Evening fell over Vermilion City, shading the town in a rather appropriate shade of red-orange. The docks were splashed with water as the ships rolled in, adding to the ambience of the harbor. On one of these docks sat a lone Raichu, it's mangled tail curled against its body. Glassy eyes were transfixed on the waves as they reached upwards, stretching their salty fingers towards the little Pokemon, and, with a quick gesture, the Raichu summoned up the waves until...

"...Rai-iechu.." the Pokemon muttered as the water broke from his control, falling back into the sea. The attempt to summon a wall of water had failed. Again. The Raichu began to murmur curses in a language known by many but understood by few.

"Perhaps if I went down to the shore..," he murmured in Pokemon language, directing his gaze to the sands on the opposite side of the harbor, "I would be able to execute this rather annoying attack to perfection."

The attack was Surf, one of the three moves not normally known by 'chus, and it was the only attack the electric mouse assumed he had a shot at performing. However, he had grown bored with the training, and deciding that the fifteen minutes he spent was enough for the day, the strange-looking Pokemon turned and trotted down the docks. Ribs bulged from the creature's tiny frame, and no muscles were visible. His ghastly appearance led to many rumors among the locals; some wondered about the fact that he had many scars and injuries, though he has never been seen in a battle, and some questioned the strange scar on his left cheek- a long line that cut through the center of a circle (O)--while others questioned his eyes.

Those eyes... white and empty-looking, they were the bane of the rodent's existence. Around each eye was a circle of black-red crust that extended at the bottom like dried black tears. There was no way to explain why his eyes turned such a startling shade. In his old tribe, it was said that a Pokemon bearing eyes of white would be blind to the evil and pain of the world, but this Raichu found that this was not true.

On this particular day, the Pokemon sported a large cut running across his forehead that was stitched up on his last visit to a Pokemon Center. As one can assume, an occasional kind soul would admit the scarred creature to a Pokemon Center, which led to a series of vaccinations, bandagings, and stitches. Lately, the nurses and scientists have tracked him down, concerned that the Pokemon was prone to rabies or mange. The Raichu hated it, but the person who took him to the Pokemon Center typically had good intentions, so he held no grudge.

The Raichu, known only as 'Chidi', made his way back into town, his four paws lightly gracing the ground. Unlike most Raichu, who walk on their haunches when strolling casually, Chidi found it was easier on his weakened muscles if he walked on all fours. Rarely did he run... running led to bad things. The last time he tried running, his insides began to churn and his muscles weakened; it was as if his body were rejecting all movement, including the blood as if flowed through his veins, and forced the red liquid out of his eyes and mouth as he collapsed. Chidi called this strange ordeal 'crashing', and he certainly did not want to experience it. So he continued his stroll through the lonely town, now searching for something to eat.

"That's the one, isn't it?"

"It has to be. Can't be more than one sad-looking Raichu like that!"

"Eh, good point."

A pair of human males, approximately in their late-twenties or early-thirties, stepped from an alleyway, their eyes set on the unfortunate Pokemon. "Hey, buddy," one called out softly. "You look like you could use some food. How about it? I'll share with ya'!" He smiled warmly, sitting down on the ground and holding out a sandwich of some sort.

His partner nodded, sitting down and pulling out a sandwich of his own. "We wanderers gotta' stick together you know," he agreed. Leaning back against the wall nonchalantly, he took half of the sandwich and began to eat. Glancing sideways at his partner, he shot him a look. This was his idea afterall...and it'd better work. They could really use the money...these were their last sandwiches and there was nothing left after this.

A puzzled expression fell upon Chidi's face, eyes narrowed with brow raised, trying to add this up in his mind. Who were these people and, more importantly, what did they want? His mind told him to run... but his stomach instructed otherwise. Slowly, he inched over to the sandwich, shifting his eyes from the food and then to each man.

"What's the catch?" he chuckled grimly in Pokemon language, moreso to himself than the humans. Finally, he reached out, batting the sandwich from the man's hand and scooping it up. The Raichu sat down, no longer caring about the men; he just wanted to eat.

The first man laughed loudly at the Pokemon's antics. "You were hungry, weren't ya', buddy?" Still grinning broadly, he shot his friend a look. From what they'd heard, though this guy looked like a real scrapper, he actually wasn't all that strong in a fight. That, and he couldn't run very fast. Kinda' sad for a Raichu, but that made their plans all the easier.

