dotHACKpunk So, apperantly, I can play pretty damn fast. I just picked up the guitar a few months ago, and I can play a few songs, but nothing fantastic, just your very basic rythyms, Stairway To Heaven, Jessica, Heartbreakers, but I can picks faster then anyone I know personally. I know two guys who have been playing for about 3 years, and dont use picks, just fingers, and they have fantastic finger methods. So, is it good that I can play fast and OK with my fingers, or my friends can play great with their fingers and bad with picks? ur lucky... i suggest trying to play thunderstruck (the intro) by AC/DC i think its fatser than 2/2 but im not sure... still try it with the pick...

In my opinion, anyone that can learn picking pretty early and is able to go really fast is gifted. I suck at picking because I have ******** up fingers. My thumb and pointer locks up and the rest of my fingers are really really lose so they fly all over the place and hit the knobs so then I get these huge scrapes on my fingers. I'm waaaay better at finger picking because I'm so used to moving my fingers almost all the time.

I actually prefer to play with my fingers rather than with a pick, because not only do I end up loosing all of them (I don't even have any with me now), I find it a bother to hold a pick and strum with it and hence, I prefer to use my fingers.
I'm still trying to master fingerpicking, but I definately prefer fingerpicking to strumming. Sounds nicer.
If you are talented in guitar (as in, able to learn things fast, and play it really well too), good for you! Continue to work hard, and one day, you'll be a master at it!
For some of us who may be feeling a little discouranged, take heart. We all have different talents, so don't be upset if your's isn't necessarily guitar.

I am a "slow" player and prefer playing with a extremely heavy pick. I like playing slow because when there are fewer notes, each not means more. Like in the old "Riders in the Sky" song.

dotHACKpunk sometimes I can play in rythym, sometimes I cant im still gettin rythym while playin fast down its kinda hard No offense or rudeness intended because Lord knows I'm no master, but if you can't keep your rhythm or stay in time all the time while playing fast, then you can't play fast. You may be able to move your pick up and down fast and maybe you can even change chords fast, but you can't play fast. "Playing a song" is so much more than simply knowing the right chords and hitting them. There are so many nuances to playing a song right like the rhythm, the angle you strike the strings, the amount of the flesh on your finger you allow to touch the string when you hit it with your pick. All these things get missed when you focus on speed. I can guarantee you that if you slow down and focus on these type of things you will become a much better player in the long run than if you keep trying to burn through tunes. Here is what I recommend to my new students: take a metronome and a song you want to play. Play the song slower and slower until you find a slow tempo you can play the song PERFECTLY at. perfect time, rhythm, and expression of the notes. Set the metronome at that tempo. Then after you play it there a little bit, speed the metronome up a little and play there until you play it perfectly at that new tempo. Keep inching up until you can play the song perfectly at the written speed, or the speed you want to play it at. You can do it bro, it just takes time and the determination to want to be a serious guitarist.
