"Very silly indeed," she said with a nod. She blushed again at his persistance in complimenting her. No one had ever said such things to her before. "Thank you for all of your compliments, Virgil, although I'd be inclined to disagree. I'm not elegant or graceful, and if I appear so it is probably due to the general build of my breed rather than any personal beauty." She adjusted her tendril wings a bit, not really for any reason except to gain more time to think of what to say. She didn't mind at all his way with words, or lack thereof; it didn't even occur to her in the least. Her attention was currently centered on his compliments, although part of her wished he wouldn't talk about her so. She didn't know what to say to it, no one had ever said such things about her before. Her? Beautiful? Graceful? Elegant? Impossible. Wasn't it?

Virgil shrugged and tried for another faint smile. It sort of worked. "No problem," he said after a moment. "Maybe it's just my opinion... or the fact that I haven't seen you be clumsy yet. Still. Even if you are clumsy you're still attractive." Well. He still sounded a little as though he were talking about the weather rather than a lovely mare but he thought he was improving. Relaxing a little. Dark ears swivelled about a few times, making sure that nothing had crept up behind him whilst he had been talking. No. All seemed well. Yes. Everything was fine.
"So. Your herd, what's it like?" he'd often wondered what it would be like to be part of a group like that.

"I used to be very clumsy," she admitted with a smile and a giggle, "but I've become less so, but I'm not entirely sure for what reason. Whatever the reason may be, I'm glad for it." She couldn't help but laugh at this, remembering a few clumsy acts she'd performed in her younger days. "But attractive, I'm still unsure. Herd? It's nice, you're never alone unless you want to be, and the feeling of security it brings is nice. There's lots of nice horses in the herd, too," said she with a nod. A bundle of white fur, covered in multi-colored markings, hid in a nearby tree. He spied the two nequus below, watching them with a mischevious gleam in his blue eyes, and wiggled his butt in the air. The blue one was closer, he noted, and would be easiest to pounce. He didn't mean any harm; truly, that would be an immensely foolish thing that would probably equal either death or a serious injury, neither of which he needed. But, he simply couldn't help himself. After a final pause for mental preparation, the rainbow-marked rit jumped from the branch he was on, straight onto the back of the bae, but made certain his claws were retracted. "Boo!" He shouted after a perfect landing.

Virgil smiled slightly to Nizhoni's statement. "Part of growing up; we get better at using our bodies as we grown into them and-"
And then something landed on his back. Virgil screamed and reared up in panic, ears flat back, eyes rolling. He'd known it, known everything was going too well, know he'd relaxed too much. The world was dangerous, dangerous and bad and if you stopped looking around for just a moment it would kill you. He should have known it wouldn't be alright to just let his guard down and chatter and now he would pay for his folly.
Not stopping to note if the whatever-it-was had fallen from him or not, the stallion bolted for a fair distance before skidding to a halt and prancing about, eyes rolling wildly. All coherent thought, along with the power of speech, seemed lost to him as he stood there, muscles tensed to run again, panting and trembling as he desperately searched for the threat so that he could dart in the opposite direction.

Niz listened to his statement with interest, nodding to show she agreed, when suddenly he stopped and panicked. She was startled, surely, not having noticed the bundle of fur landing on the back of the dark bae. However, she noticed it as soon as Virgil reared and took off.
The little creature squealed and tumbled off backwards as the skittish bae reared, and lucky for him he didn't get stepped on. He landed on his back but quickly rolled over, just in case the bae would step backwards, but by then Virgil was already a ways off. He quickly ducked down in the grass, peering over the top of it at the skittish blue bae, hoping he wasn't about to be stomped on. "Sorry, so sorry there! I couldn't help myself, I didn't mean to scare you so badly, sir. I really didn't mean it," he called to the bae hesitantly, hoping that he hadn't made any enemies from his actions.
"Oh, my goodness! Who are you?" Niz asked of the rit hiding in the grass. He certainly was a cute little thing. She paused, then peered over at Virgil. "Come back, Virgil!" She called, coaxing him back over. "It's just a little rit, I don't think he meant any harm. It's not like such a little thing as he could cause much damage, if any, to a big nequus such as yourself. Plus, he's apologized for how he acted."

