"Yes, I suppose it might be a matter of reflex." Irisa remarked thoughtfully as she flew back over to Hadrian. "That was how I casted my first spell. Something... er, sorta attacked me and I just instinctively casted stoneskin to protect myself. Although a possible difference there might be that I deep down already had that spell, while in this particular case, it's more an attempt to learn new spells."

The feien glanced around. The room was getting really warm. But alas, Irisa highly doubted that sweating and the spell of exuding cold were the same thing. And the feien still wasn't feeling any effect, although she definately found herself wishing for a colder atmosphere at the moment.

"Whew. Well... I'm pretty sure every part of me including my mind wants a dip in a cold pool or a refrigerator right around now." Irisa remarked as she fanned herself with her hand, before looking at Hadrian. "Tell me, does this feel any colder to you?"

With that, she put her hand on his shoulder to see how it would feel.

The room felt perfectly comfortable to Hadrian, in fact he was actually feeling quite a bit more at ease then before.
His skin felt warm to the touch, warmer then you would expect a person to feel - and doubly so for Irisa and her cold element.

Her hand felt cool on Hadrian's shoulder. Cooler then the temperature of the room certainly...but not especially cold.
Her putting a hand on his shoulder gave him a very odd feeling in his stomache though. He had no idea why, but it was a little disconcerting...if not entirely unpleasant. He momentarily had trouble coming up with something to say.
"...ah...yes...I mean...no. I mean, its colder then the room, but not so much so..." He stopped, frowning a little at his sudden inability to articulate what he meant.

Hmm, Irisa hoped that she didn't accidentally shock Hadrian like how the sudden lighting of the match shocked her a while back. Although.. it seemed like this was a different type of shock. Actually, Irisa herself felt slightly awkward too so she decided to calmly take her hand off of Hadrian's shoulder.

"Sorry about that," the feien commented, a bit embarassed. "I guess even in a warm room, I'm still slightly naturally colder than room temperature. I... don't seem to have gotten the spell down, though."

With that, the feien looked at her own hands, a slight amount of frustration on her face.

"Sigh. I really hope that I can learn how to artifice better than I can learn how to cast spells." she remarked with a rather worried tone in her voice. "It'd get rid of a significant amount of the point for me to make that trip all the way to Rome, otherwise."

Hadrian's eyes widened, embarasment forgotten, "You're going to Rome?!"
Rome, to Hadrian, was a very far away magical and mysterious place that you read about in books or heard of in vague references. He knew what it was, but he had never thought of anyone actually GOING there.
And he had no idea what an artificier was, or how you got to be one...
"Why are you going there? Its so far away...and ..." he looked for a word to describe it... "Big!"
"Anyway, you're really good at learning at learning how to use spells." He nodded seriously, "Just because you haven't learned any yet. You're WAY better then me at figuring things out and learning about magic. I'm sure you'll figure it out."
And he sounded sure too. Not just like he was humoring her - he was being perfectly upfront about things, he really was quite impressed with Irisa's apparent knowledge of magical things.

Irisa warmly smiled at Hadrian's compliment.

"Thank you, Hadrian. I appreciate it." she nodded. "I suppose you're right. Er, about how I'll figure it out, that is. I wouldn't exactly say I'm better than you, because you have the drive and the spirit, which is something my fairy godmother always said was the most important of all."

The feien flew back over to the dial and turned off the heating. It didn't seem to be getting anywhere and Irisa didn't want to get to a point where she'd melt, anyways. Ah well. She was sure that Hadrian really was right, and they'd figure it all out someday.

"Not that it matters who's better that way, anyways." Irisa cheerfully remarked as she flew back over to Hadrian. "Because we'll figure it out together, someday. We should probably take a break for now, though. Being in this heat is starting to wear me out a bit."

That settled, Irisa decided to explain her trip.

"As for the trip to Rome... well, I've just recently received a quest from Julius." she explained. "I'm going to try to recover the secrets of the Feien artifice school of magic! It... requires a lot of research and discovery to be done in Rome, and it might be kind of dangerous, but the contribution to the Feien of recovering such a thing would be immense."

Irisa paused to think for a bit, before speaking again.,

"Admittingly, he also said I would make a very good artificer, myself." the feien guiltily added.

Hadrian had been feeling comfortable with the room temperature, but he didn't really notice the room cooling off - he was feeling pretty warm from the return compliment from Irisa.

"I'm sure you'd be a great artificer!" He said firmly...then paused, "Er...whatever that is..."

He turned the rest of her story over in his head, frowning. She said it would be dangerous. He found himself not really wanting her to go...
He blurted it out without really thinking,
"But, if its dangerous...you could get hurt!"

