Nodding sagely at Wambli's words, Safi made a tsking noise in his throat. "I thought as much; this child of mine is as wayward a youth as one could ever dream of encountering; likely if you hadn't found her she would have run clean across the world and I'd be left scratching my head in dismay!"

Saiena had been listening to her father with a wide-eyed expression of alarm, but as he spoke her eyes had narrowed and she'd gradually adopted a suspicious expression; by the time he finished, she was all but bursting at the seams.

"Papa, you're lying! You shouldn't tease when people might not know you ARE teasing! Wambli migth think you're mad at her, and you're not!" Turning, she shook her head vigorously at the mare, a nervous and contrite expression now in place. "He might SOUND mad, but he's really not. He's just teasing, cause he likes to tease."

Safi's mouth was twitching at the effort to not burst out laughing; it was always so amusing to see his daughter's little outbursts, sincere as they were. But he did so enjoy a chance to tease her, and the black mare was being most accomodating in that respect. So it was with a suitably contrite expression that he lowered his head, sweeping Wambli a bow. "You're right of course, Button; I wouldn't want to confuse your friend with my...unexplained intentions. I assure you, Ma'am, I was only teasing."

As he rose up, Safi gave the mare a conspiratorial smile; if Saiena didn't figure it out, he wouldn't shatter her illusions. "And I'm also, as she mentioned, Safi; her father, otherwise known as Abused One of the Most High Order. My thanks for keeping my daughter in one place long enough for me to get ahold of her again!"

And then he allowed himself to laugh. After all, there was a lot of humor in losing track of one's own child...as long as you found them again! "I hope she wasn't too much of a trial for you."

The laughter of the stallion was echoed by Wambli. How refreshing to talk of family and simple joys!

"Not at all, I enjoy spending time with the young ones. Now that my daughters and grandchildren are all grown it is good to find another foal willing to indulge an old mare in a game or two."

"And as for you, young lass," she looked at the filly with a mock somber glare of her own, "There are dangers out here - even this close to the twofoot village. My human killed a snake just the other day that was threatening some human children and there are larger predators about as well - and the kalona!"

Well, this wasn't making any sense at all! Frowning, Saiena glanced from Wambli to her father, realizing that there had been a joke somewhere and she had totally missed it. Even worse was the lecture that followed, not only from her father but also from Wambli! What had happened to fun???

Pouting out her lower lip slightly, Saiena made a face at both adults. "I am NOT a baby, y'know. I know to keep away from kalona an' snakes an' wolves an' all sorts of bad stuff! You don' have to TELL me that!"

The rather exasperated statement was punctuated by a dramatic roll of Saiena's eyes, meritting her an actual stern look from Safi. "You know why we have rules, Saiena; if you're going to get lippy, then we can always just go home. Do you really want that when you've just made a new friend?

Knowing one's audience was always important, and in this case it got the desired results. Saiena's eyes widened in shock, and she was almost immeadiately outraged, shocked, and contrite all at once. "NOOOOOO! That would be so mean, Papa; you heard Wambli, she LIKES me! That means it would be mean to her if you took me home!" Truly brilliant child logic at it's finest. "You heard her, she doesn't have foals anymore, right Wambli? Cause your kids and grandkids are all grown, and-" Then she broke off, staring at Wambli in awe. "Even your GRANDkids are grown? You must be REALLY old!"

Not the answer Safi was expecting, as his choke of surprise clearly indicated. He often made comments about age relative to himself and being decrepit, but he had no idea how sensitive this mare was. Saiena, you need to learn when things are appropriate topics of conversation!!!

Wambli swished her tail in amusement at the filly's surprise. She lowered her head down to Saiena's level and looked straight at her.

"Yes, I am older than you thought. In fact, I am one of the elders here. And I got that way because I was careful and listened to those with more wisdom than I have. Now it is my turn to share wisdom with others." She lifted her head and danced a few steps away, rustling her wings a little.

"That's not to say I don't know how to have fun, though! Fun is what keeps the soul young, even when the body is growing older! Perhaps you can think of a game all three of us could play?"

((sorry for the long delay... had a rather rough week))

Saiena frowned slightly as she listened to the mare's words; she wasn't exactly sure what an elder was, nor what 'wisdom' was, exactly. They sounded kinda solemn and unfun, honestly; not like something she'd want to be herself. At least, she didn't THINK she'd want to be something like that...well, maybe, when she was older, if it was fun. Though her Papa was old too, and he never said anything about being an elder. Or maybe he just never mentioned it to her? Or maybe you had to be a girl to be an elder...it was a mystery, alright.

The important part was that Wambli wanted to play. And better yet, she wanted to play a game that they could all play! Eyes alight with anticipation, Saiena immeadiatly began to caper about the two adults, her foalish energey high.