...Oh. A Rit. Now he looked like an utter coward. Brilliant. Well it had been going to come out in the end, why not sooner, before he'd become attatched to this mare, than later when the loss of her esteem would hurt? "...I see," the Bae said, managing to keep the tremble from his voice but sounding like ice in trade. Tensed muscles relaxed a little and the stallion persuaded his ears to rise from their pinned position. Rather than pricking them forward however, he kept the moving about in case there were any more little surprises lurking about.
Slow steps carried the white-maned stallion closer to the pair and he eyed the small creature warily. Yes, just a Rit, quite a prettily coloured one, nothing dangerous, nothing frightening. "It's alright," he said eventually, his voice still rather flat. "I was just a bit surprised." Let them call him on that understatement if they chose. He already knew it well enough but a reminder of his cowardice probably wasn't a bad thing. Better that he should remember it, remember why he was a coward, remember that the world was dangerous than to relax too much and let something truly hostile come upon him unawares someday.

The creme mare nodded, watching Virgil curiously with her bright emerald eyes. Why did he act so strangely? Yes, the sudden pounce-attack would be startling, but surely not that frightening, at least she didn't think so. Maybe he was more afraid and nervous than others? That could be it. But why? She pondered asking him this, but decided against it, as she didn't want to upset him further. He certainly sounded upset as it was. "Are you all right, Virgil? You didn't get hurt, did you?" She asked, truly concerned about him. She didn't think he'd been hurt, only scared out of his wits. But still, it never hurt to ask.
"I didn't hurt you, did I, sir? I really only meant to give you a bit of a scare, I made sure I had my claws in 'n everything. Are you all right, though?" The rit asked, still hesitant about raising himself up so he'd be completely visible. Not that it mattered now, since they'd both seen him. He carefully, slowly, rose from a crouching position, blue eyes staying mostly on the blue bae than on the reddish mare. He kept his eyes on both of them, in case one of them tried to make sure neither would make any sort of murderous attack upon him. His bright blue eyes darted questioningly from one to the other of them. The mare was big and slender, with a sharp horn, but she didn't seem angry with him. On the contrary, she smiled at him whenever she looked his way. The blue one, on the other paw, seemed extremely nervous.. In an attempt to calm both of them down, mostly the bae, he cleared his throat and spoke again. "My name's Skittles," he offered, hoping that would do. Yes, it should.

"Virgil," the Bae said shortly, watching the little Rit as he rose up out of his crouch. Was he hurt? Was he? He wasn’t was he? Might he be? The dark-coated stallion began to run a careful inventory of himself to make sure. Two eyes, bright and clear. Two ears, alert and sharp. Nose, sucking in and blowing out air rapidly. Four legs, held steady with and effort. One stomach, mildly nauseous. No. No nothing really wrong. He was fine.
"I'm not hurt," he said eventually, twitching his tail and glancing between the two creatures before him carefully. No, no neither of them were a threat, Niz seemed nice and the Rit might well be too. Everything was fine again. He just had to be more careful, more alert. Everything was alright now; his heart was even slowing. It was fine. The Bae stallion sighed out a long rush of air and began to breath more normally.

"Oh good, I'm so glad you're fine," the mare said to the blue bae. He still seemed a bit nervous. She then turned her slender head towards the little rit, lowering it close to him to get a good sniff at him, which made the little bundle of fur jump in surprise. "Aww, you're so cute! And your name is Skittles? That's such a cute name!" She raised her head, smiling down at the little creature, then peered over at Virgil. "Doesn't he have a cute name?"
"Cute?" The rit repeated, blinking several times in confusion. No one had ever called him cute before. Was he really cute? "I didn't think anyone thought I was cute. Everyone either ignores me or tries to step on me," he said with a nod, peering up at Niz. He paused, glancing back from her to Virgil, then back to her. "..you're not going to step on me, are you..?"
"Goodness, no!" The mare said, eyebrows raised. "Why in the world would anyone want to step on such an adorable little creature like you?" She asked, peering down at him. "Either way, you can stick with me and I'll make sure no one tries to step on you," she said with a nod. She then lowered her head, carefully picked up the little rit by his scruff, then turned her head and placed him upon her back. "There!" She said with a grin. Then she turned her head, watching Virgil curiously. "Are you sure you're all right, Virgil? You seem kind of shaken still."

The dark-coated stallion watched the conversation, feeling somewhat sorry for the little Rit. People often seemed to tread on him, too. Not literally of course but the feeling was there. Scorn, disdain and violence if he didn't remove himself. But then he supposed he wasn’t exactly the most engaging of Nequus. People didn’t like to feel as though they were being scorned and, apparently, his lack of speech gave that impression.
"Mmm, I'm sure I'm fine," he said as he watched Nizhoni place the fluffy little creature on her back. "And yes, Skittles is a cute name. One I haven't heard anywhere before." How did the mare attach to people so quickly? How could she relax enough to promise companionship having spoken only a few sentences to the little thing? How was she so friendly and so kind when he was so... so... him. Virgil sighed to himself. It was unfair, but that was life.

