A loud, low-pitched yowl resonated in the trees as Alexander felt Moirai’s teeth on his hide. They hadn’t sunk in deep, or for very long, but he was surprised at how much it’d hurt for that instant. Having never been in a real fight before, Alexander was unprepared. However, now he knew what to expect and would not make that mistake again.

Turning quickly to the fighting siblings, he tried to maneuver in between them and under Moirai’s chin, to get at her neck. The young wolf finally saw his chance and sped for the sensitive skin that covered her throat. The least he could do was distract her from his best friend. “Leave him alone!” Alexander shouted, baring his teeth in the middle of the motion.

Stop, Moirai! They have done nothing to you!

Quit backing down like a mutt! Rip their throats out and be done with it! Who cares if you die? At least you'll get what you want!

Listen to reason, Moirai. There are two of them, and one of you. Catch Deimos next time. When he's alone . . .

Shaking her head, the femme bit at Alexander's back, snarling fiercely. For once, she listened to the calmer voice, the middle ground. It was right. Two of them . . . one of her. Even though they were younger, she was still only one body; one set of fangs, four sets of claws.

Somehow, she managed to get loose of the navy male, her throat burning with pain. In the span of a second, she leapt around him and got in one final attack, knocking Deimos off his weary paws and tearing viciously at his belly before bolting away.

Hoping it was a fatal enough wound, she laughed gleefully over her shoulder as she ran. "We'll meet again, baby brother. Or not!"

Then she was gone.

Alexander let loose a yelp that turned into a snarl at the teeth on his back. That hurt! At least it was a fairly protected area and he did get a good grip on her throat. Suddenly, he felt Moirai pull free and watched as she threw in a moment’s worth of attacks on Deimos before fleeing.

Immediately concerned about his best friend, Alexander dashed over to Deimos, ignoring the pain in his back and the lesser pain in his shoulder. “Are you all right?” The navy male asked, voice laced with extreme concern. Alexander nudged Deimos with his nose, trying to elicit some sort of response.

He wouldn't whine. He wouldn't.

But it hurt so badly . . . Pain lanced through his injured paw, his belly burning unbearably. Blood matted his fur, still pouring from his wounds. When he heard Ander's voice, he thought it was the most soothing thing that had ever sounded in his ears. Yet his friend could not stay . . .

"Ander, leave . . . Leave, or she'll kill you to get to me," he whispered, blue eyes glassy from pain. He had never felt so horrible in his life. Wherever her teeth had ripped at him seemed to burn like fire, as if her fangs had been tipped with poison.

"I don't want anything to happen to you . . . "

Though Deimos tried his hardest not to show weakness, Alexander knew that something just wasn't right with his friend. He sniffed the other male once more before licking gently at his wounds. He desperately wanted this all to go away. Why, oh why hadn't they been quieter? More careful?

Ignoring Deimos' words, Alexander continued his task. He couldn't leave... not now. He just knew the second Deimos was alone, his sister would... Don't think about that.

"I won't, Dei," Alexander began, finally giving the red wolf a nickname. "There's nothing I've wanted more than to be by your side at this time." He stopped cleaning the wounds and locked blue eyes with blue eyes, silently telling Deimos that this wasn't up for debate.

The spotted male realized at that moment that he was in it for the long haul; he could never leave Alexander now, even if he wanted to, and that was the last thing he ever wanted to do. But did his friend feel the same. If wolves could cry, his eyes would be misting with tears. Instead, he whimpered for an entirely different reason and licked his friend's muzzle.

"Ander . . . she will come back . . . " he murmured, rolling painfully upright. His belly muscles complained, and more blood seeped, but he was more vulnerable on his side. "What can we do? I'm so sorry you got involved in this . . . "

It seemed as if this encounter had aged Alexander far into the future. He was no longer the careless, cocky adolescent, but had switched into responsible leader mode. The blue wolf stood very strong with his ears pricked and tail up. He figured such a position of confidence would ward off anyone thinking about coming their way. Besides, he needed to be strong for Deimos.

