by a long shot, but he was gaining experience.
(( I'm just going to keep track of points in brackets for my sake...it might come in handy. 1 to 0 ))

Up, up, up...Carl backed up a great deal, not so far as to leave the court, but the way the ball was heading was working against his usual hand-eye coordination. The descent came as swiftly as had the ball ascended, catching the bird by surprise as he made to dive for it, only to wind up tasting floor whilst the sound of the ball's substance meeting the floor behind him resonated through his senses. Ouch...miss. carl pushed himself and rolled his shoulders a bit, shaking the landing off before moving to get the ball.
The thing was easily enough retrieved and Carl held it up again. "Good shot..Now on with the game, neh?" And with no more he tossed it up and drove his palm into it, sending Luse's way with an extra kick, albeit would probably dissipitate as soon as Luse hit it.

Lusiphur nodded in agreement. On with the game indeed! Though a slight victory Luse felt it was only icing on the cake he'd made in actually deflecting the last ball that was thrown at him! Nontheless he did what his mother had always taught him; stay loose, stay comfortable. Don't tense up. It seemed to be working...
Especially since the ball barely stood a chance! It seemed to come sailing right at him, and Lusiphur was ready to serve it back to Carl under-handed style - his first time! He knocked it back successfully, with just as much driving force as Carl had put in it - still, it was almost impossible for him to be too rough, considering he didn't really have that kind of strength.

(( Oh, bad luck for Carl xd ))
This time he didn't go back far enough. Luse returned it neatly, the ball sailing over without so much as a hitch with the net or form, only to come at such a gentle arch that Carl swung to early and caused ot to bounce not forward but instead to the side where it glided too far out of his range to save it, but instead into the ground.
Such a bad show! But he couldn't deny that the game WAS interesting with such a dissadvantage, for would it not be too plain if it were equal or one sided? The bird picked up the ball and rubbed the back of his head, chuckling softly before tossing the ball up as he'd done before only this time to hit it at a different tempo, trying out a mid-strength blow to see how it fared.

Lusiphur took a deep breath and prepared himself...he understood the rush of sports a bit better now but he was trying hard to keep his overconfidence under wraps. After all, overconfidence bred carelessness and carelessness was the absolute last thing that Lusiphur wanted to show to Carl, or anyone else for that matter...
That didn't keep him from missing, however, and the ball fell just short of his attempt to hit it back over the net; he insisted to himself that his pride wasn't wounded - after all, the game was hardly over! Instead he gave Carl a little bit of a lop sided smirk and nodded a bit.
"Good one..."
And he served it back!

Good Luck indeed! Carl nodded his thanks to him, but kept both eyes focused this time, allowing his mind to go quiet whilst his body moved as though with will all it's own towards the sphere. Before it came too far down, Carl braced himself - pushing himself up into a short jump towards it rather than waiting. The move paid off in the fact that he was able to turn it into an overhandshot aimed directly for the ground, rather than just leaving it to chance.
Now whether or not it connected was an entirely different story.

Indeed it was a different story...Lusiphur was again 'waiting in the wings' as it were for the ball...determined as ever, but not allowing that determination to make him worry.
Unfortunately it seemed a streak of bad luck was setting in for him. Again, he wasn't too far off from the ball when it landed but he wasn't there to hit it back either! He wondered if it was from lack of skill or if perhaps his depth perception had something to do with it...he did have five eyes after all!
With a nod he picked up the ball once more and served it back over the net to Carl - a nice steady hit! Too hard and it might go out of bounds...

It sailed over beautifully, nice and smooth to Carl's waiting claws. It was another underhand server, punting it up over and high to sail right over the very top of the netting. Sofar it had been a hit or miss with Lady Fortune, but it seemed she'd grown sweet on him for the time being - so Carl was going to take full advantage of her favor before the tides turned again.

The expression on Lusiphur's face almost mirrored a pained one...he really biffed that hit-back! He hadn't been anywhere near the ball at the time! But that didn't stop him from walking over on his hypnotically delicate legs and scooping the ball up for another toss...

Only for the bird to whack it back! Carl palmed it back over the net easily, a confident smile playing upon his visage. Not that there was any guarantee this would last long - but why not enjoy it while it remained?

Well it was certainly lasting for Carl...his score was only rising while Luse's stayed the same. Strangely the more they played, the less emotion Lusiphur started to show. After all; his future wasn't riding on this game. There was more to his pride than a ball sailing over a net...this was just for fun, with others!
He collected the ball again to send it sailing back...
