I first knew of Sonic via the video games. First one I played was Sonic 1 for the master system. I now have a fully functional Mega drive with Mega CD and 32x fitted and I have Sonic 1,2 and Knuckles. Seeking Sonic CD and Sonic 3

My dad was always a really big fan of Sonic, and we have a Sega Genesis. My first Sonic game was played on the Genesis, and I liked it a little bit. Then we got the Dreamcast and once I played Sonic Adventure(which is still my favorite video game of all time),I became obsessed with Sonic. lol xd

You have a parent who's willing to play Sonic games with you? I envy that - I really do. smile

Also have my envy, only Sonic game my dad would sit in on was Spinball, which is a welcome blessing alone, I guess.
I got into Sonic the moment my Mega Drive arrived Christmas 1991. Bought the comic from issue 1, watched the TV shows, though I never liked any of them, even at a young age (Sonic X is the best Sonic toon so far, to me) and, well... my obsession just went a bit overboard as time went on.
What attracted me to Sonic? Well, besides the Mega Drive being the first console we owned that I could claim part ownership of, therefore... you know... play? and the fact that it was the only game we had for like a year and I did so abuse that Mega Drive, it was the grandness of it all. I'd never played a game with such large sprites before, with the ability to explore a level instead of proceeding just right and right forever.
I know the younger members wont understand this, as they see Sonic 1 as a retro one hour play, but back in my day... holy crap. It was like a whole new world had opened up, vibrant colours, high speed, large sprites, cool music. It was mind blowing. Really a once in a lifetime experience, and one I'll never face again. With the PS1, the graphics were initially AWFUL, so the 2d>3d jump wasn't mindblowing, the generation jumps are just marginally better than the best of the previous gen.
But if you play Mario 3, constantly, thinking "this is the VERY best game that can be produced, nothing will ever top this" and then play Sonic 1. The difference is awe inspiring.

My parents are also mainly non-gamers, though I do know at least one person who is lucky enough to have gaming fanatics for hers. However, this measn she apparantly can't get access to the consoles herself, so I suppose my position has some advantage.
I agree with Craig, though- I remember when Sonic 1 came out (just) and it did look awfully impressive back then.

It wasn't just the look. As Craig said: the speed and whole style were a departure from any of its nearest rival at the time.
I was an Amiga owner - just having something that could go that fast without loading times made a change.

Nuala I was an Amiga owner - just having something that could go that fast without loading times made a change. The depressing thing is that this is, in a way, still true.

It was called a Sega Genesis...
And the rest was history.

I was probably three when those came out but I have a lot of them now and some of them are just as fun (if not funner) than the current games.

You won't hear any argument here. I've still got my A500 and my PC's well stocked with assorted emulators.

My first time seeing Sonic was on t.v. when I was 4. I think it was a video game commercial or something, but I didn't get to own a Sonic game until I had the gamecube. crying

I've honestly got to say I am baffled. The only thing that springs to mind is "Amiga" or "Atari" but I'm curious to know this one = 3 As for how I got into Sonic the Hedgehog? Well, I never really got into Sonic per-se as I got into the actual charm that was the supporting cast. I'm talking about one fox known as "Miles Prower" I saw this little foxie at the airport when we were on our way to Germany, way way back when issue 04 of Fleetway was on it's first release. (I think it was 04...I can't remember) Just witnessing what happened in that episode just made me fall for the fox and I've liked him ever since. From there, the like dropped as I became a Nintendo fan boy, but the like for Tails never left as when my brother bought a DreamCast back when they were a dying console I saw Sonic Adventure and just had to play as Tails again. I did...and then became a regular of the Mobius Forum. And Nuala still can't understand just how I got into it all = 3 He he = 3

Issue two, on the other hand... wink

That'll be why I didn't know of the Amiga, I was with the Atari before Dad got us our own IBM x86 computer. = 3 Nice to know I wasn't too far wrong though = 3 Issue 2 eh? I will need to go back through my collection.
