It's true Walt Disney was a racist, but I believe he's buried, not frozen.

Im not really that happy about it. I mean I agree that they could have done this earlier. I would have really liked it more if she was a "classic" disney princess.

I was looking at wikipedia for a research paper on african american influence on fairy tales and I came across this and I just had to share it

because this is a very big first in a predominantly european/eurocentric place: disney

The first disney princess to be black

Yeah, I've read about that. I'm not that excited. First of all the fairy is the Frog Prince - which a European story. The movie is set in Orleans, USA. Why not take an African tale instead of a European one, there's many, many African stories to choose from - were they just lazy? And why in America? Yes, there's a history of blacks in America but there's also a long history of Chinese people in America and the Carribean but Mulan was set in China. It's like saying that there isn't really a difference among blacks. I'll still see it but I don't think I'll like it.

that's irked me for a while. Africa has such a rich culture, why the heck does no one utilize it? We all can guess the answer to that one.

This movie seems like such a token. Why couldn't it be made sooner, so it could be a classic Disney film? And why do all the other Disney girls (except Kita in Atlantis) get men that look like them but the black princess has to go with a white man? Not only is it just contradictory but it also says something about black men. What, so a black man can't be a prince? As far as I'm concerned this movie is nothing more than saying "There you've got you black princess now shut up."

Don't forget Pocahontas and John Smith, though. xp
Anywho, I'm not excited about the story either. Why "The Frog Prince?" Why not some lesser known fairy tale, or, like some of you have said, an African tale???

I need to go do some research on this myself. 3nodding

EDIT: I still haven't done any research, but perhaps they are trying to teach a modern-day lesson on tolerance by having a Black American "princess" in New Orleans fall for a white guy.

Anyone know the time period this is supposed to be set in?

We've had alot of influence, just consider my brotha Aesop. An Ethopian slave responsible for alot of the animal folk lore.

Yeah...

Theres no African tale because Walt Disney is racist, and they have to keep the spirit of the great father of the evil mouse. 3nodding

Just my guess. Disney is an evil corporation. They kidnap small children at their amusement parks. neutral

Also, there's a couple nice pics of her on Deviant Art. Done by some other people. smile

Okay, I don't get it. The setting is in New Orleans, 1920, but the girl is on a castle like balcony in an amazingly modern dress? Is she going to be a servent or something, because that is extremely unlikely to achive for a black women in deep south 1920's.

Oh and 'Happily Ever After: Fairytales for Every Child' made a lot of remakes for black children in 1995. I still love them and I'm 14.

I liked "Happily Ever After..." for a long time. I liked that they weren't just "black Cinderella" or "Latina Sleeping Beauty" stories; they actually added in some parts of African, Spanish, and Chinese culture, and used voice actors from those nationalities, too. Many of the tales seemed well-thought-out for the most part, and they were very enjoyable. 3nodding

Yeah they were (are) really good. I just figured out that they are still being shown on HBO. I think some are new or maybe they're just ones I haven't seen yet.

But how many middle eastern people were in New Orleans in the 1920s?
