Well the ancients are a very old race, who've dwelled unseen by man since he began. The earliest account of the ancients was in FFII, during which they were the "Lunarians." They were reported as giving man the Airship, the Tank, the firearm, and many other inventions which proved invaluable. Aeries bloodline is traced to them, as they were brought by Jenova to Earth, terrified of her and what not.
