i LOVE children of eden. but i don't think it's a rock opera...there's rock themes, and it's sung through, but putting it in the same category as rent and jesus christ superstar's a bit much.
this is without a doubt one of the hardest questions in the world...william finn's a genius...jeanine tesori's composing is so alive...adam guettel...i can't wait until a light in the piazza comes to broadway. and ahrens and flaherty...they're on par with sondheim. i think they know more about music than any other composer out there...i dare anyone to name any other team who can blend so many eclectic styles into their shows.
i love me some stephen schwartz...not so much for wicked as his other works... i love children of eden and the baker's wife. his musicals DO have such a meaning...all of my favorite composers' musicals do. i just wish composers would do more original work...flaherty and schwartz and tesori need to do more original musicals.
OMG the gershwins brothas! without them, there'd be no stephen schwartz or william finn. okay, i'm just gonna stop playing the name game. it's too hard to pinpoint one fave xp ...the world of music in theater is so vast and powerful...

PossessedByDevil Well you can do favorite composer/lyricist like Styne or Sondheim or you can do composing lyricist teams like Kander & Ebb or George and Ira Gershwin. So who are your favorites and why? Hands down Leonard Bernstein. His songs are difficult (my choir sang a huge medley of West Side Story songs). One of my favorite show tunes of all time is "Something's Coming".

IrethAmandil Stephan Schwartz: Wicked did have to grow on me but now I love it. heart Andrew Lloyd Webber: Evita, Les Miserables, Cats, and most of all, The Phantom of the Opera...there are no words for how his music lifts me up when I'm depressed. Andrew Llyod Webber did not compose Les Miserables! scream It was a joint effort by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg! Rant over my favourite composers are the ones I have just mentioned, including Mr Webber.

Just to put in, because I didn't before, I think my favorite composer lyricist team is David Shire and Richard Maltby Jr. They've written some pretty great songs/shows together.
I don't know who my favorite composer/lyricist is though. I'll just say Sondheim for now until I'm sure of who it is.

Also love Andy, but he's not the one who wrote Les Miserables. Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg deserve our unending worship for that. I'm a huge Gershwin fan, too. I was so happy when someone took the trouble of putting a bunch of their work together in the musical Crazy for You. And you have to thank Rodgers and Hammerstein for some of the classics: Cinderella, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, to name a few. *taps chin* Who else? I think that's it for now...
