Tybalt watched Vidya work through eyes narrowed with suspicion. A grim smile was his only response to her playful wink, falling away completely to reveal an ever-growing scowl as she turned back to the lake. Every feather stood on end as a form took shape and sharp talons gripped the earth as it reared up only to crash back down into the lake, thankfully taking the shovel--the last of the evidence--with it.

"I'll keep that in mind," he replied, voice tight, and turned away from her. His wings flapped once, twice, as if he could shake the tension right out of them before they resettled, the feathers still ruffled. "This way!" he called over his shoulder as he started through the woods.

Tybalt had always been uneasy around magic; it seemed a growth spurt hadn't changed that any.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 16, 2007 8:15 pm

Vidya stared at his back as he flapped his wings once, then twice. He seemed...frustrated somehow, but really, when was he otherwise? In all honestly, she couldn't remember the last time he hadn't been frustrated with something. It was strange...but she couldn't remember him ever being happy. Ever. Not with her, not on his own (she had snuck up on him a few times in their lives~), not ever. And...when was she ever happy with him? As she stared at his back, she wrinkled up her nose in thought. It was like...feelings and memories she knew should've been there just...weren't. They'd vanished. All she could remember were the bad memories of him, the ones where he'd been angry at her or at something connected to her.

She snapped out of it when he called to her, and she instead watched him move farther and farther from her, until the outlines and the auras that made up "Tybalt' in her otherworldly vision meshed with that she assumed were the outlines and auras from the forest, and the things living in the forest.

With a panicked squeak, she hurried after him....that was until the wall of what she assumed were trees came at her. The outlines were so...so meshed together. She couldn't tell where one started or ended, or if one was farther back or up close....it was like looking at a mesh of crooked white lines on a black sheet of paper, and then trying to decide which lines belonged together and which did not.

Vidya stood there, on the edge of the line of trees, with her arms pulled close to her chest and her hands in fists, looking wise eyed and lost from one side to the next. She couldn't even tell which lines belonged to Tybalt anymore! "C-Capt'n...Come back...!" The nymph was trying to not sound lost, nor was she trying to sound lonely and confused or deperate but...hell, she WAS lost. And lonely. And Confused. And Desperate. To her eyes, Tybalt had left her. He was gone, and she was alone. Very very alone. While staring at a mass of lines that confused her thoroughly. "I don't...I don't want to go that way! Come back, please!" She tried reaching out, but stopped when her hand hit the rough bark of a tree. It was best not to move, she decided. Nor to call out that she couldn't actually see him anymore.

Navigating a safe course through the woods had once been simple--it used to be an easy thing to tuck his wings in tight to keep them from the greedy grasp of branches. Now, however, it required a bit more concentration. Any ease he might have once possessed in traversing the forest crumbled under winter's chill and the newer, larger shape of his own body. He had expected Vidya to be right behind him, especially with as slow as he was going, and turned in surprise when her voice called out, wincing as a still-sore wing hit a nearby tree. This did little to add cheer to his souring mood.

His growing frustration was somewhat stunted as he saw the almost scared look on Vidya's face. What was her problem? He hadn't gotten that far off, and even if he had managed to, his plumage hardly blended into the landscape. A quick survey of her movements left him confused; her sight had seemed fine just a moment ago, but now it seemed she couldn't see the literal forest for the trees.

Tybalt sighed quietly, negotiating himself back towards his starting point. It left him just at Vidya's side, and he clapped a hand to her shoulder. "I'm right here," he said, aiming for comforting and attaining dubious success. "What's th' matter with ye?"

Before the whole forest thing she was fine. She could hear where his voice was and direct her head to it easily, she could turn and face the water because it called out to her and not because she could see it. Vidya had since been learning to use the rest of her senses over the strange lines and auras her 'sight' granted her, as in most cases it was totally useless. But now, with the whole forest thing, it threw her 'handicap' into light. How on GAIA could she talk her way out of this one?

Startling at the sudden hand on her shoulder, Vidya gave a little squeak and drew her fists close to her chest, her head turning instantly in his general direction. Upon hearing his voice however she relaxed, turning her attention downwards with a heavy sigh. The silver eyed tale slowly shook her head from side to side, lifting a hand to touch the side of her face, which she actually achieved on the second try.

"Nothing." She said heavilly. "Its nothing..." Letting her hand drop, she lifted her head to stare at where he had been standing when he touched her shoulder. "I just don't want to go that way...is there another way around?" Clearly, she was upset. Whether it was at herself or not was the actual question.