"Ooh, we could play tag! Or hide and seek...or we could run a race, or we could play Kalona and the Unicorns, or we could do lots of stuff!" Yes, the possibilities were endless!

Safi couldn't help himself; Saiena was very much like a dragonfly sometimes, flitting from one emotion and activity to the next at the drop of a hat. It was absolutely adorable, and whenever she started acting in that goofy and energetic manner of hers he couldn't help but laugh. At this rate, they'd spend their game time CHOOSING a game!

Wambli shook her head in amusement.

"Any of those sound fine to me. And if you like unicorns I will have to introduce you to the rest of my family sometime. My mate & grandaughter are both unicorns!"

She turned to Safi. "This is, of course, up to your father, Saeina. I don't want to interrupt any other plans he may have had for you two."

"Oh, really? We have a unicorn in our herd, too; she's kinda like my babysitter, but she's REALLY boring when she's watching me; something about teachin' me 'respect' or somethin' like that. But she's not a relative, so maybe that's why she isn't fun? And let's play hide and seek!"

As with every other statement Saiena made, that little diatribe was delivered in rapid fire, bearly pausing for breath. And why would she, when breath only took time away from fun?

Nonplussed, Safi looked over at Wambli with a smile. "Thanks for your concern, but we don't have any plans beyond enjoying the day. A game would be delightful, and totally in keeping with the plan of attack for the day."

"Well then, hide and seek it is! Since I hid last I think it is only fair that you hide this time, Saiena. Promise not to look!"

Wambli extended one of her wings and made a great show of covering her head with it by tucking her neck around as well. Her voice was a little muffled by the soft feathers but she was still understandable.

"You better pick a good place! I bet your father is just as good a finder as you are and I know I am!"

For a second, Saiena stared at Wambli; then her eyes widened into two huge round orbs, and she instantly went dashing off into the grass. "You can try, Wambli, but I bet I'm a better hider'n you are a finder!"

Quick to seize the opportunity while it was still around, Safi cupped a mouth around his mouth and called after his daughter, "DON'T GO TOO FAR!" Upon hearing a muffled "Yes, Papa" from off in the distance, he lowered his wing and chuckled at Wambli. "Nice to know I still have a little bit of authority over the brat." However, his tone was affectionate, and it was easy to tell that though he might call his daughter a brat, his feelings were actually far from it. Right now, though, there was hiding to do. "Happy hunting!"

And then he too was making his way off through the grass.

Chuckling to herself, Wambli obediently counted off the time by singing through one of her favorite songs twice. When she was done she lifted her head and called out "I hope you are ready - here I come!"

Now, which way would they have gone? She listened carefully but the soft winds through the grass didn't give her any help. Wait... she turned into the wind and breathed deeply. Was that a familiar scent upwind?

"Gotcha now!" she said with a laugh as she headed in that direction.

((My apologies on how long this reply took >>))

In her snug little grass hiding place, Saiena was doing her best to blend in; not exactly an easy task when one was bright blue and purple and attempting to hide among green grass. But she had burrowed down pretty far amidst the tall grasses, and was reasonably confident that her amazing finding abilities would translate into equally amazing hiding abilities. After all, both were connected, right?

However, she was a little bit leery when she heard the sound of footsteps moving her way through the grass. Wambli was probably just being lucky, but one could never be too sure!

Deliberately stepping heavily, Wambli headed into the wind. The breeze was cool against her skin, and she lifted her wings just a little to let it flow under them onto her flanks.

"I'm gonna get you, little one!" she softly called. She wanted to make sure Saiena knew she was coming - it wouldn't do to scare her after all!

((that's ok, I was about to change that last post to a wrap-up LOL))

Almost in reflex, Saiena called out a mocking "Nu-uh" at the mare's warning; of course, no sooner had she said so than she realized she'd just given her position away. Darn, that wasn't the way it happened in this game, you were supposed to be found cause the finder was good at finding, not cause you forgot and talked! >>

Wambli laughed at the sound of the indignant reply. She walked over to the hiding spot and tickled the filly with her wing.

"I do believe I did!" she said as she looked down at her. "But... your father is still out here somewhere. Shall we work together and find him?" she concluded with a wink.

Saiena attempted to look truly put out upon being found, but couldn't help but squeal at the tickling. "Well, you CHEATED, so that's not the same as natural finding at all, nope...but I bet you can manage non-cheating finding with my help!"

Grinning, the filly bounced up to her feet, capering about the mare in engergetic circles. "And then we'll be like a finder team! Come on, Wambli, let's go get him!"

Then, grinning, the filly was skittering off through the grass. They'd find him, oh yes they would!
