Changes

As the full moon approached, I kept staying awake during the night, to watch the feather.
It seemed to me it was growing bigger, heavier than before, but maybe it was just my immagination. I was nervous, and kept thinking...
"What if he doesn't grow? And what if he doesn't like me?"
I had accepted to take care of Carl in a second, and now at times I regretted it and wished I never took Carl.
Sometimes on the other hand I looked at it... him... and smiled. During those periods I felt happy, knowing that everything was going to be all right and we'd get along well.
Then, after a particularly long trip, we reached the seaside and the last week of our holiday. I was feeling weary, but it was full moon and I didn't want to go to bed, feeling that Carl might grow any moment now.
I opened the window and placed the feather on the window sill, then sat on a small rocky chair next to him.
I stifled a yawn and prepared for another sleepless night.
Hour after hour I sat watching the feather until I started nodding.
It was a couple of hours before dawn when I woke up with a start. I had fallen asleep despite of my efforts. I checked my watch and was about to go to bed when I saw Carl.
He was sitting on the window sill and dangling his legs while looking around.
His face was slightly tanned, and he had a strange symbol on his left cheek. His hair was blonde, and his eyes grey. His (very short) wings had the colour of apricots.
"Hi!" he said after a while. "Who are you?"
"I'm Aiko," I replied. "Your guardian."
"Hi Aiko. My name's Carl!"
"I know." I smiled. "It was about time you turned into a boy... I was getting tired."
He jumped out of the sill and started looking around, in the wardrobe and under the bed.
"This place is weird!" he exclaimed. "And a bit small," he added, disappointed.
"It's not my house, it's just a hotel room," I explained. "At the moment I'm on holiday, but I couldn't leave you at home, could I? You've got a room of your own at home... and a sister-in-law too."
His face fell. "A girl?" he asked, depressed.
"She's very nice, you'll like her," I assured him, and now I had something else to worry about. Well, not now. Maybe the following morning.
"You can sleep on the bed, I'll stay on the armchair."
"Good night... How should I call you?"
"Aiko. Just Aiko."
"Ok then. 'Night Aiko."

Coming back home

"Here we are," I announced, opening the door of my flat. "Gwena! We're home!" I cried.
"Aiko!" she exclaimed, popping out of her room. "Welcome back," she said hugging me.
"Hi Gwena. This is Carl. Carl, she's Gwena," I said, introducing them.
"Hi!" exclaimed Gwena smiling, but Carl just grunted and muttered "'lo..."
I waited a bit, but they just stood looking at each other. My smile had become rather fixed, so I shaked myself and gave Gwena a small lumpy package.
"Gwena, I got you a present..."
She opened it and looked at the plushies inside.

"Oh, cute! Thank you! They're so soft! I'll call the panda Mr Bamboo, and the sheep Nellie..."
"Now you can play together with the vampire plushie... Carl, have you given him a name yet?"
"No," said Carl, sulking. "Where's my room?"
"Second door on the left..."
He took his things and disappeared inside.
"He doesn't seem very nice, does he?" said Gwena before going back to her room and closing the door behind her.
I sighed and sat on the floor.
"Well, it could have been worse," I muttered to myself. "But not a lot worse..."

Something

Aiko says now I should write in the diary myself.
I don't like writing very much, it's sooo boring, but Aiko insisted so I had to promise I'd write a page or two.
She's not too bad (Aiko I mean), but Gwena, my "sister" is boring... She's always in her room playing with her toys, or painting. She never talks to me, so I'm stuck with talking to Aiko.
She's nice enough, but she can't cook at all. Last night she burned the eggs, so she had to phone and get a pizza. It was a good pizza.

Aiko just came in and read over my shoulder. She said to write sensible things, not random rants.
I told her that she's ranting too, and she didn't like it. Anyway she told me to write, so I write what I want to. It's not my fault if I never do anything interesting...
Last day we went to the park together and there were other children, but I didn't talk to them. Maybe next time.

