It's from a common few things:
1) Under-appreciation
The person probably feels embarrassed by themselves, and feels that any shot at greatness they find they should shoot for, and if they miss, they figure they're as low as they can get.
2) Boredom
It's actually not boredom, it's just depression thats making you virtually uninterested in anything. They think its boredom, so they think being constantly being entertained may make them more 'fun'... It rarely does.
3) Need for Attention
Being so under-appreciated, they feel the want for the spotlight. For some people, they need attention, they get it however they can, whether it's confusing people, being rude, or over reacting, they find a way to express it.
EDIT:
I asked a person recently of why they asked to be in a comic, if they had. They responded with:
"I think it'd be cool for people to see you and go, hey, you're that dude from the comic! I guess,"

well i believe in the fame part...but you wanna now something about me.....if i wanted to be put in an avi...comic i wouldn't want it for fame cause i already have to deal with a lot of pm's from guilds i help...and friends.....and stuff...but i would just love seeing my avi get torn to piece's or something ....for the enjoyment of seeing something i work on just destroyed...but not for real....but what i agree with is that people want to be famous...and well its just pointless it just mean's you are a lonely person who wants a lot of attention...i dont get it...maby you have bad child hoods parents not looking after you like your friends parents...reperation for not getting that stuffed animal at 3 i just dont under stand...thats why we have actors like kiana reeve's and stuff..... stare "OH GOD IM BLIND BUT SINCEIM PART MATRIX I CAN SEE 0'S AND 1'S AND STRAGTICALLY PLACE THEM TO SEE 2D IMAGE'S THAT POP OUT INTO 3D FOR NO REASON SO I CAN KICK BUT.".....YA I JUST DONT UNDER STAND SOMETHING'S...OF STRIVING TO BE NOTICED.........me i get enough of it from random friend requests from people who like to see what i say...than i mail them cause im nice to every one i have on my list and they ask "WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?" ....ya i jus tdont get it.....

Because they think that getting into the comic will make them popular around Gaia. Bah. High chance it won't change the way people think of you, and you'll probably only be there for one comic strip.
There is a side effect to being able to finally be in it though. You will get many pms about if there's a way to get in the comic and how, asking if the person being pmed could convice DB to getting the pmer in there, and fanmail cluttering the inbox and blocking important pms.
I believe I made myself clear have I not? I think I was talking to much myself. This is my opinion anyways.

Well, I'd say I'm one who has wanted to cameo in DB's strip, and my reason is simple. I'd get a kick out of it. It's quite simply, for fun. I dont care about what others think, or if they even think about it at all. Although, I'd never make the mistake of actually asking to be in the comic. Do I feel like being hated? No. Maybe some people do, but I'm not them. So please don't generalise.

You all need to seriously chill out, answers like "cause they r stupid and gay, or because they are losers." Are not the reason people want to be in the comic, no thats kinda like calling DB gay, stupid, and a loser seeing as how he's in the comic, and he wouldent be unless he wanted to be, he could have easily have put a made up character in for his part instead if he wanted. People want to be in the comics for various reasons, but I highly doubt them being a stupid, or gay is one of them.
