My little guy Pride is a pony... 14.2 hands! But other than him, I really haven't ridden many ponies outside of pony rides at fairs when I was younger. I was always on horses... sometimes I miss their height, but Pride's full of spunk! He likes to do things like slip out of his halter or under his stall guard and trot around to make me chase him. biggrin

My first equine was a Wlesh Mountain Pony named Joey.
I don't have a picture of him with me, but he looked a lot like this one:

He was an interesting little pony, with an amazingly thick neck, with a beautiful arch, and at 17 years old, twice the amount of fire and spirit of my friends 8 yo Section A Welsh show pony.
He once even faked being lame.

I LOVE riding ponies!! For almost a year now i've been riding a lot of green horses/ponies. Green ponies are sooo much fun to ride!! I used to ride this green little bay welsh mare, and she had such an attitude. She's not green anymore, but she can still be a little bronc when she's fresh XD The othger little green pony i rode a few months back (before he sold sad ) would crow hop when he was really fresh. i know it was a bad habit, and i did get mad at him when he did that, but it was still kinda fun XD I took him in his first show, and he sold a few days later sad

Lately i've been riding this 13.2hh 5 year old Palomino Welsh cross mare (not in lessons, just on my own time) and she's amazing. she is soooo comfortable to ride. I jumped her over a 2'9" vertical and a 3' oxer the other day, and she cleared it easily. With more mileage that pony has the ability to be an "A" class hunter. It was so much fun, i hadn't jumped that high for a long time (since i've been riding green ponies/horses for almost a year now. I love riding green ponies/horses, but it's nice to ride a school pony every once in a while)

I definitely get along with ponies better, must be the small size mindset. xd

There was one POA that I did a lot of hunting on, I love him to pieces but of all the issues I've had, he's hurt me the worst (though I laugh about it now.) He hated being caught in the pasture so one day he spun around and nailed by to the inside of my hip joint. For a while they thought I might have had internal bleeding. Later that summer he threw me over the jump and I landed face first on a mounting block- had to get 12 stitches right before my freshmen band camp. Although it has always been commented on that under saddle, I'm the only one he'll rate for. Though that might have something to do I usually have 6 years and 20 lbs on any other rider.

At that same barn they always put me one the spazzy greenies. There was one mare- 1/2 QH 1/2 Arab, her owner couldn't ride for anything and when ever I backed her she couldn't go in a straight line. Our lessons usually consisted on just trying to not run in a million directions at once. Once I got her settled they moved away. Very cute little mare would have been great once she got a little more confidence- she was terrified of the jumps at first but right before she moved we got her over a coop.

There was an ex-racehorse Arab, couldn't be more than 13.2. When he decided he didn't want to listen he didn't. My last lesson him was spent bucking and galloping around a single standard. Last I heard he was back on the market.

I just love those ponies. One day I decided I'll own at least three: a Fell, a POA, and a Shetland. Maybe I"m asking for it but I think they're fun.

I rarely end up working with ponies for long periods of time, I usually end up on the giants. I suppose I like the feeling of being able to control something so much bigger than me. And I think people like laughing at how little I look up on the 17+hh horses.

But I used to ride a lot of ponies. Never mine, usually owned by the kids in pony club. You know the ones. The kid begs for a pony, mom and dad give in and go buy a pony. Pony is hardly green broke, but it's a pony, therefore a kids horse right? Well, the problem with pony, is it's too small for most adults to get on and school. Except me. At 5'1 I'm the perfect pony size, and when I was doing this all the time I was barely 120 lbs. (I'm not anymore... *cough* thank you college...) So I became the official Pony Beater. It was a great job. I had a lot of fun pushing the ponies around because they're a lot easier in that way than the big horses. Of course, I would work on things like softness and responsiveness once I got their attention. But usually the first few minutes of being on them was "Hey, I'm not some little kid that doesn't know what they're doing. You're going to listen to me now".

That is my greatest pet peeve of all time.
I'm currently planning a book about classical horsemanship for children, and in it I'm planning a nice long letter to parents about why they should not buy an equine for their children. Horses are just too complex. There shouldn't have to be 'pony beaters' in this world, just kid beaters. xd

HEHE! Let me tell you, remembering that I'm not a kid beater (or parent beater rolleyes ) can be... difficult, at times. Sometimes they really deserve it.

One of the things that we try to impress upon parents when they come to us to talk about getting their kid a pony is to NOT get them a pony. Get them a horse. Something about 14-15 hands is perfect. Yeah, you might have to help them get the saddle on, but you should be out at the barn with your kid anyway. Ponies get a bad rap because the majority of them are never actually trained. People just assume that because it's little it'll be a good kids horse, slap a saddle and bridle on it, and toss little Jimmy up there. No wonder the pony won't move. You never taught it that it was supposed to.

ARGH! We had sooo many of those at my old barn. One pony in particular stands in mind (the straight arab I mentioned earlier). Cute as a button used in pony club and then the dad (who of course knows more than our trainer who does the rolex). Well this girl obese to put it nicely. I mean they stuck a girl a little heavier then I on him an his back sagged (this is after the girl was too terrified to ride her own pony). Well once they started having me backing him he started to get a little saner and then the Dad pulled the girl and pony from the barn because they were telling him that they shouldn't be riding him and he thought he knew better. I think I saw him up for sale again, but there are so many bay Arabs in the area its hard to tell.

When I was younger- and still delusional about how much hay cost- I wanted to own a farm for broken ponies. Kind of like a statue of liberty for them. Most of them aren't really broken just confused and frustrated (as shown by the before mentioned Arab's hissy fit).

I'm told I ride ponies better than I ride horses. >:/
I used to ride a friends pony named Scout, he knew he couldnt buck me off so he tried to rub me off. I only rode him bareback. One day he convinced him self he was going to get me off. He took off with me and and whipped around the flag pole in the middle of yard. He didn't get me off but it was preety intresting to see him try. Apprarently I was the only person who could make him do anything. I hacked some ladys pony at a show a week ago. She was sooooooo cute. I love riding small ponies

Believe it or not i've gotten my tall & thin as a stick frame onto about 5 ponies. All of them were fun to ride , but I can't go from my 17.3 hand horse to a 14.1 hand pony. But i will only break ponies ,not horses (not yet anyway). But my current horse is the largest horse i'll over own. my first horse (pony actully ) i loved that little pony.