Lost

Dear diary, or whatever I'm supposed to say as an introduction...
Today I got lost in a forest.
It was the best thing that happened to me since I've come home...
We were having breakfast in the kitchen when Aiko said she'd had enough of staying indoor working, and she had taken a day off to go for a walk in the forest.
I didn't want to go, because it sounded sooo boring, but she insisted and in the end I gave up.
The forest is all green and silent, and in the beginning everything was actually boring.
Aiko was walking aimlessly looking at the sky, and Gwena kept imitating the bird's voices. I wanted to laugh at her, but didn't want to spoil Aiko's good mood, so I didn't.
Then I thought I'd get out of the path to see if there was any wolf around, just to brighten the day a bit. I thought Aiko wouldn't have let me go, but shewas walking in front of me, and Gwena was looking at some flowers, so they didn't notice me going.
I walked around a bit by myself, then found a small river and started following it. I went veeery deep into the forest, but didn't find any wolf.
I started going back, but maybe I picked the wrong river because I couldn't get back to the track.
I called aloud but got no answer. I was starting to get worried (but just a bit), when Gwena appeared right in front of me. She walked me out of the forest, and said the birds told her where to go, or something like that.
Aiko was a but angry when she spotted me, but she just shook her head and told me never to do it again.
Overall it was a good day, and even getting lost was really exciting. I want to get back in that forest as soon as possible!

Recap

Well, things are going better than I thought it possible!
Ok, Carl and Gwena still don't get along too well, but I think things improved a lot since she found him in the forest
I'm still blaming myself for letting him wander alone - what if we couldn't find him? what if he fell into the river? - but luckily everything turned out well.
Sometimes I'm afraid I'm not a good guardian, but he looks happy and that's all I care about.
It's been nearly a month since Carl became a child, and he's grown so much... It's going to be full moon again in 15 days, I wonder if he'll grow again. Gwena, on the other hand, hasn't changed at all. I haven't talked with her yet, but sooner or later I'll have to.

A day out

Aiko parked the car under a big oak tree and turned to face Carl and Gwena.
"Well, here we are," she said.
The children didn't reply. Carl crossed his arms and looked out of the window.
"You're not coming?" asked Aiko stepping out of the small car.
"I didn't want to come in the first place," said Carl, turning the other way to avoid her gaze. "I wanted to stay home and watch TV."
"You kept saying you were bored and you had nothing to do, and now you have. A whole day to explore the village you're from. Aren't you interested?" insisted the girl.
Carl grunted.
Meanwhile Gwena had already stepped out of the car and was looking around interested.

Gwena sat down on a mossy rock and opened her sketchbook, starting to draw.
Carl looked at her for a while, then wandered off. After some time he noticed an old, gnarled tree. It was really very big, and covered in ivy.
"I might try and climb the tree, I bet Aiko wouldn't want me to," he thought, still annoyed.
He grasped the lowest branch and started going up, and up, until he was lost in the leaves.
From there he spied Aiko passing just under his hiding place. "I could jump on her, she's be really scared... no, that's silly, I'd break my neck..."
Then he heard a rustle of leaves above him.
There was someone else on the tree...

A day out (2)

Carl looked up from his hiding place on the tree, and nearly fell off.
Gwena was looking at him, sitting peacefully on a slim branch.
"How... how did you find me?" he asked, amazed.
Gwena shrugged. "It wasn't difficult, you're more noisy than a pack of elephants..."
"But how did you manage to climb the tree without me noticing?" he added, disgruntled.
Gwena grinned. "I just did like the wild animals do... very quietly, to avoid hunters..."
Carl looked at Gwena suspiciously. He didn't like the idea that she was better than him at climbing... he didn't like the idea the she was better than him at anything. She was a girl, after all!
"Wanna play hide and seek?" he suggested.
Gwena giggled. "Ok... who goes under first?"
"I'll do. I'll count to... to 50" he said. He couldn't count to much more anyway.
Carl slowly reached the ground, and covered his eyes with his hand.
"One... two... three..."
Gwena looked around and saw an old hut. That could do, she decided. She ran in as quietly as possible. Inside it was dark, and dusty. Nobody had lived there for a long time.
She crouched behind the table and waited.

A day out (3)

"Forty-nine... Fifty! I come!" cried Carl, looking up.
Gwena was nowhere to be seen, but the boy was certain he'd find her eventually.
He looked around. The most obvious place was behind a tree, so he circled the nearest ones carefully. Gwena wasn't there.
Well, it was only to be expected, it was really too obvious...
Where else could she be?
Carl looked around. There was a large flat rock in the middle of a square, some old huts round it and a fence at the other end of the village. Carl crossed the square looking around. The rock was too flat to hide Gwena... maybe the fence? He peered over it carefully. Nope, not there.
He was about to turn away when he noticed a gleam in the grass. There was something shiny and metallic there! He reached out to grab it...
"I win" cried Gwena from behind him. She had sneaked out of the hut while he wasn't paying attention.
Carl shrugged and looked at the thing in his hands. It was a silver medallion, with the initials WL on it. He grinned. A mystery!
After all, the day hadn't been wasted.

