A letter arrived in Keirro's Mailbox:

Keirro,

Do not forget the scientific method and how it can be applied to the Principles of Psychiatry. It is difficult to distinguish something so abstract as being sentient or even possessing intelligence. Should you decide to pursue your study, you will find that there are many stimuli that can be used to test responses. Here are some of my personal recommendations:

Place a mirror in front of the mist. Watch to see if it is able to recognize the image.
Use various light stimuli to determine its dependency on sight.
Try to surprise it with sudden sounds or movement.
Sit down and just simply observe its behavior as you remain perfectly still.

These are some of the tests I recommend. Do not let strangers around it until you are able to understand it more. I have known that you tend to get stressed easily. I would recommend trying to exercise relaxation techniques to ease tension. It could also have an effect on this mist you have discovered.

Journal entry

I have perform the following stimuli to test the mental capacity of the mist:

Light/dark test: Where sudden changes in light and dark were used to determine visual dependency and expression of suprise. The results of this test are rather minimal. It does not seem to be affected by light or dark, but it displays minor erractic behavior in react to this stimuli.

Sound Test I have tried communicating with it in various ways to test its ability to hear. It reacts to my voice and seems to react more strongly to sounds, rather than visual aids.

Mirror I placed a mirror in front of the mist to test its ability to be self-aware. It avoided the mirror and did not show interest in the reflection.

Basic commands I used basic commands, both with guestures and no guestures, to test the mist's compacity to follow directions. It follows only the simplest of commands such as "stop" and "go".

Conclusion

It displays intelligence of some sort. It is like an infant in that it reacts more strongly to sound than sight. It has the ability to follow very basic commands, and follows them very well. It reminds me of a cat. It is rather distant and remains to avoid allowing me to get close to it.

Journal,

There is something strange about the mist. It has been showing images more random and at a frequent pace. This seemed to start without provocation. The wisp is becoming thin and even the images are showing signs of transparency. I have upped my interaction with the mist and it seems to cause it to thicken and the images it produces are much more pleasant. I recently recieved advice from a college of mine who suggested using electroconvulsive therapy on the mist. The college could not give me a clear reason why, only that "it may prove interesting". The very idea! How could he suggest such a thing? I have other things about this thing that I am concerned about. Its behavior is proving to be even more erratic and it shows no signs of ever regaining the ability to communicate verbally.

Lemonade

or When The Mist started to become solid.

Keirro plopped elegantly onto her sofa. The mist was starting to show more signs of sentience, even without the testing that was recommended by Dr. Wundt. Keirro grimaced as she thought about the response to her letter. Was Wundt implying that Keirro was having a nervous breakdown?
No, that would be too upfront for him. Wundt was like that one relative who made their criticisms with old-fashioned, subtle, passive aggressive methods. Wundt usually implied insanity with much more tact than he displayed in his letter. Perhaps, Keirro mused, he was going through hard times himself. Everyone seemed a little stressed these days.
Keirro turned her attention to the Reverie as it entered the living room. It was a pleasant shade of yellow, like lemonade. The soothing color gave Keirro an idea.

“Perhaps I should make some lemonade. After all, who drinks hot tea during the summer? “ said Keirro. The wisp slinked closer to Keirro like a cautious feline and followed the psychologist into the nearby kitchen. Keirro watched it hide under her table from the corner of her eye.

“I’m half tempted to feed you a saucer of milk. You’re a very animal-like for something barely tangible. Perhaps you represent my sexuality, or even my inner maternal nature. Both are trying to get out, I’m quite certain of it.” Keirro said as she started to slice some lemons that were resting on the countertop. The sun warmed the kitchen with a pastel glow. It gave the room the feel of a summer painting.

“It’s easy to make lemonade. You squeeze juice from some lemons, mix it with a little sugar and water and you have a beverage. If you want to add a little sophistication, you should add berries. I have some in the fridge, I’ll add them when I get the beverage just right.” Keirro grunted as she squeezed the juice and pulp from the lemon rind into a pitcher. It took quite a bit of effort to get the most of what she could from the lemons. A spurt of lemon juice fell next to the reverie.
The reverie vanished briefly, but reappeared on top of the table as if to flee the juice.

“It’s just juice.” Keirro growled. She poured sugar and water into the pitcher. Finally she added some fresh berries and made herself a glass of the fresh drink. She took a sip and gave a relaxed sigh.
There was starting to stir in the reverie. That lemonade looked good, it looked like it would be refreshing. It wanted to one day be able to drink lemonade. It wanted to try all sorts of things. How was it possible to do such things?