Tybalt's fingers tightened on Vidya's shoulder as she startled, his narrowed eyes intently watching her reach for her face...and miss. "Nothing," he repeated flatly, brazen disbelief in his tone. He knew lies like breathing, and that was an obvious and poorly-delivered one. "Right." He considered being mad at her for lying, for keeping things from him, before deciding it would be pointless. Getting mad at Vidya never seemed to work for either of them.

That didn't mean he wouldn't get a straight answer regardless. Tybalt's grip on Vidya's shoulder loosened. His fingers trailed down her arm until they reached her elbow before tightening once more, this time in order to gently tug her away from the trees. "We'll go this way," he said, indicating a longer, clearer path around the lake. "Ye'll tell me what's wrong." It wasn't a request.

Yeah well....! Vidya was a horrible liar anyway. She always had been, and probably always will be. The teenager flinched visibly as Tybalt repeated her answer. Great, he was mad at her! That didn't make her feel any better at all! Sadly she turned her attention back towards the ground...and as she did, the little voice in the back of her head rampaged, echoing the thoughts of mutiny she would probably never listen to. When he grabbed her elbow instead she didn't wince or startle; she'd been expecting it. Stumbling after him, she managed to get enough of her own footing to wander after him, her free hand still curled into a fist near her chest.

"I-I..." Vidya started once he'd ordered her to tell him what was wrong. Of course it was about that time she started to panic; racing heart, stuttering voice, shaking...the whole bit. So many things could go wrong if he knew the truth! The man Miren adored had murdered her for something going wrong, after all! Not that she expected Tybalt to do the same....death was one thing, but there was the possibility she wouldn't be allowed to travel with him anymore! Or worse yet, he wouldn't want to be near her anymore! Sure her priorities were out of whack, but at least death would mean she wouldn't have to worry for too long about losing someone she cared about.

"If I do, you've got to promise not to kill me for it!" She said before she could stop it, and despite it sounding odd she was totally serious about it. "I can't see, Captain." Vidya said sadly, looking in his general direction now. "I mean, I can't see anything but sketchy lines and the odd colour..." After finding her face with her free hand, she rubbed at her eyes with the back of it. "I knew where you were when you were beside me but...but when you walked through the trees I couldn't tell you from them and I panicked! I didn't want to tell you in the first place because I didn't want you to stop being friends with me or kill me because I really care about you and I wouldn't EVER be able to not be your friend so I tried to pretend I could see like I always could but those stupid trees!" The tale blurted out, a dark purple blush on her face. How like a kid, cornered into telling the truth and doing so as fast as she could!

"I...I'm so sorry Captain..." She muttered after a moment's pause to get her breath back.

Liability, Tybalt's mind whispered as he learned the truth behind Vidya's strange behavior. Useless, it continued as he stopped walking and gently tugged Vidya to a halt with the hand still on her arm. Her words were a knife in his gut; it hurt in ways he couldn't explain to hear how callous she thought him, but, he supposed, it was hardly surprising. If it had been anyone else, he would have laughed at their predicament and left them stranded in the woods. Maybe spun them around in circles before he walked off. Anyone else...but not her, damn it all.

Tybalt sighed, turning Vidya to face him. The hand on her arm drifted upwards, stopping under her chin to tilt her head upwards. Narrowed eyes scrutinized her features--she had grown into a very pretty young woman, he admitted--before stopping at her eyes. They were dull, vacant, but not lifeless.

"Don't be daft," he chastised gently. "'S not somethin' to apologize for. Ye didn't do it to yerself, aye? Certainly not somethin' I'd kill ye for, an' I'm not quite sure what put that idea inta yer head. Ye're...more ta me'n just a pair've eyes." Weak, his mind hissed at him.

Though it was brief, just waiting for him to say something, anything in regards to what she'd blurted out about herself was painful. It seemed like an eternity! She'd stopped when he tugged her to, her head tilted up when his fingers rested under her chin, quietly letting him inspect her as he wanted to. All the while she tried to focus on something - anything - and not getting anywhere. When focusing failed, she tried to picture him...tall, feathery, and probably looking through narrowed eyes. The eternity of waiting for his answer didn't mean her mind wouldn't wander...and one of the things it wandered too was the wish to see what he looked like now that he'd grown. The other thing it wandered to was what a knife through the gut felt like when she wasn't dreaming it, and if she'd be feeling it soon.

No sharp pain came, only a chastising voice. That calmed her down more than anything. She relaxed visibly, a thin smile spreading on her lips before he really started to talk. Vidya stayed quiet until he was finished, and by the time he did she looked like she might cry at any moment.

"Aye...If I had a choice I'd choose to see properly." She agreed quietly, that happy little smile on her lips, her eyes reflecting as much of the same emotion as they could. "And thank you, that means more than the world to me..." Vidya smiled at him then, really smiled at him. See? She told herself mentally, 'speaking' to the darker part of herself. He's different! She tried to argue with herself. Lies, The darker part growled.