The second man nodded, tearing off a chunk of his own sandwich and tossing it between the Raichu and the two men, hoping to draw him closer with more food. Just a little closer...

Chidi stared for a moment, once again feeling that strange instinct instructing him to flee. However, he shook it off; humans never did anything too terrible to him... why worry? Besides, free food.

The young Raichu shook himself, his matted coat bristling slightly as he stood and slowly approached the other piece of sandwich, his white eyes focused intently on the two strangers.

With a brief, subtle nod, the plan was set in motion.

A mangy-looking Houndour emerged from the alley, unnoticed, and circled behind the Raichu, cutting off his escape route. Only when he began growling softly did the humans respond. One man grabbed an old overcoat, stretching it out in both hands, and the other a simple belt.

These were homeless beggars, afterall...not an elite Pokemon capture team. They'd make do with what they had. It was worth it for the money they'd get for this one. They'd have sandwiches for weeks...

With a garbled shout, the two men leapt for the Raichu, hoping to catch him in the coat like a net and not need the assistance of their canine companion for anything other than blocking the Pokemon's escape.

Chidi let out a small yelp of suprise, caught completely off-guard. His ears pricked forth at the growls as he wheeled around, facing the Houndour. There was no time for him to think, and in an act of pure instinct, the Raichu attempted to release a Thundershock. This was not his best idea, as it was about as powerful as a shock of static electricity from a wool coat in winter. Seconds after, he found himself immersed in some sort of darkness.

"What in the- " the Pokemon growled, kicking madly.

A jacket or a shirt, I guess... he thought to himself, trying to analyze the situation as best he could. He was puzzled; why on earth would this happen to him, of all Pokemon? Bad luck was one explanation, but it just seemed like a constant excuse, in Chidi's mind. Are they with the CDC or something?

The lingering 'Thundershock' was only about powerful enough to set the man's hair standing on end as he struggled to keep the Pokemon trapped beneath the coat. The second patted the Houndour briefly on the head with a grin before going to help. "Lots and lots of sandwiches," he muttered, giggling manically.

Between the two of them, they finally managed to get the poor Raichu so tangled in the coat that they lifted him between them and set off for the Pokemon Center. That's where the poster had been placed and where they were supposed to take the Pokemon to receive their reward. That's what they'd been told at least, so that's what they were doing.

Soon, the sounds of the city faded away for the more quiet residential area surrounding the Pokemon Center.

With a sigh, the Raichu went limp; why should he waste his energy now? There was no chance of escaping at this point. Chidi narrowed his eyes in thought, turning the situation over in his mind again and again. He was, like everyone else, afraid of the unknown. But the pangs of concern were dulled by curiosity. Where were they going? Why?

The rodent Pokemon gave a small snort of annoyance; the situation was very frustrating and uncomfortable, and this wasn't exactly first-class travelling. If only he had gotten away...

"Not that that matters now," he reminded himself with a shrug.

Relieved that the Pokemon seemed to have given up, the two homeless Poke-nappers picked up their speed, followed closely by the Houndour on their heels. Before long, they were looking around in bewilderment.

"Where is this guy? You said he was going to meet us here."

"He's gotta' be around somewhere. If they want this thing so badly, he wouldn't be a no-show."

Their anxiety began to grow...and disappated in the same instant as a voice from the shadows beckoned them around the side of the building.

"If you've brought what I'm looking for, come this way. Let us speak over here, out of the open and the public eye..."

With a casual shrug at one another, the men changed direction and hauled their bundle to the side of the building. While mildly intimidated by the sight of the dark complected man in a business suit, they had to admit: this had to be the guy. He certainly looked like he had money!

"You're the guy from this...CRONUS place?"

"Yes. That's our little 'friend' there, I presume?" He smirked, eyes hidden behind reflective sunglasses.

"Sure. He's all yours."

"Good. Put him down and let him go. I have my own way of transporting him. You can keep your...coat...there."

Suspicions peaked. "Wait...what about our money?"

The suited man smiled in response. "All yours. Good work, boys. Perhaps we can work together again some time in the future." Pulling a wad of bills from an inside jacket pocket, he tossed the bundle on the ground.

Eagerly, the men put the coat down as the Houndour padded forward to pick the money up delicately with his teeth. As they dropped their hold on the piece of clothing, they watched with interest as the businessman pulled an odd black Pokeball from his belt and aimed the beam at the exposed Raichu. Likely, it was the last thing Chidi would see for some time.