The Reverie had been developing more and more of a conscious since its birth in Keirro’s closet. It felt wonderful to simply drift in the wind like smoke. It felt like freedom and elegance were in harmony when the reverie drifted from to and fro. Why should one want to be anything else than a wisp or something fleeting?
It watched how humans fretted over their worries. If only they were like reveries. Then they, too, could be free from troubles. In its worldview, Keirro should definitely try to become a reverie. They could be irresponsible together for as long as they lived.
All that changed with the simple act of making a beverage. When it watched Keirro make that yellow and pink drink and then drink it ice cold, she looked so refreshed and relaxed.
The thoughtof redemption flashed through the reverie. It focused its energy into becoming something more. It was ready to become a part of the human world. It now wanted to be more of a wisp.
But fate was not going to make it enjoyable. A milky-gray mist took over the Illusionary’s sight like a fog. The joyful, pastel colors of Keirro’s kitchen faded away into a foreign land with cloudy skies. In the horizon it could see a beast running towards something with resolve. Long dead grasses covered the land as the sun baked everything that dared to travel in daylight. The heat was unbearable; the air was so hot that one could barely breathe.
The Illusionaray just wanted to return to Keirro and the coolness of the kitchen and relax away from the scorching sun. It let out a lonely howl in the wasteland.

When Keirro heard a howl in her kitchen, she dropped the very glass she was drinking from and turned quickly to see the source of the howl. There was something different about the mist now. There was a new image that wisped, but yet seemed so real. The image of an infant opened its eyes and the mist, for the first time, reached out to Keirro.

Journal

The mist has appeared to have developed into an infant. This makes it much easier to study it as I can now see actual emotions. It is not a very clear image, but it will do. The mist-child is still mostly mute, but ocasionally I can hear whimpers when I walk away from it.
It is a very clingy infant. I can't let it out of my sight without some form of protest. I tried ignoring it, but it actually whined for five hours non-stop. I never thought it was possible for something to do that. My medical books speak nothing of cases this severe and I dread writing to Wundt. Dr. Sigmund will just start to ramble about innuendos and I can't possibly imagine what Dr. Mengele would do to the infant.
I have a spare room in the house, luckily. With the arrival of Apollo, the NekoMata, and now this, I know that this house will be too small for the three of us to live in.
I can't afford to raise another living thing until the number of patients I recieve increase. I have been seeing more, so that is a good sign. We will probably move into a new home after a few months if things keep improving. Maybe then, I can afford an office not located in my living room.

Homemade Paradise

Ranis's growth from oracle to infant

“ You have stuck around, even after that incident with Ayame.” Said Keirro as she flipped through the pages of her fashion magazine. The oracle had taken a liking to crawling over Keirro’s legs, although it still didn’t make much noise.

“Rambunctious little rug rat, aren’t you?” said Keirro as she glanced at the mist-child. It blinked at Keirro, and started to nibble on her magazine.

“No!” growled Keirro as she tapped the Oracle’s nose. It growled in response to Keirro’s gentle punishment, but stopped chewing on the magazine.

“It’s like raising a pet. I should name you, really.” Said Keirro. She thumbed through her magazine. The word ‘Ranis’ popped into her mind and it started to stick in the psychologist’s mind like taffy. She couldn’t figure out why the name stuck; she had no particular attachment to it. Somehow, it seemed to suit the adventurous little brat.
“Ranis suits you.” Said Keirro as she watched the oracle snuggle under a blanket.

Ranis. The oracle curled up under the blanket as Keirro’s new name for it lingered in its mind. It finally felt like its guardian was starting to care for it. She was so distant from the oracle. She never seemed to show it the affection it craved until now, when she finally named it.

To help it think, it started chewing on Keirro’s foot. Keirro muttered something incomprehensible to the oracle and jerked her foot away. The oracle then found itself being picked up and held upright by Keirro.

“Let’s go outside.” She said as she carried the child to her backyard. Being outside sounded like a good idea to the oracle. It calmly let Keirro bring it to the backyard paradise she meticulously kept. The air was so wonderful here! There were so many smells and colors and sounds! It made the oracle’s heart fill with joy.

It started to finally identify itself with the name Ranis. It snuggled against Keirro as it sought affection from her. Keirro growled but allowed Ranis to get comfortable.

Sometime had passed before Keirro looked down at the oracle only to find that all traces of the mist had vanished and a fully solidified infant rested peacefully in her arms.

It's Not Mine!

Ranis growled as he was poked by a strange black man. He glared at this new person.
"Gary, please stop poking the baby." said Keirro as she tried to pry Ranis off of her.
"I thought you didn't want kids, Keir. " The gentleman was obviously confused. He tried to help Keirro pry the infant off of her. Ranis started to gnaw on Gary with his gummy mouth while growling like a feral child.
" So, who's the daddy? " growled Keirro's mother, Anne as she glared at Gary.
"Mother, It's not mine. I found him." growled Keirro. Ranis growled in unison with the women as he was removed from Keirro.

"He looks like your baby. He has your face and your sassy attitude." said Anne. She grabbed the feral acting infant from Gary and spanked it with her hand. There was a strange moment of silence with Ranis. Now he was the confused one. He had never been spanked before and this opened up new views on his policy of biting.

