For a moment, the most he could hear was his own gasping breath, for his long ears had been clogged with water. The boy gave his head a small shake to rid himself of it, his thoughts blank.

Varian had showed up- he'd heard the splashing almost as soon as he'd cleaned his ears. Daemyn was almost sorry he had not realized it sooner.

As he felt himself tugged, the fae crawled through the stream on hands and knees. He couldn't help it. Laughter began to swell forth from the darker child, soft at first, then in an amused wave as he turned and sat on the bank. He was mostly laughing at himself, and the irony. Varian had gotten himself wet anyway.

"This is nothing." He grinned up at the other boy, his face partially hidden behind the long, silver strands of hair.

Reaching out, he plucked at the bottom of the other's yukata, apparently more worried for it than the wearer. "Are you?" The other hand ran itself down, running over his knees that were skinned and beginning to bleed, but minutely. There was no serious damage. Daemyn studied the blood on his fingers for a moment, before slicking it down the front of his shirt. Mother would be most displeased...

Varian gaped at Daemyn, seemingly astonished by the other boy's lack of caring about the fact that he was bleeding - it hurt when you bled! He remembered that well enough from his fight with Kayce.

"I'm fine - I - why did you do that?"

He sounded completely bewildered; and he was. Why on earth had Daemyn injured himself to keep Varian from falling in? The only person he could think of who would do that was his mother, and she didn't count since she had to. It was what mothers did.

His yukata...the bottom was water stained now, and a bit muddy as well. But for once, he didn't care about that. Oh, he would later - but right now, it was only a vague realization that he was muddy and watered.

Then he watched Daemyn wipe the blood on his shirt, and he wrinkled his nose. Ugh...it made him wish he had a napkin or something.

Hmm...maybe his mother could sacrifice her jacket? It wasn't like it was appealing, anyway.

Daemyn chuckled again, reclining back on his elbows on the bank. It wasn't often others gaped at him like fish. Did it really seem all that surprising to Varian? Granted, he'd never received the same favor before, so he wouldn't know. To be honest, it was the first time he'd cared to save a stranger.

After musing over it for a moment, Daemyn tried to arrange his features into the coolness they had been, though a faint hint of a smile remained. Beauty had asked him a question.

"Appreciation."

Shifting his weight, he picked himself off the ground. His hair was freed from its tie, falling around his dark features, dripping.

"How long do you think it takes for a fae to catch a cold?" He implored, beginning to move for the bridge again, though he politely paused for the other before he would climb the bank.

Appreciation?

Feeling a hint of a smile slip onto his face at that, Varian followed Daemyn up to the bridge again. How truly strange...and how strange it was that it made him feel happy to hear that.

"A cold? I'm not certain...I've never been ill, myself."

So the other boy was a fae...well, it was all out in the open now. Ignoring the fact that they didn't know each others names, anyway.

Glancing at the water, and remembering how cold it was, he returned his gaze to Daemyn. Then he made his decision, with a firm nod.

"Come with me; mother will have something to clean your wounds, and warm you."

There was no room for argument as he spoke, as he crossed his arms across his chest and inspected the other fae. Yes...it was only right that he make certain Daemyn was taken care of, since Daemyn had only fallen in because of him.

Varian could be difficult enough to argue with when he wanted something - and when he felt this determined, it was unlikely he'd relent at all.

Never had a cold? Well neither did he, but Sibuna had them all the time. At least, she claimed she did. Along with cancer, ecoli, scurvy, and just about every other illness that wasn't sexually transmitted. He was curious what it was really like to be sick, though it didn't seem like a happy occasion.

Yes, that little question had gotten him most of the answers he'd needed. He and Varian were on the same level, then, and shared some common fellowship. He'd sensed it earlier, coming up from the duck pond, but now it was confirmed.

At the command, Daemyn blinked. He should decline an offer like that- a warrior didn't become hardened by bundling up and having his scraped knees tended to.

But it wasn't an offer. It was a command, and not even a radical one. He could sit and be courteous- that was what his childhood had been thus far. Not only that, but Beauty didn't look like he was going to be reasoned with.

Bowing his head slightly in acknowledgment, the dark fae followed after Varian, trailing beside him with long and easy strides. If he really minded the small streams of blood trickling down his knees, he didn't show it.

