December 3rd, 2004. Friday.
There is a baby on the front stoop. Or there was, anyway. It would be bad if I noticed one and just left it there.
I almost did just that though. That infernal computer was beeping again (do I need a repairman?), and I couldn't sleep. Was that it? I can't remember what it was, really, but something kept me awake. After a while I just gave up and went to see if the paper had come yet. Almost tripped over some scarf on the way to the front door too. Didn't look like any of ours. But that's not important.
What's important is that there wasn't a paper on the front step. There was a baby.
I almost left it there. Just let it pass as an illusion brought on by too much to drink (though my hangover's long gone, so I'm not sure I can use that as an excuse any more). Thought that if I left it there, it would go away, and life would proceed as normal.
It was that word that got me though. Normal? Ha. As if life is ever normal. Especially mine.
He's in Eriol's room now, the baby. I should have called him a him all along really, not an it. It implies furniture and milk crates and frying pans. Inanimate objects. He's alive, or at least I think he is. The poor thing is so pale, it looks like he's never seen the sun. And he has odd clothes too. And a note saying his name is Karan. And a map.
A map showing how to get to a place I already know.
I shouldn't be surprised, really. I mean, it's happened to everyone. Buffy, Pink, Fae... But it still confuses me. They all seemed to know that someone was coming. I never did. Unless you count myself being a child magnet as knowing in advance.
Did he choose me? Or is he just one of those random things that seem to be popping up all over the house lately? The coffeepot, the cookie sheet, the giant stuffed alligator. Heck, that scarf I tripped over was probably one of them. What's to say this child didn't pop in here just like those "its?"
Or does it even matter? He's here. And I certainly couldn't leave him outside all day. He needs me, for now at least. Tomorrow I can go in and find out what this is all about. For today, he can stay here. He has to stay here.
And if he is a hallucination, so what? The others think I'm going crazy anyway.

Des? Des? Who's the sleepy one? smile
DS turned away from the makeshift crib (ie, large cardboard box) she had set up in Eriol's room. "Xue, didn't I ask you to knock," she asked, not unkindly.
Um... DID Des ask Xue to knock? sweatdrop
But Xue wants to know who the sleepy one is! 3nodding
"I wouldn't mind knowing that myself," DS mumbled. The baby in the crib was fast asleep, even though it was the middle of the day. "It looks like I'm not going to have trouble getting him to nap anyway."
Xue shuffled over to the box and tried to peer over the top of it.
Who is in the box? Xue doesn't know. confused
Des doesn't know either. sweatdrop
The change to mindspeeech was unintentional, but it made the woman release some of the tension she had been feeling since that morning, and from earlier as well. Heaving a gentle sigh, she sat down on the bed next to the box.
His name is Karan. He's a baby. And Des isn't sure where he came from.
Oh. Is she going to find out?
She's going to try to! 3nodding
Yay for Des! blaugh
Can Xue play with the baby? biggrin
Not when he's sleeping. Later?
Later? sad
Will Des and Lin and Reth play with Xue nooooow?
Chuckling, DS took one last look inside the box. The child was still sleeping peacefully. "Sure. And later, we can all go find out where he's from, how's that?"
Yay! whee
Grabbing DS's hand in his own small one, Xue led her out of the room, but not before she snuck one more look at the figure in the box.

First encounters... Karan meets Gyre and Demare
DivineSaturn DS traipsed up the road towards the HQ, cradling a small, pale baby in her arms, with an equally pale boy trailing behind her. Hopefully someone helpful would be there today. Or at least, no one would demand any baked goods. She'd been to busy to bake for weeks!
Tired of walking behind, Xue ran ahead into the building. He had seen this place before, and there were lots of interesting people in it! So Des needed to hurry up.
But in the meantime... Xue is heeeeere! biggrin
Neko Girl Demare wasn't in the mind to say goodbye as he backed up a little more, his black eye a little narrow slit with a glare, his white remaining wide open and looking rather large. He whimpered faintly, his white wing drawing very close to his back as if it would protect him. Something wasn't right with him... Lucifer Force Meh...maybe he wasn't a good one to sniff after all. There was someone else here anyway. Gyre shrugged and backed off, more because she was bored than anything else. Time to sniff someone new! She cralwed over in DS's general direction, trying to keep out of the way so she could set her Legend down. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched Demare, curious. DivineSaturn "Xue, wait for us please!" Much as she would have liked to run after the boy, it was impossible when she was carrying the baby. Still, he was asleep for now, and that was something she intended to maintain.
Unfortunately, it was something the baby wouldn't allow. Opening one silvery eye, he clenched his hands and whined softly. Where was this place anyway?
Sighing, DS joined Xue by the door. "So much for staying asleep," she muttered to herself. In a louder voice, she called into the room."Is anyone here?"
Neko Girl Demare slowly calmed down a little bit as the bird-like legend crawled away, his right eye still glaring. How... strange."Demare," Neko said, finally noticing his glare. "Calm down, hon."The little boy's eyes returned to normal as his guardian spoke, the child looking over his shoulder and blinking a few times. Had he done something wrong?"I'm here," she answered DS, waving a hand from the couch, smiling. "I'd get up to greet you, but I need to rest my back." Lucifer Force Patience waved, smiling, and made her way to the couch. "I am here as well. Lu is at home, sleeping. I'm out and about doing some shopping."Gyre reached up with her chubby hands. This one had an eye like her! She had to see this. Bring him down, please! Her mouth made shapes like words, but nothing like speech really come forth from them. "Doww! Doww peez!" she said, blinking. DivineSaturn "I wouldn't want to impose anyway," DS replied, relieved that someone was there. A few someones it seemed. She moseyed over towards the couch, yet instead of taking a seat on it knelt on the floor in front of it. Once she was comfortably seated, she gently set her charge on the floor.
