If you lift your pinkey finger when you drink something, if you're straight, which I think you are, then you should practice not lifting it, since people would think you're gay. I had to practice not lifting that darn thing, because I'm 100% straight! What else?...I think you should cover your mouth when you yawn, but I think most people do that. sweatdrop I think you're not supposed to eat until all of your food is served at restaurants. They bring all of it at the same time anyway.

If you go to traditional Japanese restaurants, they will serve your food in waves just like other countries. The appetizers come first, the first course, second course, third course and then dessert. Though if you go to regular restaurants they may serve your items all at once. To tell the difference here's a handy guide: The difference is the setting, tatami mats and having to take off your shoes=traditional vs. walking in and sitting down=ordinary.

I've heard that you should eat everything on your plate and that you should slurp some foods, like noodles.

Yep. Slurping is good. smile The food is thermally hot, so to cool it down a bit, you should slurp. It's also a sign that you are enjoying your food. heart

Well that shouldn't be a problem for me when I go over there.

I hear theres a lot of bowing involved, with like business stuff, or possibly meeting a friends family... thats all I know...
and iI think that most Japanese are not too fond of "Westerners". Lol I can tell why. Ahahah, jk.

Um...When eating, don't put your chopsticks straight down into your food...
It means offering to the dead and it may freak some people out. sweatdrop

I learned that the hard way. I did it once when I was 10 in a restraurant and everyone stared at me.... I didn't know back then. sweatdrop

Yes, don't do da the chapstick thing.
Also, don't put your elbows on da the table when you eat. It's consider a bad manners.

I think the elbows on the table top are fine. While I was there, I saw a lot of Japanese putting their elbows on the tables. I think that's more of a Western idea of propriety rather than an Eastern idea. sweatdrop

I recommend picking up the following books:
Making Out in Japanese-Revised

Funny book, but I wouldn't recommend it for the only resource XD. There are tips for example how to proceed in love relationship. Like "Issho-ni yoake no koohii nomanai?" - direct translation "Would you like to drink morning coffee together?", but the real meaning is "Let's have sex." XD

Hmm, on the other hand, maybe you shouldn't try to be too Japanese. Of course you should avoid too extravagant activities, but everybody there probably notice immidiately you're not Japanese. So if you try to copy their customs they might get annoyed. On the other hand, they might consider you a stupid Western who doesn't know anything about their customs XD. It's complicated. Though Japanese are homogeneous, they have different views on Westerns. Some of them even think Americans and Europeans are totally alike, and Americans are the evil people responsible for Hiroshima's bombing.

Heh, I visited Japan too, was it 2003 or something like it. I was about 14 or 15 years old, and it was a group of youngsters of my age which went there. We all thought Japanese always eat with chopsticks, so once we ate some meat with chopsticks. It was extremely difficult. And then we noticed Japanese ate it with a spoon! Our Japanese interpreter said something like "We appreciate your struggle, but this food is usually eaten with a spoon." xd

So the tip is to look around and although blending in is good, in the end you're not Japanese, and Japanese know it. Hope they understand it XD.

In a restaurant, you can say 'Itadakimasu' [I recieve./ Let's eat.] before eating, and 'Gochisousama deshita' [It was a feast.] (shows appreciation for the food) after you're finished. It's considered being polite.

'Arigatou' is another useful phrase ^^
Sometimes, so is 'Toire wa doko desu ka?' XD; [Where is the toilet?]

Um, also, if you get on the subway, don't turn your back to the person who's sitting
(if you're standing). It's rude and can be taken for an insult. sweatdrop

When you try things on in a store take off your shoes! I felt a little weird about it didn't want any person from my ship to run away with them. Be quiet in elevators too. My friend and I laughed our butts off in one and the people looked scared so yeah. ^^;; Don't eat on the train system. It's kinda rude. Don't sit in the elderly seats on the train system they are usually a different color. Don't tip and make sure you put the money in the tray when doing a business transaction. smile

This may be a bit too late, for for anyone else going, I stumbled upon some useful advice in another thread here.

When visiting someone's home, bring a little gift. It's like a thank you for putting up with you or compensation for intruding. xd It was a custom in America too, but fell into disuse a decade or so ago. It still happens when say, you're visiting your girlfriend or boyfriend's parent's home though. wink There's another bit of advice. Like they say, chivalry never dies.

Yes, Japanese are racist. However, they will not make it obvious, so don't worry. If anything, they'll be really helpful in hopes you tip very well.

So here are just a couple of random don't / do's

Do:
offer coffee or something to anyone who visits you.
bring a small gift to whoever you visit.

Don't:
Use plain form to just anyone. Use polite form when talking to strangers.
Point with chopsticks.
Pretend to understand something you don't. It's usually obvious.

Some things that come to my mind are:

Don't cut your nails at night
Don't put soy sauce on rice
Don't eat as you walk
Don't put a card someone gives you in your back pocket (it will get sat on which is insulting to the person who gave it to you)
Don't open wrapped gifts in the presence of the gift-giver (open them at home and thank the person whne you next see them)

Do make quiet slurping sounds when you drink something (it shows how much you're enjoying it)
Do fill your dining companion(s)' drinks instead of your own (they fill yours)
Do leave your glass full if you are done