His bottom smarted, but not too badly. It was just enough to make the infant reconsider biting around the elderly woman. He stopped growling at Keirro's mother, but still remained fidgety.

"He's NOT biologically mine. I found him in my house. End of story." said Keirro. Ranis flicked his tail in irritation until Anne provided a teething ring for him to vent his frustration on.

"Keirro, you can't afford this child. He has no father, you are still paying your school debt and you live in a tiny house. " said Anne.
"I know, mother." sighed Keirro.

"I'll help raise him. " said Gary. He patted Ranis on the head gently. Ranis glared up at Gary. Ranis was unsure what Gary ment by that. If it ment living with Keirro, he was flat out against it.
"I always wanted kids, I have a job, and I'll bring him to church while Keirro works. I'll make sure that Keirro doesn't have to worry about money. I'll even help pay for an addition to the house for the Baby." said Gary.

Ranis could sense that Anne wasn't pleased.
"I never thought my daughter would be an unmarried mother." she said. Keirro became rageful. Ranis hissed and threw the teething ring to the ground in protest to whatever Keirro was angry about.
"I WANTED THIS! DO YOU THINK I WILL BE FAILURE? I CAN RAISE THIS CHILD BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE BACK IN THAT GOD-FORSAKEN NIEGHBORHOOD!" Keirro roared. Ranis had never seen Keirro so angry. Even Gary looked fearful of Keirro's wrath. Ranis looked up at Keirro in shock and awe. Meanwhile, Anne remained clam, ut there was still a sense of boiling anger.

Ranis wanted out of that room right away. He whined and tried to wiggled out of Anne's grip.
"Fine, if you want to take care of it, go for it. Just let me now when the REAL father shows up. " said Anne as she gathered her things and placed Ranis on the floor.
Keirro sighed and plopped on the couch. Gary looked around nervously until finally speaking up.
"I'm going to go make you something to drink." he said. Ranis watched the man scamper off to the kitchen. He crawled over to Keirro and started to teeth on her shoe.

Journal
The number of patients I have been receiving is increasing. Which would be great for my pocketbook, if it wasn’t for Ranis.
The infant is a little monster. He has destroyed my best pillows and furniture by gnawing on it! Then he constantly grows, bites, and glares at anyone that comes into his presence with the exception of a Fa’e named Silver. For some reason, the little beast enjoys Silver’s company.
The worst interaction he’s had was with a family of five. Ranis outright threw a rock at a blue-skinned child and nearly caused anarchy at the Fair.
I can’t begin to understand the boy’s behavior. I’ve looked in all of my books and I’ve tried nearly everything to discipline him. I feel ready to give up.

Hilel

The New Moon

“It is something we all strive for, though we are not sure why we should. Can we ever really go back home? We have no memories of the heavens or god’s glorious face. Our ears no longer hear the voices of the holy choir or their bells. Yet, it is not these things we miss most of all.”

The beast that looked like a lion and a wooly goat gazed up at the khaki colored new moon in the middle of a desert. The sands danced around the animal, but the creature never moved. It was intent and focused as it glanced back down to the sands.
It walked to a hard object in the sand and sniffed it. It was a metal tool from long ago. The beast thought it was stunning that metal could survive erosion in this harsh land. There must have been a civilization nearby if this tool was simply out in the desert.
The beast peered through the sandy winds and spotted a rocky outcrop to take shelter in.
It wasted no time traveling to the temporary sanctuary in order to seek relief from the sand and freezing temperatures. The cave was slightly warmer than the outside air, but it would do.
As the beast looked around the cave, it could see signs of its former inhabitants. There were metal shards and bones scattered. Ancient urns and jewelry littered the inner chamber. Finally, the animal noticed the cave paintings...

“Ezekiel.”

Ranis woke up with start and looked around his nursery. The dream he just had was very upsetting for him. Where was Keirro? The little infant started to wail for his guardian
until Keirro ran into the nursery to soothe the infant.
“Shush.” Said Keirro. The child definitely seemed distressed over a dream. Keirro brought the infant into the kitchen with her to prepare him some warm milk. Ranis snuggled against his guardian. All he wanted was her comfort and her security.
It didn’t take long to the little Ranis to doze back into slumberland.

Journal

All I really need is just a day to myself. It wasn't easy but I decided to leave Ranis with Gary for the day while I went out shopping and got pampered for a day. Who knew that spa treatments felt soooo good? I did the works. I had my nails done, my hair was taken care of and I een had a message.
Regretfully, when I went to pick up Ranis from Gary's, he looked very frustrated and I have an idea why.

I just can't control this child! I don't want to start spanking him, but I may start reconsidering my disciplinary tatics for dealing with him. It would be nice to talk to someone without worrying about them calling animal control or child services.