Karan rolled over onto his stomach, and looked around the room, still keeping one eye closed. It looked like a normal enough room, to him. With people.
Xue wiggled himself onto the couch behind DS, and looked at the woman he was next to. She looked interesting to him, yes yes!
Neko Girl Demare looked curiously to the new baby set on the floor, his bi-colored eyes blinking in wonder. Was he going to start sniffing at him, too...? ...Wait, he looked a little lazy. Maybe he could get a closer look without imposing, then.
Cautiously, the little boy leaned forward onto his hands and knees, carefully crawling a little closer to the new child."Ne, imposing on what?" she asked curiously, giggling a little bit. "I don't believe you're disrupting anything, and if you are, it would be news to me. I don't know if I've ever introduced myself before, but I do recall seeing you around... My name's Neko." Lucifer Force Oh ho! There he was! Must now investigate! Hope he's not weird and antisocial like that other one... Gyre crawled up slowly this time, tilting her head. One eye closed? She did the same, wondering if it was some new game she had never been taught. He was a pretty color, too, but he had no wings that she could see. The other boy did, but this one did not... DivineSaturn Karan looked from the boy to the girl in front of him. Both of them looked fluffy to him, on their backs. He had fluff there too, but he could take his off. The others didn't look like they could. How strange.
And one of them was doing the same thing he was! Turning his head to the right so he was nearly on his side, he blinked and opened the other eye. Gold and silver winked back at the girl, as he waited to see what she would do.
Laughing, DS shook her head. "Better to be safe than sorry, in my opinion. And it's a pleasure to meet you Neko. I'm DS. Tell me, have you been coming here long?"
Lucifer Force Gyre blinked back, confused. Then, regaining confidence, (and spying Demare crawling near) she opened both eyes and fluffed her wings, sending tiny balls of poof into the air. Feather poof. Good stuff. Gyre giggled and clapped, wondering if the lazy one's fluff could do the same. It didn't look like wings, though, which was confusing... Neko Girl Demare watched for a moment, leaning backwards until he was sitting again, still wary of the bird girl. Two colored eyes... Just like his... His wings twitched a little bit as he stayed to himself, his hands resting down on his little feet.Neko thought for a moment. "Actually, since I don't really live all that close by, I don't get to come by here too often... Though I wish I could," she admited. "I feel bad, though. Demare hasn't gotten a chance to really make a friend quite yet, and I feel it's kinda my fault. Granted... I've only had him for about a month... I wonder if things were the same with the other Neko?"
Realizing what she'd said aloud, she blushed slightly. "I-I mean... Goodness, your baby is so cuuute!" DivineSaturn Karan's eyes widened as the girl's fluff fluffed itself all on its own. His fluff couldn't do that. He didn't know how hers moved on its own, but it made lots of other things fluffy. As bits of feather fluff floated down, he reached for his long scarf, grasping the bright orange end in one hand. It didn't look like any of the fluff.
DS blushed as well, and looked down into her lap. "Oh, well... he just showed up at my door day before yesterday. I was hoping I could find some answers here, but it seems that'll have to wait..." Eager to change the subject, she rushed on. "So, which is yours?"
Lucifer Force (( *has to go soon...late...school tomorrow...curses...curses...* Oh! I have an idea for Gyre plotty-goodness...hee hee hee... )) Patience, watching the clock, stood up. She scooped up Gyre into her arms, just as she was power-fluffing her wings for the strange pale boy. Gyre blinked, and, deciding to be polite, waved to both the boys. It was fun, short a visit as it was. But it was okay. "Bai bai..." she cooed. "Moonie...n...Blinky!" "Goodbye everyone!" Patience waved with her free hand and walked out the door. Time to do more shopping! EDIT - (( Moony = Karan, Blinky = Demare. xd )) Neko Girl "The shy one, actually," she said, looking toward Demare for a moment. "He's... ...Well, he's a bit hard to explain. Let's just put it that way."Looking over his shoulder for a moment, he stared up at his guardian with curiosity. Was she talking about him? Looking back to the other two legends, his tiny fingers began to fiddle with the stray bandage pieces on his arms, his fingers rubbing over some of the blood stains on the right ones. Neko Girl Demare watched the bird-girl being carried off, lifting a hand after a moment to wave.((Ahahaha. xd Blinky...
Sleep well, LF!)) DivineSaturn ((Awwwww... bye LF! *snerks* Moony...))
"I can imagine." From what she'd seen from these children, all of them were different, in their own ways. Still, she decided not to press the issue. "Shy isn't bad," she murmured slowly. "What's his name?"
Well, that was no fun. All the fluff was gone, and the fluffing girl had been picked up. Karan streched out one arm to wave, but it barely raised an inch above the floor before he flopped it back down with a small grunt.
Since the fluffy girl was gone, he turned his head to the boy, eyes looking at the ones that seemed so like his own.
Neko Girl Neko slapped a hand over her face, laughing nervously. "Oh goodness, I can't seem to think tonight, forgive me," she explained. "His name is Demare."Demare blinked once, beginning to realize just how lazy the child was. Now that the bird girl was gone, however... Leaning forward again, he began to crawl just a little closer to the other legend, until he was about a foot away. Sitting back again, he tilted his head as he examined the boy that seemed to resemble him.