After returning the lick, Alexander replied to the question. “We expect her to come back, so there won’t be any more surprises. We have to be ready at any moment.” The smaller male’s tail stiffened – just thinking about Moirai made his blood boil. However, his expression immediately softened when he looked down at Deimos. They needed to find somewhere safe. But more than that, they needed to stick together.

“I’m not letting you out of my sight until you’re healed,” Alexander proclaimed, looking serious to his friend. “It’d be even better if we had more wolves on our side.” More wolves…? Alexander pondered the thought for a second, his gaze getting lost in space. Well, that would be almost like a pack! “I’m tired of being alone,” Alexander admitted softly, coming back to reality.

“But first… do you think you can make it over there to the underbrush where it’s less open?”

Deimos paused, guessing at his friend's unspoken words. More wolves? A pack? His heart lightening at the thought of being surrounded by potential friends made the pain a little more bearable, especially since he would be by Ander's side.

Slowly and painfully, he got to his feet and limped over to the thick brush on the other side of the clearing, crawling through a gap in the branches to a little hollow where a deer had slept at some point in the past. Collapsing in the middle of it, he felt all of his energy draining. He needed sleep . . .

"Ander . . . ? Thank you . . . "

Those two words spoke volumes, and Deimos hoped Alexander understood all that he was thanking the navy wolf for.

His eyelids growing heavier and heavier, he fell into the darkness of sleep before his head even touched his paws.

Alexander watched a battle damaged Deimos rise from his position on the ground and head for the safety of the brush. The blue male immediately rushed to his side and leaned against Dei, supporting his wounded frame. He desperately hoped his friend would heal completely, restoring the fiery creature to his prime. Deimos’ fire was one thing that drew Alexander to him. Alexander silently realized Deimos was the only wolf he didn’t try to dominate. They were equals. He had always tried to be on the top of the chain, but there was something deep inside his friend he admired greatly. He assumed the feeling was admiration, anyway, but sometimes it felt more like a magnet.

“Ander…? Thank you…”

Almost freezing him in place, those words hit Alexander like… a full stomach after being starved for weeks. No, years. The tail that flowed neutrally behind him wagged softly. His tail wagged so slowly because, even though Dei’s praises made him extremely happy, it wasn’t the kind of bubbly excited happy that causes a tail to go crazy. No, this was the kind of powerful, moving happy that stayed with a wolf until he met his end. Such simple words, but they had already taken root deep in the smaller male’s heart. He knew for sure that he would be with this fiery red he cared so much about for the rest of their lives. And he was glad.

He didn’t get a chance to respond before Deimos was fast asleep in the hollow. Alexander looked down on him with the most compassionate blue eyes a wolf could have. He sat strongly beside his friend, curling a tail around the sleeping form. It was then that his insides couldn’t hold onto the thoughts any longer. Tipping his nose to the wind, he poured his soul out in the form of music. Alexander howled in sadness for the events that had taken place. He howled as a threat to any who might try to approach at this precious moment. He howled for all he had lost in his life. Then, for a second, Alexander peered down at the sleeping Deimos.