Satisfied that Daemyn was following him, Varian headed out of the little wooded area, and made straight for his mother, ignoring some of the looks they were getting. But when Aletea saw, them, well...

"Varian?! What on earth-"

She was a little surprised, needless to say. The last thing she'd been expecting was a muddy Varian, followed by a bleeding child. A bleeding fae child.

"You have bandages, don't you? Take care of him."

And while his mother gaped at him for another few moments, she then opened her purse. The bandages and antiseptic spray were more for her other children, as Varian never did anything requiring them, but she kept them with her just in case.

Taking them, she quickly began to attend to Daemyn.

"Are you two alright? What on earth were you doing?"

With any of her other children, she would have simply sighed, laughed, and taken care of the injuries. But while she took care of Daemyn's, she was still very surprised; Varian was not the sort of child to get muddy through play or rough housing.

The only 'rough housing' he did tended to be messy, though; and hardly playful.

Varian-- so that was Beauty's name? As the woman gaped openly at them, Daemyn cooly resisted the urge to grin. It was amusing to see those sort of reactions from adults. They were supposed to be the controlled ones, after all.

Curiously, he listened to Varian boss his mother around, sliding out one ebony leg after the other as she tended to him. The sting of the antiseptic received an involuntary shiver up his spine the first time it was sprayed on, and Daemyn silently bit into his lip to keep the same thing from happening again with the next one.

"Nothing but a small accident, ma'am. I think we're okay." He informed the woman, his voice taking on a warm tone of reassurance and a childish sort of indifference. It was as if it didn't hurt him at all to have her prodding at his wounds.

In addition, a sweet smile was offered to her- the one that made his own mother melt on numerous occasions. It wasn't as if he didn't mean it; it just wasn't something he often did on his own accord.

While some might find it odd to see the child ordering the mother about, it really was the simplest way to do things. Aletea would have treated Daemyn even without the 'orders' - and to scold Varian would just make the boy even more insufferable.

Perhaps this wasn't the best method for dealing with a child like him, but she didn't know how to react to it - all of her other children were very different.

"Well, if you're sure..."

What an adorable child! Aletea could't help but wonder how Varian had managed to keep his temper long enough to be this polite with the boy, however - he'd been a horrible mood when he'd left.

Glancing over at Varian, she gave a sigh. His yukata was ruined...and he was going to demand a new one, she bet. Well, her paycheck couldn't cover a shopping trip right now, so he'd have to make do with his others.

"Varian, we should probably head home...see if we can salvage that yukata, somehow."

Maybe it was possible...maybe.

Varian, glancing down at his yukata again, scowled. Salvage it? Ha! As if she could. Ah well...probably best to go change, and then have her take him to get a new one.

Having received consent in the form of a nod, Aletea began to walk away, since Daemyn's injuries were taken care of. Glaring irritably at her as she left, Varian turned back to Daemyn.

"Thank you."

For earlier; for saving him from getting injured (although his yukata was still ruined, but that was his own fault), and for improving his mood.

It wasn't the mother's fault. She was doing what she could. Still, he couldn't see himself ever addressing his own surrogate mother in such a way. He was amused by the difference, nonetheless. Flies with honey, Varian, not vinegar. Daemyn imagined he might find that out for himself some day. But beauty like that was almost nothing without such a spirit.

Listening to the exchange between the two, he decided it was probably for the best that he found Sibuna too, and explain while his clothes were wet. It might give him an excuse to be free for a little while until Sibuna realized it and shooed him off to put on warm clothes. Yes, the day was looking good...

His smile fled from his features, a small smirk replacing it. He bowed his head to Varian, in a humble acknowledgment to the thanks.

"I hope our paths will put me again by your side, Varian." Enigma told the blonde sincerely, straightening. It was a silent suggestion that they meet again in another time, and a dismissal for the both of them. It wasn't only Varian who was thankful for this day. Perhaps the park itself hadn't cured any ills, but it had promised opportunity for finding something that might. For that, Daemyn didn't think so badly of it anymore.

Without further formality, the boy shifted to the side, sweeping his hair aside as he made off quietly back down the way he had originally came.