One silver, and one gold eye... A moon pattern, and also a sun pattern? He wondered about this curiously, wondering if maybe he was lazy because it was night right now.
"He'o," he said quietly, reaching down to place his hands on his feet again. His wings drooped down a little bit, seeming to relax. Apparently, Demare seemed to do better during "one-on-one" interactions, providing he was the one to come up to them. DivineSaturn Nodding thoughtfully, DS brushed a strand of her dark blue hair back. "That's a lovely name. And you were... Neko-san, yes? I'm not good with names," she said apologetically.
Karan looked up at the boy, and finally pulled himself up to sit upright, though he was still slouching. His eyes were still watching the others, though after a moment he followed the boy's gaze back to his scarf, which he clenched tighter in his hands before looking back at the boy silently.
Neko Girl "Hai!" she said with a smile. "Ne ne, what's your legend's name? And my, he was just beautiful eyes... It seems bi-colored eyes aren't very common around here."Demare observed the other's position for a moment before he began to slouch himself, his eyes drifting to the scarf the boy clenched so tightly in his hands.
"Peety..." he said softly before looking at his feet, wiggling his toes a little bit in his booties. DivineSaturn "You're right," DS agreed, looking towards the two boys once more. "I was surprised when I saw Demare's eyes, actually. And his name is Karan." The phrase "your legend" caught her off guard, and she blushed again.
The compliment made a small smile show on Karan's lipe, though no words came out. Instead, he shoved the end of scarf towards the boy, and stroked the top near his neck affectionately.
Neko Girl "Karan?" Neko's ears perked up a little bit as she smiled. "That's such a pretty name! Pretty name for a cute little boy..."
It was quite obvious by now that the demon hanyou adored small beings.Demare almost shyed away, but he forced himself not to turning his eyes up toward the boy. To him, they were alike, both being split in a way, perhaps himself more so than Karan. Smiling a little bit, his shy nature seemed to be quickly melting away.
"'oph," he commented, tapping has hands together lightly. Looking to his bandages for a moment, he held up an arm a little bit and tapped it lightly. "c'ous." He'd added, and then stuck his tongue out as if to say they were bad. DivineSaturn DS tried to stifle a laugh as she looked up at the woman. "Yes, that's one way of looking at it..."
A frown crossed Karan's features when the boy almost turned away, but the soft smile returned when he touched his scarf. Now he could feel how his fluff felt. Even if it was different from the boy's fluff, it was still nice.
He reached towards the boy's bandages when they approached, yet upon seeing his reaction to them, he contiued forwards, trying to touch the wings instead.
Neko Girl Instinctively, his white wing began to move away a little, while his black one stayed where it was. With a little thought, Demare did his best to curl both of his wings forward for Karan to touch, feeling it was fair since the boy let him get to touch his scarf.
The two wings were very different in touch. The white feathers were soft and welcoming, not course or mused even a little bit. The black, leathery wing was soft was well, but very thin and fragile as it already bore a few tears in some spots. DivineSaturn The dark one wasn't as fluffy as the girl's wings. Or even as the white one. But it felt strangely cool as Karan patted it. He reached for the other wing, to feel it better, and tipped too far forward, nearly crashing into the other boy, but still hitting the floor with a dull thud and a soft wail.
"Oh dear," DS murmured, going to comfort her fallen charge. "It is getting late. Maybe now would be the best time to call it a night..."
Neko Girl Demare's eyes grew a little larger as the boy fell, freezing as he wondered what to do. At least his guardian was there, right...? ...Was it his fault he fell over?Neko placed a hand over her mouth, stiffling a yawn. "I should be heading home myself, actually... I didn't really realize how late it was getting."Very carefully, the little legend did his best his stand up, but only to be scooped by Neko and set in her lap for a moment. But... he wanted to see...
"Ahwahet," he said softly. "Ertheeng ahwahet." DivineSaturn Karan reached back towards the boy, yet he was picked up be his own guardian. That wasn't fair. He wanted to see the wings more. And the fall surprised him more than hurt him.
"Those two seemed to be getting along well... I hope they get to see eachother again soon." DS busied herself with checking Karan for any injuries, even though the baby seemed fine. "Xue, we're leaving."
The Porcelain had fallen asleep on the couch, and it was with feelings of disappointment that he woke up. Leaving? But Xue didn't meet anyone yet! sad
"Not my fault." Satisfied that Karan was okay, she waved to Neko. "I'd like to see you again myself, actually. And-"
Fine. Then Xue is going home. xp
Grabbing his robes in one hand, the boy stormed out of the building in a huff.
"Urm... we'll be in touch!" Shaking her head, DS hurried as best she could after the boy. "Sorry, and good night!"
((*grumbles at time* Still, this was fun. I hope we do it again soon! *poofs to bed*))
Neko Girl ((Thank you so much! heart That was fun! whee Sleep well, DS!))
"Ja ne!" she called after the woman, waving goodbye. She smiled a little bit as she noticed Demare also waving, even if it was reluctant.
"I take it you had fun today, ne?" Neko asked the child, standing up carefully and holding Demare a little better in her arms. "I'll try to come back sooner, okay? Hopefully this whole pregnancy thing won't force me off my feet."Demare's smile faded a little bit as the two began to walk toward the exit, his wings curling around his body a little bit. Hopefully, he really would get to see Karan again...

December 6th, 2004. Monday.
