Not the answer he was expecting, to be sure; and definitely not in that particular idea combination. The first part made him want to yelp with happiness, the second made him all but want to burst into tears himself...so he did neither. This didnt' make sense, but hadn't his father once told that somethings NEVER changed?
So he remained as he was, his wing gently resting on Hienna's cheek. "I hope this isn't too ridiculous a question...but why, exactly, is that a problem?"
He had a hunch he knew...but until they actually dealt with this issue, he'd never know when he'd have to track her down, yet again...and that could get problematic, itself.

"Because I'm not supposed to," she answered softly, sniffling again and then hiccuping, "Because I'm not supposed to need anyone else but myself, but here I am, needing you and I don't know if I'm supposed to or if I can or...or..."
Hie was rambling now and likely not making any sense.

"Not supposed to according to what your mother said, Hienna, your mother who was treated to what has to be one of the worst possible romantic fall-outs in existance. Bitterness comes from strife if we let it get to us, and she not only let it get to her, she let it get to YOU through her."
He was gently lifting her face so that their eyes were meeting, so that even in her teary state she could see how sincere he was. "Hienna, you don't HAVE to be your mother; you don't have to be bitter. It's great that you can be self-sufficient, that you can take care of yourself, that you don't 'need' anyone to be a part of your life to make it liveable. But..."
"But I need YOU as well, Hienna; I need you to laugh and my jokes even when the are horrible, I need you to poke me when I'm getting too introspective and to have conversations about the mental state of butterflies so I know it's possible to talk about more than just the weather! I need you to remind me that there's more to life than just being alone, to remind me that SOMEONE out there cares about me in a way beyond the merely sexual. I want you to be mother to the foals I father, I want you to remind our sons that girls aren't all bad and tell our daughters that true love is not just a concept but a reality...and most of all, I want you to be my mate, Hienna. From now until eternity, forever and ever."

Hienna was speechless for a long moment and...His words did get through to her. All of the doubts and the suffering she was going through with hearing her mother's voice over and over again.
"Z..Zaphiro." Her voice was soft, unsure for a moment before it grew stronger, "If you really want me, and need me...And..." She took a deep breath, pushing the rest out, "Then I will try. I may not always be sure, or strong about it, and it'll take time before I sort things out with my own ghosts but...But I'd love to be your mate, and the mother to your foals, and love you forever if you can put up with the silliness that is me listening to a dead Soquili."
She sniffled softly and blinked away tears.

In response, Zaphiro stepped forwards, wrapping his wings around Hienna and holding her close in a tight embrace. A lump had cropped up in his throat, and tears of his own were threatening to spill over; but unlike Hienna's tears, these tears were tears of happiness.
"Hienna, I adore your silliness; and I'll fight your ghost head-on if it comes down to that, or leave it apples and tea if THAT is what is needed. And I'll personally chase you down everytime your ghost gets ornery; though I might not appreciate it at the time, we'll keep at it until things work out. But hopefully I don't have to chase you down; everytime, anytime, for any reason, I'm here for you. When you're upset, I want to know; if there's anything I can do to make you happy, I want to try. Because really, Hienna, you are more important to me than anyone else could possibly ever be, and I'll love you with all my heart even beyond the day I die."

It was all too much at once but for the first time Hienna didn't find herself wanting to run from it. He was there, wings wrapped around her, and letting her not only hear the love in his voice but feel it with every heart beat and touch.
"I love you, Zaphiro," she repeated quietly, nosing at him gently and not bothering to hold back the tears any longer. It was sappy and all the things she had been taught to hate but for that moment she just didn't care. All that mattered was that Zaphiro loved her and wouldn't turn away because she couldn't let go of the past.
"I'll love you forever but somehow I do not think it's long enough."

Closing his eyes, Zaphiro buried his muzzle in Hienna's mane, his own tears whicked away by the silky strands. This moment was so beautiful, so perfect; she was here, she loved him, and she was his. Why try to analyze the issue beyond that?
"Love doesn't need a bookend, Hie; all it needs is a path. And what we have, here and now, is all the path it could ever need."

The mare was absolutely speechless and simply closed her eyes, leaning against him silently. What more was there to say? She had overcome the one thing she never thought she would, even if it was just for the moment, and she was feeling things she never felt before.
This was enough. Hienna was loved and she had a feeling it was for the first time in her life. She wasn't letting it go for the world.

Time seemed to stand still for the couple as they stood there, simply basking in the warmth and love of their new accord. HOnestly, Zaphiro wasn't sure how much time passed before he finally lifted his head and looked at Hienna, eyes shining.
"Well, my beloved mate, what do you suppose we should do now?"
Standing in a random part of the forest was nice and all, but there were probably better uses of their time. Like figuring out where they were going to live, on the practical side, or finding some breakfast, or...well, just other stuff.

She opened her eyes and looked into his with a small smile, "Mate...I like that. Hm...What to do." A long pause as she looked around the forest and a playful side of her emerged - after all, she had nothing to lose now right? "I'll race you to the beach again! We can figure out where to go from there. Better than the forest. On your marks, get set...."
She took off running a few minutes before she shouted go, her body gleaming in the bright afternoon sun that managed to make a way through the many trees.

A wide grin crossed Zaphiro's face as he watched Hienna go racing off; it was as though he'd always be doomed to merely following in her footsteps, chasing her across hell and half the forest! But then again, there was a lot to be said about being able to follow such lovely footsteps.
So it was a few more moments before he took off after her, his larger body a greater disability in weaving through the tree trunks. "Cheater! You little minx, you didn't even give me warning!"
But if SHE didn't have to play by the rules...
His grin widening, Zaph charged towards one of the beams of sunlight that indicated a break in the trees; the second he hit it, his wings were out and he was swooping upwards, out through the canopy and into the bright morning sky. A quick glance around to get his bearings, then he was flying as fast as he could over the trees, aiming at the beach.

"Hey! You can't do that!" She called as she looked back and saw him break through the trees. Wasn't a good idea to do that - she almost ran smack dab into another tree and steered clear just by pure luck. Pushing in an extra burst of speed the mare tried her best to dodge through the trees and beat him.
Of course she would fail but Hienna couldn't say she didn't TRY! As soon as the trees broke into the coast she tumbled out and collapsed in a panting heap.
"Note to self," she murmured softly, "Never race against something with wings."

"Or if you do, either etablish a no-flight rule to begin with, or don't cheat yourself!" Laughing, Zaphiro trotted up the beach to the place where Hienna had collapsed, his eyes dancing merrily. And why not? Looking at him, it would be nearly impossible to tell that he'd just beein in a race; not so much as a drop of sweat existed anywhere on his hide, and his breathing was even. Perhaps the slightly windblown look to his heair was a giveaway, but beyond that...
"But this time, I'd say the laurels go to me; and about time, might I add!"

She looked up at him with a faux look of disapproval before laughing and flopping over tiredly, laying in the sand on her side and looking at him with those soulful golden eyes of hers that purely said 'pity me'.
"Yes, you win, good for you. I'm thirsty." She laughed again and let her eyes close to block out the bright sunlight.

Though he attempted to adopt a suitably sorrowful and pitying expression at her antics, Zaphiro could only smile. And why not, when she was being such a tease?
Poking at her with a foot, he gave her a laugh. "Well, the sand isn't going to suddenly offer up a drink for you; and I don't recommend you try drinking the ocean water. So if it's a drink you want, we've got some walking to do, m'dear"
Though honestly, whatever she wanted to do he was fine with; even if she just wanted to lie there for the rest of the day, he was fine.
He was such a lovesick thing, alright!