A grin spread across the face of the little rit, grateful for having found such a mare as this. "Thank you!" He settled down on the creme-colored mare's back, making sure his claws were retracted so he wouldn't hurt her. "It's very nice of you to go 'n help me like this," he said with a smile and a flick of his tail. "I haven't heard of any other creature named Skittles either, so I think it's a pretty singular name," he said with a nod.
"Oh, my name is Nizhoni, by the way, but you can call me Niz," she said with a nod to the little rit. She'd almost forgotten her manners. She turned to Virgil again and smiled warmly at him. "Oh good, I'm glad. Would you like to go for a walk, Virgil? The weather is wonderful, and it'd be good to get a little exercise. Plus, it's a good way to soothe the nerves, in my opinion." She smiled again, watching him. She was very quick to trust others, possibly too quick. The inexperienced mare still remained unaware that not all nequus are as kind and polite as some, and some are more violent than others, in actions as well as words. How, when, and where she'd learn that lesson, however, are yet to be seen.

Yes, the little fluffy thing was lucky to have her, Virgil thought with a trace of bitterness. Not that he hadn't been extended friendship as well but... Well. He was probably just annoyed that he'd been startled like that. "A walk?" he said aloud as he mulled the idea over carefully. Well it would be nice to spend more time with Niz, and to calm down. Perhaps to start getting on with Skittles, too. "Alright then, which way are we going?" he asked of the Ichsa mare. There was no harm in a short walk at all. He could always leave if he wanted to and moving along would keep him alert for trouble, too.

Niz didn't notice Virgil's inward bitterness, too absorbed in her normal happy, enthusiastic bubble. She began walking towards him so that she could walk beside him, and flicked her curly tail. "Oh good!" She said excitedly, trotting closer to him, almost knocking Skittles off her back. "I'm so glad you agreed to come, Virgil. Let's head towards the river," she said with a joyful smile, ears perked and emerald eyes bright. It certainly was so much fun to go on walks with friends, especially good, kind ones. And so, she set off in the direction of the river, walking alongside her newest friend.
The little rit managed to hang onto his new friend's back by using her wings, which offered an ideal set of handles because of the tendrils. "Ooh, a walk!" He said excitedly, the peculiar colored tip of his tail twitching back and forth. "That sounds like lotsa fun, Niz!" He settled himself down on her back as she walk, making sure his paws were near her wings, just in case she decided to break into a trot or canter without notice, which, he figured, she was the type who did.

Virgil smiled as the other Nequus approached and pushed aside the whispering worries that she might not be all she seemed. If this one was false, if she was not truly the sweet, exuberant mare she seemed then she was the best damn actor he'd ever seen... Which was possible. Possible but not probable. So, he would be alert but he would not pull aside from her. The closeness was quite nice really, took the edge of that lonely feeling that hung over him.
"Alright then, the river," he agreed with a bob of his head, turning his eyes to watch a flick of movement. Just the Rit's tail; that was alright then. Perhaps later on he could talk to Nizhoni about her herd. Being a part of a group like that might ease his multitude of fears over time. Perhaps he'd even come to trust one or two of them, become able to relax enough to say the things he was thinking.
Bright blue eyes flicked over the potential friends at his side once more and the stallion smiled to himself. He certainly hoped that he would manage to calm around them, Niz especially. Perhaps then he'd be able to tell her about the music of her laugh, the poetry of her elegant form and the subtle drama that was in the way wind stirred at her curls. The words were all there, he knew they were, he just needed to learn to let them out.
The Bae turned his gaze forward again, tentative smile still in place. Today had turned out to be a rather good one.

Yes, today was a wonderful day. The sun was shining, the sky was light, clouds were few but those that floated lazily across the bright blue sky were white and fluffy and wonderful. The exuberant mare had met two new friends, and one who could accompany her wherever she went. And, to top it all off, they were walking together, all three, to enjoy each other's company near the river. "Good!" She exclaimed with a joyful laugh.
No, Niz couldn't act if her life depended on it. She was naturally joyful and happy, excited about the world and meeting everything in it. When this would change and when reality would set in however, remained to be seen.
She glanced over at Virgil again, noticing for the first time that his mane and tail were curly, like hers were. Very handsome, too. With another bright smile, she returned her gaze ahead of them and towards their destination. Perhaps, with time, he'd become less distrusting of others. She hoped so, it seemed so silly to be afraid of everything. At least, to her, it seemed silly. But that coming from a mare who's too innocent to fear anything, the thought doesn't amount to all that much.