His muzzle pointed skyward and he then howled for all he had gained.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Deimos didn't know how long he slept, yet when he awoke, the sun seemed to be in the same place that it had been when his eyes had slipped shut. It was the next day at the least than. Maybe two.
But no matter how long it had been, Alexander was still by his side. Looking down at his friend, the spotted male nuzzled the navy one's neck, thinking deep thoughts. Some unhappy, some filled with joy.
A pack. Their pack.
He knew they could pull it off, but one of his unhappier thoughts followed his previous one; who would want to follow them? Two adolescent males, both with troubled pasts and one with a veritable demon on his tail.
So the true question wasn't, could they do it? No. It was, did others think they could do it?
His insecurities hurt about as much as his physical wounds, which he was reminded of as soon as he took a deep breath to yawn. Belly muscles aching, scabs pulling painfully as he shifted, the spotted male flicked his ears back and let out a small hiss. As far as pain went, it wasn't all that bad, considering. But it wasn't great either.
Deciding to be lazy, he remained laying, which also kept him from disturbing his friend's slumber. He knew deep down that the other male hadn't left his side since Moirai's attack, and he didn't want to steal anymore of the navy one's rest than he already had.
Wolves live out in the middle of nowhere. In the mountains, in the forests and on the plains. On that note, they cannot operate alarm clocks. Nevertheless, Alexander had been waking from his rest every hour to check on Deimos. It was a mystery how he’d done it, it just happened because he needed to. He needed to look after his friend. Alexander has his own cuts and bruises, but they paled in comparison. Not to mention the fact that he was completely oblivious to the twine of pain whilst caring for the other.
Sure enough, on the hour, Alexander’s eyes slowly opened to check the surroundings. Had it been any other time, he would have listened for a bit, then raised his head to look around. Finishing with a few sniffs and deciding the coast was clear, he would drift back to sleep. This time it was different. Blue eyes met blue eyes as the navy wolf awakened. He was glad to see that Deimos hadn’t wandered off in the few moments he’d been awake. Alexander was content to simply lay there and stare at him for a few seconds before offering a friendly lick.
Rising slowly to a sit, the young wolf let out a large, long yawn. The memories of yesterday flooded back to him and he took a moment to zone out and think about what their next move would be. They definitely needed to stick together, but rallying a few friends couldn’t hurt. But first…
“How’re you?” Alexander asked, peering down at his best friend. He blinked sleepily before letting another yawn escape. Then, he thought he should put all his thoughts on the table. After all, what could it hurt?
“This might sound strange but… What do you think about starting a pack? You and me?”
The lick made him smile, and he rolled onto his side, not yet ready to move very much. It was slightly easier to yawn this way too.
"I'm better. Just a bit sore, but I haven't really moved much yet, so I'm not sure." Grinning, he flickered his ears slightly, watching his friend.
When Alexander asked his second question, Deimos didn't even have to think of his answer. The 'yes' escaped his maw without first thoughts, let alone second. Strange? He didn't think it was strange. He thought it was the most wonderful idea he had ever heard. It was even enough to get him up onto his weary paws so that he could nuzzle his friend and lick his cheek before giving him the usual ear nipping.
"How are you?"
Alexander’s brain exploded with ideas at the instant of Deimos’ agreement. His tail began to wag frantically. He hopped up on all fours, prancing back and forth. The navy male gave Deimos a small nuzzle before beginning to voice all of his thoughts. “Wonderful!” He exclaimed, trying to verbalize his ideas in a way that would make sense. “I think it should be a loose pack, where we’re free to wander. I know you and I don’t want to lose our freedom.” He grinned, slipping into the play bow before rising to n** Deimos in return.
“Also, someone told me when I was a pup to respect the forest and it will pay you back… kind of thing. So I was thinking…” Alexander had always mused about having his own pack. “What if we kind of used… other creatures as messengers and helpers? And to pay them they can live safely in the packlands?” It didn’t even cross his mind that he might be hitting Deimos with too much information at once.
Blinking, the spotted male laughed at Alexander's enthusiasm. It was contagious, and once he processed what his friend already said, he shot back his answers and his own questions in return.
"A loose pack? That's ingenious! Like, we'd all essentially be loners, yet with the underlying bond of a pack? I love it!" Getting caught up in the excitement crackling back and forth between them, he practically bounced on his paws, going back and forth between licking and nipping at his friend.
"Messengers?" It made sense; if they were going to be a pack of loners, it would be useful to have other animals as messengers, seeing as howling could be a danger as well as a tool, especially if they traveled to neighbor pack lands for prey. "How would we tell between messenger and prey? Have them memorize a code word, or phrase? Just so they don't accidentally get eaten."
The excitement emanating from Deimos only served to fuel his own. Rising onto hind legs for a moment, he added, “Yes! That’s perfect!” The blue wolf fell gracefully back down onto all fours and circled Deimos, tail wagging all the while. “Messengers are good for long distances, but howling is fine for close communication, right?”
The way those two acted… it was as if they were shooting insults around, trying to best each other. Alexander was so happy to be starting a pack with his friend. His best friend. Suddenly, Alexander calmed, staring straight into the other’s eyes. His tail wagged slower and slower, until finally resting, relaxed, behind him. He padded forward and buried his muzzle in Deimos’ thick coat.
Almost inaudible, Alexander whispered, “I’m glad you’re with me.”