My so-called sleep schedule has fled. Not from Karan, or anyone. I just can't seem to sleep at the right time anymore. I have turned nocturnal. The strange thing is, Karan has as well. I'm not sure why. Am I turning him nocturnal, or is it the other way around?
We went to the HQ last night with Xue. I simply couldn't get away any earlier. Even with Kiyu here to help me, it's just so busy right now... hopefully once the Jedi girl comes and things start to settle again, we'll have more peace. Until then, we may have to settle for nighttime visits. It didn't seem to bother the people there, a woman and a strange green person and two Legends, a boy and a girl. I never found out much about the green person or the girl Legend, since they left shortly after we came in.
Karan seemed to get on with the boy, Demare, pretty well. Both of them have bi-colored eyes (Demare's are white and black), and both seem unusually pale. Karan shared his scarf with his new playmate, and touched Demare's wings. His caretaker, Neko-san, is a very nice lady too. I hope we get to see both of them again soon.
Today we had to go back, because Xue left something there, and we met a man named Airez and his Reju companion, a flame child by the name of Shen. Karan was asleep, but Xue and Shen had an interesting conversation while Airez-san and I did the same. I'm not sure I'm completely trust him. There's something strange hidden behind all that charm and smiles. Shen seemed nice enough, though when Karan woke up and saw him he seemed frightened of the Reju. I have no idea why. He's seen girls with fins on their heads and talking flying dogs and a kid who talks in his head, and he was never scared before. Curious.
He's a lot more fidgety at night now, for some reason. Maybe I never noticed because he sleeps so much during the day, but he's never really all too calm at night. Like now for instance. I hope he goes to sleep soon, since I'm trying to get both of us back on a reasonable schedule.
Still, he is a curious one.

Meeting Keita and Guinevere, and discovering EAR SCRITCHES!
Meeting ((BRIEF visit. Because people just won't let me leave.))
This time it was DS who had forgotten something at the HQ. Sometimes, she thought to herself as she slipped in with Karan in her arms, she should have herself on a leash.
Another face, this one black and furry, with a golden lightning bolt etched over one eye, peeked through the door after the woman. "Can I come in too?" A tall, slender young man stepped into the HQ with a baby Legend in his arms. He was dressed elegantly, in a poet's shirt and black slacks; his long black curls were tied back neatly. He seemed a pleasant enough young man, though handsome enough to be dangerous...but he carried baby Keita in his arms?! He walked to a sofa and set the bag on his shoulder aside, before glancing around the room with observant black eyes. Keita peered at all present...seemingly perfectly happy. Aurora's head perked up when she heard the voice. It was her good ole worrying buddy Sirus. "Sirry!" She squealed and raced to him, tackiling and smushing him against the carpet. Guinevere, as Airez was busy reaching for a book saw another lengend out of the corner of her eye. She took her fist out of her mouth and clapped both of her hands, one dry and one soggy, together and reached for the little friend. Shifting through the different books, Airez sorted which ones were interesting and which were just dull looking, Through the presence of another quickly brought on a sudden wave of cautiousness about him, causing his head to turn slightly to the side, as if looking back yet halting. For a moment, he stayed silent, analyzing somethign in his mind before looking towards the shelves once more. "Hello, DS. It's good to see you again." Of course, he couldn't REALLY see her. His back was turned to the woman after all. Instead, he turned his body slightl to allow Guin the sight of the womana nd the babe she held. "This would be another little one, Guinevere." Guinevere then saw her ear friend. She thought scritch scritch to herself and began boucning all about in Airez' arms, not wanting a story anymore but to play and snuggle her friend and her soon to be friend. "Want to go over..." asked Airez, noticing the bouncy nature of the baby he held. A smile drew about his face before walking across the room towards the tall, dark, and handsome man that held Keita in hsi arms. To this man, Airez put upon his usual menacingly neutral face, though he let it slide once he looked upon Keita. "I assume you are taking care of Keita for Britain, or I would at least hope so." Sitting down, he placed Guin upon the floor to allow her to do as she wished, then looked abck upon DS and Karan, then over towards the strange Talas that were about. "Hmmm..." Sirius was nearly bowled over by his pink friend. "Rory... yes, long time no see." He sighed, and plopped himself down a ways from the door. "I don't suppose you know then?" A depressed sigh escaped him as he laid his head on the floor. "It's nice to see you too, Airez-san, and... Guin? Does that mean Pink's here?" It would be nice to ask a friend more about what was happening. And she hadn't seen Pink in weeks. The thought made her hopeful.
Karan was awake this time, both eyes taking in everything around him. This time, there wasn't a fire kid to make things scare, so he was slightly more relaxed.
"Actually, I'm not certain she knows where we are at the moment," the man replied to Airez, flicking his hair back over his shoulder with easy warmth in his eyes. "She said babysit, I said like hell...and then she left and I didn't get much choice." Keita blinked from his carrier's arms, staring at Airez with wide eyes...and then he BOUNCED and mrrr'd and waved his little hands. Guin was here too! That meant EAR SCRITCHES!!! Guinevere crawled herself an equal distance between the two boy legends. She wanted to pl ay with both of them. She wanted them down where she was. She crawled over to her large bag and dragged it to where she was, plopping back down on the ground. She immediately began taking a few snacks and plushies out from it with which she would lure them in. Aurora frowned at Sirus and got off of him, lying next to him. "No...what happened buddy?" "I don't believe Pink is here, sorry." replied Airez to DS, turning his attention awya from the woman to talk with this dark individual. "Well I suppose that's fine enough, even if it is against your will. Though it is your will if you did so out of concern since you didn't want to simply leave the child all alone. Or else concern for your own hide as to not incur the wrath of a pregnant woman." Smiling to this little fact, Airez peered down at Keita and reached over, placing his hand upon the fawn's head, then scratching lightly behind his ears. "Excuse my words. I seem strange in teh beginning, as I've been told." "No stranger than half of what's waiting for me back home," he snorted, and shook his head. "My name is Aoshi Newark- Britain's oldest son, home for the holidays from university. The little monster recognizes you- who might you be?" EEAAARRR SCRITCHEEEEEEEESSSsssssssssssssssssssssss!!!! Keita promptly dissolved into incoherency, leaning into Airez's touch with a blissful expression on his little face. "Oh." DS didn't bother trying to hide her disappointment. Instead, she put Karan down near the other babies and headed towards the kitchen. "Where'd I put that crepe pan?"
