"The only way to extend one's life is by life bonding to your bond," said Julius. The familiar truth enabled him to collect himself somewhat and return to a halfway-dignified state. Julius clung to such truths desperately: in his situation, there was little else to cling to.

That information would be filed away for later perusal. "I understand... but can you understand why I am curious about my origins? If my blindness is not my only issue and the rest are hidden from me for the time being, I'd like to know before I make any life-altering decision that could make matters worse." Shalafi was concerned about pushing the ancient too far, but he had come here for answers, and was trying desperately to get them.

Julius took a deep breath, rubbed at his eyes, and said, "There is little else for you to worry about. Aside from the blindness you should not suffer from any maladies and should be able to live as normally as any other feien. I would never have allowed you to be bonded if that were not the case. It would be gravely irresposible of me to do such a thing."

Stepping forward at the sound of Julius' voice, Shalafi reached and tried to let his hand come to rest on the ancient's arm. "Thank you. For at least listening to me and giving me the answers I needed. I don't believe I'm a failure... I may not be as whole as some others, but I believe I have enough in the way of ingenuity to make up for it. I may have been a mistake to begin with... but I'm damned sure not going to live my life as one."
Pausing then, Shalafi seemed to make up his mind about something else, and spoke again. "I would like to come and see you again once I've reached adulthood," he began, resolving his thoughts in his head. "I would like to achieve the immortality that I hear others speaking of, but I doubt I am ready for it just yet."

"I would recommend that you wai tuntil you are an adult before undertaking such an endeavor," said Julius seriously. "You are not a failure, Shalafi." the Ancient stopped himself from adding anything further lest he give too much away.

"That recommendation is taken well under advisement," he replied, nodding. "I have too much to do, and not enough time to do it in. However, I'm not making any hasty decisions right now. I don't know how much longer I have as a child, I plan on enjoying it while I can." Smiling to Julius then, he stepped back and bowed politely to him. "I thank you for your time and your patience with me."

"Of course," said Julius, heaving a sigh as he relaxed. "I am available if you need me at any time. Simply ring the bell." Then he realized Shalafi probably had no idea where the bell was and cursed himself for the oversight.

"If I cannot find the bell, may I call for you as I did this time? I'm afraid I know nothing of this area..." Wincing slightly, the boy remembered something else. "And will likely need assistance in getting back to the portal, if it's not too much trouble."

Julius sighed and slipped the blindfold back on. "I cannot promise I will always hear your voice unless you shout. But I can lead you back to the portal." He took Shalafi by the hand this time, as the boy seemed to prefer.

"Then I'll make myself heard," Shalafi promised, following as Julius led and feeling the tingle from the portal as they approached closer. This would be one way to find his way back to it on his own next time... making a mental note of the energy, he vowed to learn more about this place and perhaps come back with Yeande to just find his way around.
