the isle of the dead Harvested Sorrow the isle of the dead Harvested Sorrow I really should add a quick description between each band with some album reccomendations. Could you describe Lamb for me? If I was to put them into a genre, I would call it 'electronica', in the same way that Bjork is. Lamb have a very beautiful, warm feel about them, which is why I suppose so many artists I know like them. Ah, okay. I'm not into electronica, myself. I need to hear real instruments playing...or at least synthesized versions of real instruments. sweatdrop Oh, they are real instruments, pianos, bongos, guitars, basses, strings etc. I just has that elecronica air about it. Like I said, in a Bjork vain. [I edited your post the first time. It might take a while to realise when I do that.] Feel free to edit the band listing post to add your band into there with info, just credit yourself. xp And now I understand what you meant; that does sound interesting. I haven't heard Bjork so that previous comment did nothing for me, sorry.

katealaurel Lately I've been going through a phase with a band called Nightwish. It's metal, I suppose, but it has a very musical quality to it, and not nearly as much screaming as I would normally expect of a metal band. I'd recommend "Over The Hills and Far Away" as a first song to listen to, though it doesn't expose the group's lyrical qualities as well as some of their other songs. What do you mean but? All good metal has a very "musical" quality to it. If you would expect screaming....eh, you need to be educated on metal. I'm assuming most "metal" bands you've heard are stuff like Korn and Slipknot? Because that's...not metal.

Alright, I'll confess- I know very little about the actual classifications of rock music. I classified Nightwish as metal, but I mentally associate metal with screaming and banging, even though, to be honest, I've never heard much of it- including either of the bands you've mentioned (in fact, I don't even think I'd heard -of- them before this. I lead a sheltered life.).

If you haven't heard of them...good. Those are bands that aren't metal but commonly get labeled as such, and many people stereotype metal as s**t based on them. Yes, Nightwish is a metal band, that's correct. I just was arguing against your perception of metal: It's ignorant to be honest, as that's NOT what metal is about. However, it's fine, people make mistakes.

How about Radiohead? Their music is brilliant, and Christopher O'Riley has transcribed a whole bunch of their work for classical piano.

Quote: it's ignorant to be honest ..no need to be rude about it. I really hadn't been exposed to much except classical, folk, and broadway until only a few years ago, and just started listening to wider varieties of rock in the last few months. Thank you for the clarification, though. As per Radiohead, some of their music is quite complex rhythmically- Pyramid Song has me stumped.

Yes, Radiohead is quite complex in almost every aspect. Have you heard the intro to Airbag? It's nonmetrical. They blend instruments so adeptly it's amazing. I haven't heard Pyramid Song -- Which album is that on? I only own OK computer and Hail to the Theif. I'm listening to Paranoid Android from OK Computer right now, in fact.

Nightwish < Lacuna Coil.
Radiohead are a fantastic band, though I found their earlier music more interesting. I have the album with pyramid song on it, I don't like it. Kind of like Glass with synths.

Ignorant means lacking in knowlege, not being stupid or anything like that. Sorry if I came across as harsh....I'm not exactly the most eloquent speaker, and couldn't come up with another term off the top of my head that sounded nicer.

Oh, Radiohead... mmm...
OK Computer is a marvellous album. I'm into "negative utopia" themes in the first place, but there are just some awesome instrumental things going on there.
I had a friend listen to "Karma Police" the other day, and he was like, "This must be a good song if I can listen to the first ten seconds and love it."
I'm glad there are bands out there to prove that you don't need to be conventional or have catchy hooks to be appreciated by the general public.

The stuff I listed has plenty of that going on. (the last thing you said) I have to resort to putting the ******** albums on MP3 here I will. xp
And yes...I just heard Radiohead for the first time yesterday, so not everything has had time to sink in yet, but it was pretty good.

I agree with you about liking "negative utopia" ideas, too. Karma Police was the first song I liked on that album, because it sounded the most "acoustic" if you will - the least amount of electronics, and I hadn't really listened to anything but classical before got into Radiohead. The ironic thing, though (or maybe it's just sad) is that I got interested in my favorite "popular" band (as opposed to classical) through classical music -- through Christopher O'Riley's classical transcriptions of them for piano. Shows how much I pay attention to popular culture. I actually do now, but I didn't then.