"I'm..." Sirius struggled with his words. "I'm a... a... a GRANDPA!" Karan looked around again. There was a boy and a girl, like before, but they were different. These ones didn't have fluffy wings, or eyes like his. But they looked interesting. Still, he made no move towards either of them, and simply watched from his spot on the floor.
"Airez Ryong, one of Keita's fost uncles, as well as a foster uncle to one or two of the other children around here. I some how came into that title." spoke Airez to this Aoshi character, gracious to converse to another man rather than the usual entray of women. They were fine and all, but a guy has to talk to a guy every so often as well (To keep his sanity) "The little one has grown accustomed to headbutting my armor and getting scratched behind the ear. He'll grow to lvoe you if you do that little action alone." Guinevere, getting a little sad that Keita's attention wasn;t on her and noticing someone else was scritching him decided to focus on the new friend. She took a bear plushie in one arm and a container of raisins in the other and crawled toward him. She eventually plopped herself in front of him and held out both to him with a wide, drippiling smile. Aoshi shook his head, setting Keita on the floor near Guin to give his poor arms a rest. "He's spoiled. The only thing he wants is ear scritches...therefore, he gets everything he wants." His expression was, however, affectionate. "For an only child, I sure as hell got a lot of siblings fast." Keita blinked, shaking himself with his ears flapping as he noted his change of location. Dark green eyes brightened, and he crawled towards her quickly before snuggling. "Mrrrr!!" He glanced up at the newcomer, sniffing slightly...vaguely suspicious, in that 'omg play with me?!' kind of way. Karan looked from the stuffed bear to the rasins to the girl. She didn't have fluff at all. In fact, she looked absolutely normal. And the toy looked soft. He put out a hand to pet it, still looking at the girl in front of him.
Guinevere giggled happily that Keita was next to her and she snuggled him happily, scratching him behind the ears just a little. She didn't want to seem like she didn;t want to play with this new legend, she wanted to play with both. She put the plushie and the snack on the floor after biting off the lid to the snack and put her fist into the contain, producing a fist full of raisins. She then procedded to shove them into her mouth and chew happily, her other hand pointing at each lengend in turn and then the container saying it was ok to eat her snack. Fascinated, Keita reached out for raisins, peering closely at this new Legend. he reached out to touch the boy's hair, peering at him intently...."Mrrr?" It was obvious he was terribly curious about this new person. After all, he didn't smell like a threat...like SOME people. Convinced it was okay, Karan dropped his outstreched hand onto the plushie and rubbed it. It was soft and fluffy, not in the same way the wings were, but it still felt nice. With the other hand he pulled a rasin out of the container, but didn't eat it yet. Instead, his hand drifted towards the boy. He looked like he was pretty soft...maybe he could pet him?"I can only imagine. I think I spoiled my child as well, when he was younger that is." spoke Airez, crossing his arms over his chest and looking down at the children playing upon the floor, "Then I pretty much had to teach him that life's harder than I showed it to him. Pretty much he's learned to be more independent and self-reliant, something I'm trying to get many of my 'children' to understand and learn." Looking up once more, he sighed and turned his eyes back towards the large man, "But then again, there is little that a person can do towards a baby. You have to spoil them before they know any better." Guinievere smiled as she watched the boys take her snack and look at each other. Hopefully they were doing it in a friendly way. She saw Karan's hand and knew what to do. She grasped it around his wrist and placed it on one of Keita's ears. He would like that. He was all about the ear scritches she though, nodding to Karan as she let go of his hand. She took her little fist out of her mouth then reached for Karan's pretty scarves. Blinking curiously, Karan looked at the girl, then started to scratch the boy's ear. It was soft, softer than the teddy even, and he smiled as he kept stroking and scratching the ear. He didn't even notice the hands that were slowly moving towards his scarf. "I wish you'd raised me, I didn't get the option of being spoiled," Aoshi told him, black eyes shining with amusement as he draped himself elegantly on the sofa to watch his little brother. ""I'd have probably milked the experience for all it was worth." Keita leaned into Karan's touch, doe-like eyes pure and innocent and encouraging. He nuzzled against the boy, soft ears warm to the touch. "Mrrr? Mrrr!" Bliss....this was true happiness, for CERTAIN, when your friends taught new friends about ear scritches!!Guinevere took the side that was bright yellow in color in her tiny hands and brought it to her cheek and nuzzled against it. It was soo cool to the touch and soft, not like fuzzy soft, just soft soft. "Neither did I." mentioned Airez, standing up and repositioning his armor before looking down at the children. "I wasn't exactly gifted with such a childhood either. But I guess I compensate that with others." His head held up, the man started towards the door with his hand riasing slowly. "I must be going, it's beena long day for me and I have a little work to attend to. Until next time we meet, Aoshi. Take care of the little ones for me, won't you?"