Brother

Carl said I could write on his diary too.
It's very nice of him, but maybe he did it just because he doesn't like writing.
Personally I prefer painting, because it's easier to express your feelings. Sometimes it's hard to put thoughts in words.
Maybe the real reason why he doesn't like writing is that he's not sure about what he thinks...
For example, when he first arrived he was very rude to me, and tried to avoid me as long as possible. But since we visited the village he's from, he started acting nice and all...
I think I like him now, even if sometimes he still acts annoying. After all he's younger than me, and a bit brainless at times.
Now he's all excited because he found an old medallion in the ruined village we visited...

A mystery

Last week, while I was visiting the Kasiical Village, I found a medallion.
It's silver, almost as big as my hand. I'm sure it's very precious.
Maybe it was part of a pirate's treasure and was buried there ages ago!
Gwena says that it's impossible because there weren't pirates around here, but maybe she's wrong. She can't always be right...
Anyway she did a research on the village, but she didn't find much.
Apparently a small group of Hououzas built the village 200 years ago, but disappeared shortly after. The people said the place is cursed and abandoned it, so it fell in ruins quickly.
I don't think it's cursed... personally I liked it. It was full of interesting corners, and I'd like to go back there.
Oh, I was nearly forgetting... On the medallion there are two letters: W and L.
I don't know what they stand for... maybe Whole Loot? (loot is a pirate term for treasure, I looked it up on the dictionary) Or Win Lots?
I can't wait to go back and find the pirate's treasure!

Gwena's picture

It's raining.
Aiko says the weather is too bad to go out, so we're struck here. It's really boring...
I can't even talk with Gwena. She's started painting a lot, she says she's got the inspiration. I hope it's not something like flu.
Anyway this morning she gave this drawing to me.
User Image
She made it herself.
It's not very good actually, for a thing I haven't got an orange face, but she hadn't got enough pink paint apparently... I told her I liked it very much, then shut it in a drawer. Hopefully she won't notice it's not around.

Lonely

I feel a bit lonely...
Gwena's gone off with Aiko to buy some winter clothes, and she said I could stay at home since I don't like shopping and all.
Now I'm sitting in my room all alone and have nothing to do.
I wish I had a real friend... Gwena is ok, but you can never joke with her, she's so serious! And Aiko is an adult, she's not really the right person to play with.
I wish I could meet someone about my age... someone like me!
From my room's windows you can see the park, and often there are boys playing. I wish I could join them, but I don't know if I'll ever dare.
I'm sure they all have normal families, and aren't adopted. I'd never say it in front of Aiko, but sometimes I wish I had a real family, like in movies, when they're all tegether at Xmas and eat turkey and exchange presents. I don't know if Aiko can cook turkey. I bet she doesn't.

Halloween is coming...

Last week I met some new girls in the park. They were boring, I wish they were boys, at least I would have someone to talk with.
In 10 days' time it's Halloween! I'm really excited. Aiko said we're allowed to go Trick-or-Treating, this means I'll have to be with Gwena, but at least I'll have some fun and I'll get sweeties.
I wanted to dress up as a space monster, but I couldn't find a good mask. So I just put on some old dark sheets and pretend I'm a vampire. Aiko said she can draw some red lines on my face so it'll look as if I drank blood. I said I could bite Gwena and have real blood dropping from my face. Gwena didn't like it. She's going to be dressed as a witch... not at all imaginative.
I just hope it stops raining before Halloween, otherwise the day will be ruined!

Trick or treat?

Halloween has been fantastic!
Let's start from the beginning: as we planned, I dressed up as a vampire and Gwena dressed up as a witch.
Aiko said we were allowed to go trick or treating with the other boys, and we could stay until midnight. One of her friends was going to pick us up, because she was going to a party herself, somewhere in Gambino I think.
Anyway it was all fine, because we got the whole evening for ourselves!
In the beginning we went around with the other kids, but then they started asking questions about our wings. I told them they were part of the costume, but they said they weren't right for a vampire... too fluffy, they said.
So I got angry, and decided to go around all by myself.
Gwena said we'd get into troubles, but I said there was nobody around, so no problem.
We had enough sweets by then, so I decided to explore around a bit. I wanted to go to the old abandoned house, and told Gwena about it. Gwena said that old abandoned houses are always haunted.
I said that she was annoying, and that she didn't had to come if she was afraid of ghosts.
Obviously she said she wasn't scared, and she said she was coming. She's annoying like that.