"Yes, I know. I've never been so far from the safety of my home or the shop before." Irisa replied, before looking determined. "But... I have to do this. This is my chance to really accomplish something. To do so much for the feien, and also, to follow my own calling."

She looked at Hadrian with a sympathetic look on her face. It was true, though. She had to do this and looked forward to what could be if she succeeded, but she was still worried and furthermore, being away from all of her friends and family for so long was going to be... well, rather lonely. Still, there was at least one other person coming with her.

"My father is coming along." she added. "So... I won't be completely alone. I'll... miss everyone else, though, and it'll still be rather dangerous, I imagine."

Slowly, an equally determined look crept over Hadrian's face.
"Then..." He crossed his arms, "I'm going too. If its dangerous...you..."
He stopped and lost a bit of the determination - finding it replaced with an odd hestitant feeling...suddenly concerned she would want him around...
"You'll need someone to protect you..."

If Irisa had to do it, well then she had to do it. But by golly he wasn't going to let her just go and do something dangerous without...well without HIM along.

Irisa gazed at Hadrian, confused. He was willing to go all the way to Rome just for her? Even when she said it'd probably be dangerous?

The young feien smiled. It was nice to have a friend who cared about her like that.

"Why, thank you Hadrian. Your company would be most appreciated." Irisa gratefully replied, before adding, "Although... would it be okay with your bond? Rome is far away, and... I also have to admit that I'd be a bit worried for you, too. I wouldn't want you to be hurt, either."

Not that Irisa knew if her father would actually appreciate Hadrian's company too, but she imagined that he wouldn't mind if Irisa brought some friends along. Irisa considered herself rather intelligent, and her father seemed smart as well as experienced, but... one couldn't be so sure when dealing with a foreign land and such unknown secrets.

And she'd enjoy Hadrian's company, anyways.

Hadrian beamed at her, "Don't worry, I'll keep you safe!" He paused..."Oh...well...I'm sure it WILL be ok with mom..." He shuffled a bit, annoyed that he hadn't thought to consider this angle.
"She's busy with the 'twins' anyway. She'll probably be glad to have me out from under foot..."
Ok that was a lie...she'd probably worry to death the entire time he was gone. But he wasn't going to let that stop him. Irisa would need someone to protect her! Never mind that her father was going and would probably be better at it then Hadrian would be...

How odd. Irisa never really experienced either the concept of wanting to get out on your own to be independent from others or the concept of wanting someone to get out on their own to be away from you, but then again, she always did tend to keep to herself in the house as much as she could, and her fairy godmother really wasn't THAT overbearing. She imagined the circumstance was quite different in other homes.

"Well, if it's okay with your bond, then." Irisa remarked, deciding not to dwell on a household or bond that she had never met. Hadrian would know better than she would about that, after all.

The feien nodded. "I'll contact you when it's time to leave, then! I don't have the exact date due to the suddenness of the trip, but I believe that the scheduled flight should be in only a few more days, actually."

He nodded enthusiastically. "Ok!"
Rome...this was going to be really exciting. An adventure like the ones they wrote about in books.
"Do you know what Rome is like?"
He leaned forward slightly, excited about the prospect of a trip, and forgetting about the danger aspect in his enthusiasm.

"I've... read about it in books and researched all I could on the internet, but I haven't ever been there before, myself." Irisa remarked in thought. "It actually seems like a very nice place, really."

Indeed, whatever dangers were on the trip were hard to remember in comparison to how... pretty some of the photographs looked. Still, none of those photographs involved getting into Vatican archives or exploring underground crypts.

"While some aspects of the trip are most likely going to be dangerous, I have to admit I'm rather looking forward to visiting Rome." she smiled. "It seems like it'll be a nice experience."

"Good. We'll have a really good time then, and have lots of fun." He nodded.
"I bet there are castles and things like in story books...Rome sounds like the kind of place that would have castles."
He paused and looked down at his hands, his lack of experience as a world traveller making him feel a little embarased.
"I've...ah...never been on a trip. What do you do to get ready?"

And she had said 'flight' too...they weren't going to fly all that way THEMSELVES were they? And they'd need a map then wouldn't they? And what about things he should take...what would he need? He'd never spent much time away from home - who knows what he might need to have along.

"Well, I myself packed some provisions and various other supplies." Irisa pondered. "I don't think there should be too many requirements beyond those. The actual act of getting on the airplane might require some sneaking, though, unless there's a service for fairies that I don't know about."

She cheerfully shrugged.

"My bond's friend will be handling most of the paperwork involved, at least. So actually getting to and from Rome will probably be one of the easiest parts."