It was quickly brushed aside however, as one of her almost iridescent hands lifted, finding his arm by chance with a bump of her fingers. Once she knew where his arm was she gently moved them, sliding her fingers along the underside of his arm until she reached his wrist, her bluish digits moving around to gently grasp it. "But nevermind that...as long as someone can be my eyes I can get by just fine." She assured him, looking as though she were attempting to brush aside the overwhelming joy of having him proclaim it wasn't all that important.

"There was somewhere you wanted to go?" Vidya reminded him with a little smile. It was getting cold!

Vidya's obvious relief at Tybalt's reassurances made him slightly uneasy; he wasn't used to being the source of someone's happiness, but he decided it was far better to deal with Vidya's smiles rather than her tears. "Aye," he said, twisting his wrist in her grasp in order to free it, but only long enough to take her hand in his own. Just less awkward this way, he told himself. "I think ye'll like this place."

---

Twenty minutes later found the pair off the beaten path and on a much more well-traveled one. It was still achingly cold, but the friendly lights of the shops lining the streets promised warmth if only one would step inside. The town was remarkably crowded for such a frigid day, and Tybalt found steering both himself and Vidya safely through the human traffic more challenging than he had anticipated. He only bumped into someone once, coming shoulder to shoulder with someone almost harder than he was fit for in his cold and medicated state.

"Watch where you're going, jerk!" The man said.

"Me humblest apologies, mate," Tybalt replied, almost sounding like he meant it. The man walked off muttering, and Tybalt stuck the wallet he had lifted from the man's jacket into his own.

A few minutes later, Tybalt stopped Vidya in front of one of the smaller shops on the street. It was dimly lit and appeared to be more than a little rundown, but warmth and the bittersweet smells of coffee and baked sugar radiated from it. Tybalt quickly ushered Vidya inside, eager to get out of the cold. "'S a pastry shop," he explained. "They sell coffee 'n tea 'n whatnot, too. Order what ye like."

Vidya turned her head in the direction of the noisy and irritated male, just in time to witness the disappearance of the lines that were probably his form. Huh, in a hurry to yell, but in an even faster hurry to walk away again. People, seriously! After that she lifted her head a bit towards the reddish lines she'd come to associate with Tybalt, registering how nice he sounded. She gave him a quizzical look before turning her head away, laughing softly. Tybalt was only that nice to others when he was doing something he probably shouldn't have been. But thats a pirate for you, and Vidya found it funny more than anything now.

Blinking when she was stopped, she lifted her head up to the towering mass of various lines and auras; it wasn't as bad as the forest, but it was still intimidating to her. Naturally that was pushed from her mind once her nose caught the delicious aromas that radiated from the place. Aromas that got deeper once she was ushered inside and eventually to a seat. When Tybalt explained things to her, all she could do was shake her head with a little grin. She clung onto his hand, not wanting to get seperated out of fear of walking into something she shouldn't. Too much trust! The dark part of her mind hissed at her, acid dripping from the mental tone.

"It smells so good in here!" She exclaimed once they were in, thoroughly ignoring that part of her. Vidya looked around, then back in his general direction. "I smell cinnamon buns. Can I have one of those? And...Lemon tea?" The last part was a guess; he said they had teas, and lemon was a kind of tea! She could always choose something else if they didn't have it.

Once they had everything and were sitting down, Vidya unzipped her jacket and let it drape over the back of her chair, proving from earlier that she was, in fact, wearing pants. Short ones, but they were still pants. Shorts still counted as pants! Her legs weren't cold anyway! Wrapping the cold cord closer around her wrist lest it twist around or into something, she but her hands around her tea for now.

"Soo...what've you been up to? How's the ship coming?" She chatted after a few moments of silence, trying to find conversation...and the plans he'd shown her when she ran to him after her father forgot who she and the rest of her family was.

"Course ye can," Tybalt said, repeating Vidya's order to the cashier. He added his own--a sweet fruit tart and coffee--and paying with the money he'd found in the wallet he had pick-pocketed just moments before. Tybalt joined Vidya at the table after making a detour to replace a chair with a stool; tailfeathers didn't lend well to them without a little bit of awkward discomfort. As he settled on the stool, he pondered her questions.

"Not much," he replied, snagging a bowl of sugar cubes and dumping far more than were healthy in his coffee. Just killin' people, buryin' th' evidence, y'know, th' usual. "Catchin' up on things, mostly. Th' ship's...comin' along," he said after a moment's hesitation. In truth, it would have been coming along better if he had been able to find someone willing to hear him out without bursting into laughter. A pirate ship? For a parrot? Hilarious!

