Sonia smiled, letting Loki know that he was welcome. "It came to me in a dream, that sword," she explained, examining the scene for the umpteenth time. "I have seen it many times, and always I awake with a feeling of renewed strength - with a fire in my heart and the desire to create. I chose it as our symbol for that reason. It inspires me, and I hope it will continue to inspire others for generations to come."

Stepping closer to the wall, she raised one forepaw and placed it reverently upon the image.

"I feel sure that the blade itself is out there somewhere," she murmured, a faraway look in her eyes. "And I know that I must find it. When, where and how I know not, but it is out there. It waits for the Sanguinites. I know it."

She turned away from the wall and returned to Loki's side. "Come, shall we make our way onward? I can lead you to wherever you wish to go - my thirst for stories is slaked, and I feel glad that our art is appreciated."

Studying the blade, Loki nodded to Sonia. "Then I am not the only with one with symbolic dreams, it seems. Although I suppose they are different, as mine consists of a lone oak tree growing on the top of a high mountain. I have looked, but thus far, no tree."

He raised an eyebrow, clearly deep in thought. "That's the key to it all," he said softly. "Yes. When I find that tree, I will find internal peace."

He shook himself out of his reverie, and wormed his way out of the glass paneling, waiting at the edge for Sonia. "My destination is your choice, Sonia."

He looked around at the vaporous streelamps and the arguing humans again, and yet...Loki was starting to understand how one could live here. City life would never suit him, but he had gained a greater sense of appreciation for this world the Syndicate chose to live in.

"Then come, dear Loki," Sonia laughed, launching herself neatly through the broken pane, "and let me show you the wider space of the city - even here in the streets of Metropolis, we foxes can run!"

And she bounded down the fire escape, tearing off in the direction of the nearest main road. At this time of night there would be few humans walking along the pavement, making it ideal for a good-natured race. She knew she was hardly the fastest of foxes, but she did love to feel the wind as she raced. Hopefully Loki would feel the same.

The sounds of the city would be harsh and alien to any country fox, but to Sonia it was home. It was like a heartbeat, or an engine ticking over: the sign that life goes on, no matter how the world batters you. And life went on in Metropolis, day and night. The Sanguine Syndicate could not have hoped for a better place to call their own, and Sonia was proud to lead
them. Even if they never found the red sword, even if the true Sanguine Blade always eluded them, she wanted the mark to be a symbol of strength, of compassion, and of imagination.

The way things were going, the dream was no longer so distant as once it had been.

Loki appeared out of the shadows, now shoulder to shoulder with his comrade."And here I was doubting your ability to run, Sonia," he joked.

The crisp air biting at his face, the dim light shining on the pavement, the feeling of being young again-all filled Loki with uncontainable energy. He quickly fell into the rhthym of Metroplis, the beat influencing his motions as he ran on, now faster, the concert of the city sounds filling his head.

His eyes gleaming with mischief, he turned his head to look back at Sonia. "Care to join me in a race, fellow," he asked. Laughter suddenly issued from him again as the joy of life replenished itself in his body, and his normal youthful manner reappeared.

Laughing too, Sonia flicked her tail as she ran along beside him. "Gladly!" she called as they reached the pavement of the main road. "Show me what good the wilds have done you!"

With that she tore away down the side of the road, dodging in and out of the few humans still walking the streets. Loki would follow, and probably overtake. She didn't care who won. It was all about the exhilaration of speed, of the chase, of life.

Perhaps it was in every Modifox's blood to feel this way.

Loki laughed and ran after her, his tail streaming behind him. Leaping over a bench on the sidewalk, he caught up once again with Sonia.

And then he was running past her, flying through the empty streets. The rare human flung him or herself to the wall as he charged past, weaving in and out of the light poles.

With an extra burst of energy, he jumped onto a neaby fire escape ladder, pulling himself to the roofs. He laughed and sat down, waiting for the blood-spattered Sonia.

Sonia scrambled after him, laughing, feeling quite outdone and blissfully happy. She dropped on to the roof beside him, flat on her side in the attitude of one exhausted.

"...I see I shall...huff...have to try harder," she managed between laughs and gasps for breath. "You are good. What fun!"

The few faint drips of rain were a relief - it was hot here even at night of late, and she had just run rather further and faster than she was used to. Out of practice. Tch. Couldn't have that.

Loki grinned down at his fellow Elder, laughing.

"The wilds have turned me into a speedy savage, it seems," he replied. "I fear there is no hope for me any longer." He laughed and looked out to the vast expanse of land outside the city.

He felt a pull, a tug right behind his ear, insistent, pervasive.

He smiled softly and leaped down from the roof, looking up at Sonia. "I must take my leave now, Sonia. Lake Kosui has sent up a call, and I must answer. It was nice to see you again, comrade. Perhaps I wll see you again someday-and the sooner the better. May the Sanguinites prosper!"

He bowed his head low to Sonia before turning to run off, back home. He did not leave her time for a reply; some things were better when they were left unspoken.