Karan leaned carefully into Keita, taking the hand that was still stroking the bear and bringing it up to the other ear. This was much softer than the bear was, and warmer... but he wasn't so sure he liked the warm part.
He also wasn't so sure he liked the scratchy feeling he got around his neck when the girl started touching his scarf. Frowning, he took one of the screetching hands and tugged at the scarf, pulling it back towards himself. "Smiiile?" Keita queried, tilting his head at his new friend. His horn buds were soft, too...and they always itched, but this person didn't seem all the way happy...? Maybe ear scritches could wait... "I think I can do that," Aoshi murmured, watching him leave appreciatively. He smiled a bit, listening...so cute, Keita making baby talk like that. Guinevere pouted and let go of the soft, soft scarf. She took her bin of raisins and brought it a little closer to her, less likely to share so readily now that he wouldn't. She reached her fist into the raisin bin and took some out a little angrily and shoved them in her mouth, half sad, half angry that this legend didn't know how to share. After all, Prana always shared her hats! Karan coughed a little and let the scarf go, smoothing it out carefully. He hadn't minded her looking at it, but he had to give it to her, or it started to hurt. And now she was mad at him...
"Sorry guys, but I have to steal your friend back." DS smiled at the babies and picked up the pale pouting one, who had started clinging to the dark side of his scarf again. "You'll see him again soon, I promise."
Karan looked down at his two new aquaintances and waved one hand slowly. He wasn't sure if he liked the girl... but she did show him soft things and the boy's ears, so that was good. And the boy was soft and nice!
"Good night," DS murmured to the room in general, as she exited with one grumpy baby, one sulky Tala, and a crepe pan.
((So sorry for leaving this hanging... and good night all!))

December 7th, 2004. Wednesday.
Okay, he's not the perfect baby, I know that. But he surprised me today. Not with how good he was, but how fussy.
We went to the HQ quickly last night, since I had to get my crepe pan. Guin was there (but no Pink, sadly), along with another adorable Legend that I wasn't familiar with. A cute little deer fellow. We didn't get to stay long though, since I wanted to get Karan to sleep early tonight.
The best laid plans of mice and men, right?
But we didn't get that far, because I had to try and give him a bath. What on earth posessed me anyway?
Getting his shirt and pants off was easy enough. But when I tried to get rid of the scarves... I pulled the lighter end and he hissed at me. When I tried to get to the darker side, he almost bit my hand off! I was more surprised than hurt. I know I saw him showing the scarves to Demare, so why does he have a problem with me touching them?
I did, after asking him several times and getting at the boy with an oven mitt, I finally de-scarved him. He wouldn't let me wash them, so I left them by the tub. Strange though, they didn't look like they needed any washing. The rest of his clothes were soiled, but these were fine. How odd...
Then I tried to get at the belt he wore. Well, belt might not be the best term. More like belly chain. I've puzzled over it for days now. It's got coins or something all around it, and a charm in the middle. Something like a crescent moon and sun, made of what looks like bronze. Anyway, when I tried to take that off him, he HOWLED. Wouldn't let me get near it. I don't know why, I brush against it all the time when I hold him but he wouldn't let me take it off. I had to settle for draping it around his neck so I could wash him.
By the time the ordeal was finally over, it was nearly dawn. So much for the experiment in getting him to sleep on time, but I'll try tomorrow. This was more than enough for one night anyway.

Xue tiptoed into the room where the baby was. Des had told him not to go in, since she wanted the baby to sleep, but Xue couldn't help wanting to take a peek. Just one peek wouldn't hurt anyone, right?
The "baby" as Xue put it was hardly asleep. His eyes were wide open, and he leaned against one pillowed side of the cardboard box that was his bed, arms folded crossly. Who was that woman to make him stay here all night?
That woman was Des! 3nodding
Xue peered over one side of the box curiously. Was the pale one here with Des too?
Karan's arms released themselves in surprise as one boy looked at the other.
It was almost as if the strange kid knew what he was thinking. How odd.
Hey! Xue isn't odd! Xue is Xue! stare
Would the baby like to play with something? He looks awfully bored in there... sad
How he's hearing this, Karan hadn't the slightest, and his eyes widened a bit from shock. But the boy was right, it was boring in the box. Looking the boy over, he finally nodded.
Good! biggrin
Xue ran over to the shelf across the room and started rummaging around in it. There had to be something... aha! Grinning triumphantly, he returned with a large green dragon plushie.
This is Eri's. But Eri isn't here now, so the baby can play with it. 3nodding
It wasn't much, but Karan was grateful to have something to occupy him. He looked the dragon over, then grabbed it by its tail. It was soft too...
The baby is welcome. blaugh
Does the baby have a name? What does he like to do? Can Xue pet his scarf? Xue likes the moon too!
At first all Karan could do is stare dizzily at the boy and project a strong sense of NO.
After Xue let up a bit, he put one hand to his head to try and sort out his own thoughts. What was the boy asking? His name?
Karan.
Karan. That's a nice name. smile
Xue is Xue! But Xue said that already, didn't he? sweatdrop
Karan nodded slowly, then tried to ask a question of his own.
How is Xue talking to him in his head? And how is he answering back?
Well... Xue isn't sure he can explain that. And even if he could, he isn't sure that Karan would understand.
It's mostly feelings, and thoughts, and pictures, all tied together. Does that help?