He hid his frown in his first tentative sip of too-hot coffee. "An' yerself?" he asked. "Been keepin' busy? Not gotten in too much trouble without me, eh?" The last was said with a wink; in all honesty, he would have been rather proud if she had.

"Thats good." Vidya hummed out, a general response to pretty much most of what Tybalt said. She felt around for her cinnamon bun, peeling off a piece with her fingers before eating it. Ooh, cinnamon buns were good! Once she finished her mouthful she chuckled a bit. "Coming along? I know you don't like to admit it, but if you need help I might be able to offer it." There was a pause where Vidya brought her tea to her lips, lightly blowing on it before gingerly taking a sip. "Well, not me personally...I doubt I'd be of any help but...My Momma and Popa know a lot of people so...they could probably tell you which direction to go in." Her gaze lifted when he asked about her, her eyes resting blankly on him.

"...Me...?" There was a pause, as she tried to figure out how to answer that question. There was so much...and a lot of it was Miren planting suggestions against him. "Decent...Not much to report I guess. I went comatose for a few days before I grew...Or so Momma says. I met the person from my past life. She was...interesting." She shrugged, peeling off a piece of her cinnamon bun while letting her voice drift off before she could talk about Miren.

"As for trouble...I'm only in trouble when you're around me." She gave him a wink of her blank eyes, laughing happily before chowing down on that piece of bun. "Haven't had the opportunity to get in trouble really. Otherwise I would've at least tried, just so you could be proud of me." Chuckling again, she lightly licked her fingers clean of the icing the bun had.

Vidya's gracious offer of her parents' help was met with a gently-shaking head. Help was never asked for even at the worst of times, and with a project as personal as this, a plea for aid was even less likely. "If I need help, ye'll be th' first ta know," he said indulgently, not meaning a word of it.

He worked on his tart as Vidya recounted her recent doings. His strawberry-laden fork froze halfway to his mouth as she said "comatose," nearly dropping from his hand completely as she went on to tell him that she met a past self. "Really, now?" he said, suddenly much more interested in the conversation than he had been. "An' how was that like? She th' one what took yer other eye?" Wary as he might be, given his own growth experience, he was intensely curious as to what Vidya's other self was like.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 13, 2007 6:04 pm

Vidya waved a hand in dismissal after hearing this rather indulgent reply. Of course it was silly for her to offer, but she had anyway. She was sure even Tybalt would need help sometime, nobody was a hunred percent self-sufficient. After all, Vidya had thought her Mother had been self-sufficient for various reasons, but even that thought came to a crashing halt after her Father had lost all of his memories. Things change, she thought, and you might need the help one day, Captain.

His sudden interest in her pre-growth coma made her heart sink. The tale hadn't expected him to take an interest in it, or at least as much of an interest in it as his voice dictated. Empty eyes lowering, Vidya let out a little sigh.

"Yes, really." She replied lamely, her fingers abandoning her cinnamon bun in favor of holding her warm cup of tea. "If my eyes are silver than yes, you could say she did." There was a little pause. "Or you could say I'm becoming her.." There was a gimance on Vidya's face, as if she didn't want it to happen but the possibility was more than there. "It was interesting, really interesting!" Vidya said honestly with a bright smile. "She was a nice water nymph right up until the end." Her smile waivered then, becoming thinner the longer her pause lasted. "And then she became a very angry person."

Her expression, distant and tragic, stayed visible for a moment or two. After those few moments her expression changed, putting up a metaphorical mask that she doubt would fool her Captain but...at least she could pretend to feel better now, to trick herself into believing it later. "What about you, Captain? Did you meet anyone else?" Her blatant change of subject was backed by a pure Vidya-esque carefree smile. She just didn't truely believe her mask yet.

The tart and coffee sat forgotten as Tybalt contemplated Vidya's less than enthusiastic response. Vidya was becoming this person who stole her sight? This..."very angry person?" He almost couldn't credit the words, it was so hard to picture Vidya angry at anyone, anything. "What made 'er so angry? Did she say?" If he knew, it might be that much easier to prevent that piece of history from repeating itself; if he couldn't stop it, he could at least be prepared. He didn't want to lose Vidya to this thing from a life long over.

The warning Smith had given him before the fiasco that preceded his growth crept, unbidden and unwelcome, through his mind: "That wench'll be yer death, Tybalt." Tybalt shook it off both mentally and physically, his wings giving an errant flick as if it would be that easy to get rid of all that was bothering him. "No," he replied. "I fell outta bed this way." That, at least, was the truth--if not for his various aches and pains and the blood-stained evidence he had gotten rid of, he might have been able to convince himself it had all just been a bad dream.