No. stare
Awwwww... crying
Xue is trying, really! But it's hard. Des could explain it better, so maybe Karan should ask her.
Des? The tall lady? She doesn't listen to him. No one does. Mostly because he doesn't talk. sweatdrop
Oh. Well, that makes sense. Xue talks to everyone like this, but not everyone can talk to everyone. Xue is special. Des is a little special, but she can't hear everything.
But Xue thinks Karan's special. He's got something unique. Xue just doesn't know what. wink
Special? How? confused
Well, Karan is-
"Xue! You'd better not be bothering Karan!"
Eeeep! Time to go! gonk
Giving Karan a pat on the head, Xue scuttled out of the room. Xue wasn't doing anything...
Alone again, Karan stroked the dragon with one hand, his other lying limply at his side. That boy had sure given him a lot to think about. But it was getting early, and he was so sleepy...

The sky was pitch black. Not a single star penetrated the all-consuming darkness. The moon was invisible. On some nights shadows would show, but on this night, nothing would stand out from the blackness of the sky.
Karan held the rim of his box with trembling fingers, pulling his head up to see above it. Something wasn't right, he could tell. As he looked around the room, the quivering spread to his arms, so intensely that he had to let go of the box, and sat with a small thump.
The room itself wasn't completely dark, he knew that. Light seeped in from the hallway, throwing faint shadows onto the walls. But nothing came in from outside.
Or did it?
Slowly the darkness from the window stretched itself further and further into the room, obliterating the shadows one by one. It was almost as if the night was tangible, a solid, possibly living thing that cast out all traces of light.
The creepy shadows were bad enough. But this was much worse. Karan looked around for something to hold, scrambling for some base comfort. His hand brushed the two dragons he'd gotten the other day. One light, one dark. Whimpering, he stuffed the dark one under a pillow. There was enough of that in the room already.
The darkness advanced further into the room, creeping slowly across the floor and up onto the bed. It stopped just short of the box, wavering, as if it was waiting for something.
Was the big black shadow going to grab him too? Not able to watch anymore, the Legend shut his eyes.
That was worse. The darkness WAS solid now, and nothing he could do to break out of it. With a cry he tried to open his eyes again, but they remained shut tight, as even blacker shadows paraded in his mind.
A vague silhouette. Female. Young, by the looks of it, with long hair. She moved gracefully, even though she carried a cumbersome bundle in her arms.
Another, this one male. Taller, more muscular. He had grace as well, but it was tempered with strength, both of the mind and the body.
The two figures approached eachother. The woman held out her bundle. The man leaned in eagerly to see it, then lept back in horror. He pulled a knife. The woman, scared, tried to plead with him. The man shook his head and thrust his blade into the woman's chest. The bundle dropped from her arms as her body jerked violently, then went limp.
It kept falling, past where the ground would be, right out of sight if it had been normal. Falling without end.
Suddenly, there was a flash of light, one that made Karan wince from the pain, and the bundle was gone.
"Light has control over darkness..."
Karan fought to open his eyes, but they stubbornly stayed sealed as an unearthly voice echoed in his mind.
"Without light, darkness cannot exist..."
What could that mean? If there wasn't light, there was darkness. Confused, he stopped fidgeting and listened.
"It is the same in the heavens..."
Was that voice in his ears, or in his mind like that pale boy? He couldn't tell.
"The moon only shines because of the sun. Without it, there is only dark, cold, pain."
Karan's eyes flew open. The room looked just as it had before the darkness had come. Even he was the same, still shaking.
He didn't know what the voice was talking about. The only thing he knew was that whatever he just saw and heard scared him more than anything.
"MWAAAAAAA!"

December 11th, 2004. Saturday.
I have no idea what got into this boy. It was night, and I left him in the bedroom. I thought he was finally sleeping. Maybe it was just wishful thinking. He looked asleep, but looks can be awfully decieving.
Anyway, I was talking with Yeine in the living room. Something about today... I know she went to the academy, since she didn't want to come to the HQ with us... but she met Eragon there. Not surprising. But she said he said (gah) something about looking for Eri.
Just when I was going to ask about more, there was a shriek from the room. Eriol's room. Karan's room.
I have never seen him so scared. I've only seen him scared a couple times actually... something Demare was doing that scared him, and when he saw Shen, Airez-san's ward... but he was shaking all over. His eyes were wide open and strained, and he was mumbling something to himself. I couldn't understand anything of it. Probably just baby talk. Something about "Know chay?" Was he saying no?
He was actually happy to see me, for once. His arms reached out to me, but dropped before they got anywhere near. Was he weak? And what from? We hardly did anything today?
Weak with fear?
I think I'm going to have to go buy him a dreamcatcher tomorrow. Not that it'll do much, but it couldn't hurt anything except my wallet.

"WHAT?" Eriol looked from Yeine to Karan, and back to his godmother. "So you're saying this'un-" he jerked a gloved thumb at Karan, who stared back at Eriol unblinkingly, "jus showed up on the doorstep? And that girl, 'Eragon's friend,' 's a Jedi who's stayin here? Moooom..." The teen buried his head in his hands, long strands of brown hair covering them to the wrists. He didn't mean to be so dramatic, but how could she not tell him!
Yeine flinched. Had not telling him when they first saw eachother been a bad idea? She didn't want to overwhelm him... but then again, that's what she was doing now, wasn't it? "I'm sorry," she whispered, tail drooping.
"Now Yeine, it's not your fault." DS put one hand on the Cathar's shoulder, the other settled neatly onto her hip. "And Eri, don't call them 'girl' or 'kid' or anything. This is Yeine Nalari, a Jedi apprentice, and that's Karan, a Legend. And both of them are staying here. Now please try to get along while I make dinner, okay?" Shaking her head, she headed into the kitchen.
Eyes narrowed, Eriol looked Yeine up and down. "Ya don't look all'at strong. Are ya sure yer a Jedi?" He didn't mean to sound insulting, but she didn't look nearly as strong as Eragon did.
"... I'm still learning," Yeine murmured, her eyes fixed on the floor. "I'm sorry I don't look strong to you, Eriol-niisan..." Much as she tried to stop it, a lone tear trickled down her cheek. She tried to make a good impression on her housemate, but he seemed to hate her.
The show of sadness startled Eriol. "Whoa there... I din't mean to make ya cry or nothin! I was just askin..." Letting his head rest on his folded hands, he continued in a softer voice. "I'm just not used ta havin ta share my Mom THAT much, ya know?"
This time it was Yeine's turn to be startled. "I don't want to take her... she's just helping me out is all. I'm worried about fitting in too..."
Karan didn't like being left out of the fun. He yelped and raised his arms, waiting for the fuzzy girl to pick him up.
Instead, Eriol lifted the boy from his chair and cradled him. "And you... yer one of those weird kids from that place Mom bakes, aren't ya?"
What was he saying? And how come he was holding him! Karan started to wiggle, but stopped nearly as quickly. He... kind of liked this guy.
"You're a funny little fellow, aren't you?" Eriol smiled, his first genuine smile in months, and flashed it towards Yeine. "Was she... ya know, worried?"
Yeine nodded enthusiastically. "Oh yes... she said she'd been looking for months... I was starting to worry myself."
Even the new girl was worried? "Is that right?" Eriol whistled. "I guess it's good I came back then..." He grinned and tickled Karan's stomach.
Karan let out a shrill giggle and wiggled, trying to avoid the hand but stay seated.
"It is good, for everyone I think." Yeine smiled at Eriol nervously.
The scent of tomatoes and cheese stopped all conversation. "Okay guys, it's pizza time!"
"PIZZA! Now THAT I missed!"

For some reason, this day seemed better to Karan than most of them. All the people around him were happy, and there was a big sparkly tree in the middle of the big room, and everything smelled good. And he got new toys! The stuff he wanted to see actually had stuff INSIDE it that he could play with, like the shinies and the squishy toys. And two even had stuff that moved! The lady took those away pretty fast, but he had a plan to get back to them soon.
Still, even now that it was late, and everything had calmed down, he had a overpowering sense of cheerfulness about him. The other pale boy that he now shared a room with had long since gone to sleep, and he was the only one keeping this twilight vigil. Why, his only company was the moon.
He looked at it. It glowed comfortingly back at him, looming larger and larger as he stared at it. Brighter too, though never intrusively so.
It in fact, began to twinkle. It shimmered, with a light that nearly seemed tangible, and extended right through the window. The shine started to stretch and shape itself, extending in ways one would not think possible.
Karan watched in wonder as a woman stepped out of the light. She was tall, much taller than the woman he lived with, and much more beautiful. Her skin was pale, like his, but it radiated beauty. Her hair was long enough to reach the floor, even from its multiple buns, and looked as if it was spun from pure silver. Despite her simple white robes, she looked like a princess. The only odd thing about her was the fact that if one looked hard enough, they could see right through her to the wall behind.
Eyes wide, Karan reached a trembling hand towards the apparition. "Mwaaa," he whispered softly. He had seen this before.
The woman smiled. "So you remember me. This should make everything easier, my son." She stepped towards him, her feet soundless on the wooden floor. "I was afraid you had forgotten." One arm raised, the colorless silk falling back to reveal a silver bracelet with a brilliant white stone on the center. It reached towards the boy's head to stroke his hair, and despite the woman's transparency, did so with ease. "You look well, Deram."
Was that his name? It wasn't what the woman he lived with called him, or anyone else. He tilted his head questioningly, all the while enjoying her touch.
"It is your true name. The one I gave you when I first saw you. But you wouldn't remember that, no." The woman's face looked angry, but only for a fleeting moment. "This time, what name came with you?"
He tried to think of what the lady was asking him. His name? He didn't know that... or did he? The woman called him Karan, right?
Again the woman looked troubled. "Your mind is disjointed... Karan. Something has happened to you. You will have to work to get it under control again. But worry not my son, for I have faith in you." Her hand followed the small curves of his infant body, finally coming to rest on the sun-patterned scarf. This time her anger was more difficult to conceal. "Has he seen you yet?"
Had who seen him? He couldn't think of anyone strange who had. Except the darkness... but that wasn't a person. He looked up at the white lady again, clueless and upset about it. He couldn't help her.
"No, he isn't dark. He is light. Burning, relentless, merciless light. He is not your friend, though he will claim to be. Be careful."
Now Karan was confused. Wasn't the shiny lady light? And she was nice...
She shook her head. "I can only reflect... I show light, but have none of my own. He controls it all, never letting me-" The woman paused, as if she had said too much, and took a moment to collect herself. "If he comes, you can use this to tell me." A pale hand slipped into Karan's box and vanished among the pillows. Before she could withdraw it, the arm attatched started to dissipate, the light flickering out. "Remember... I will always..." One more bright flash of light, and she was gone.
Yet even though the woman had vanished so suddenly, Karan was still happy, and remained that way until he fell asleep on top of the pillows, whatever the lady had put between them all but forgotten.
