Lyra sighed as she dished out more bread and soup.
"Ever since ...that night... you know Sokra has been more wihtdrawn then he ever was. But lately he's fallen into a very angry mindset. Any little thing can set him off. I don't understand it. Why has it hit him so hard all of a sudden? It's been ten years..."
All this she spoke in a low whisper, not wishing to upset her troubled son. He had been the light of her life for so long, it hurt her to see him so wounded. She had hoped, seeing his friend here, laughing and talking together over breakfast, might bring him out of it.
It apparently hadn't worked.

Sokra dashed forward, deep within the forest, his sword Ar'konis flashing as he beheaded a devil, and kicked the legs out from under an imp. Lesser forms of the demons his father had faced, he had stumbled across them as he headed for the grove where his father had died. He stabbed Ar'konis into the imp's head, then spun around and blocked as a devil slashed down with a serrated sword. Sokra pushed the blade back, then cleaved the devil in half. He spun around at a new noise, but all he saw was a blue-white wisp in the form of a human. He almost said the word 'Father', but he could sense it wasn't. The spirit drew up to Sokra, growing a face out of the mist, and punched Sokra in the face, sending him flying back several feet. Sokra groaned, roared, and swung Ar'konis at the malevolent spirit, but the wisps just parted and re-formed. The spirit drew closer and Sokra was helpless before it. More devils crowded around, with a few smaller imps with them, and Sokra knew he was outmatched. The spirit punched him again, but this time he rolled with it, and as he came upright, he began to change. A beard sprouted, lining his mouth and reaching down his chin. His hair lengthened greatly, and he drew bigger in height. Ar'konis disappeared, and from a blue-black light drew the swords of his father, Brood and Scythe. The being Sokra had become hefted them, and stared at the spirit, which cowered before it. "Come back to haunt him, have you?" He said calmly. "HAVE YOU ALL?" He shouted, and the forest grew with innummerable spirits. "HAUNT ME! YOU WANT ME, NOT HIM!" And 'Sokra' charged them, carving open the first spirit, which disappeared, and he turned to face the rest. An imp rushed him while a devil attacked from the back, but he sliced the devil without looking and kciked the imp hard enough to snap it's neck. He charged forward, his father's swords ready.

(O_O The picture you chose for Lyra is the EXACT SAME one I picked for Arinoa.)

Lyra gazed with out the window after her departed son, but Sokra had already disappeared into the shadow of the forest. After pouring his friends one more glass of cold water, she asked them, politely, to come back later.
"I think he needs space now. I apologize for having you come out here, and having him...like this, I don't know what you might want to do, but I think I'll head into town for now. Maybe when I get back, he'll be himself again."
She swept up dirty plates, depositing them in the wash basin. Shouldering an all but empty pack, she bid Aintur and Kalei goodbye, and stepped out onto the path. The strange noises emanating from the woods she put off as just her imagination; too much stress.

(BTW this is medeival times, since it's set after Dragon's Roost, Twilight Fire, and Arinoa's Legacy. That's a biggo coincidence. o_O And though that was the best picture I could find of Lyra, Lyra has red hair. Yeah. info bleep completed)

The spirits faded back into nonexistance. The ground was littered with the bloody bodies of imps and devils, which were fodder compared to demons, even the Grunts. They were nothing compared to Leapers, though. And Leapers weren't even that strong! Zero could take out them so quickly, being able to overmatch their speed. "One hundred down," Sokra's alter form said, "Sixty billion to go." The hair of his face started receding, and the extra size and longer hair almost seemed to dissolve and fly away as fine powder in the wind. Sokra, back to normal, collapsed to the side, blacking out. As he closed his eyes he saw the faces of many, and he couldn't recall any of their names. One of them had his face.

(I figured. Yeah, it's weird, isn't it? Ooh, ochay. I like red hair.)

The well-worn path that she followed hid in the outstretched shadow of the trees. Lyra passed oak and elm, birch and ash. She could hardly remember where she had learned their names. All her life she had lived in one place after another, until settling down here, with Kamiss, and rising their son Sokra, and the trees of her home had imposed themselves on her life so easily. She depended on their solitude, and had always valued their counsel as she loughed through the hardships her family had experienced. She whispered, now, a prayer for only the trees to hear, that her son would make it through his torment.

The other Sokra moved in close, and whispered one word: "Ranam." It faded into nonexistance and Sokra woke with a start. "Ranam... Ranam..." He said, and stood. His eyes widened in understanding. That was the name of the power Kamiss had called on. What did it have to do with Sokra?

Lyra returned home an hour later, fresh tea leaves in her pack and a lighter outlook on life. It was always good to spend time in town, with other people. She saw that the house was empty, meaning Sokra had not returned and his friends had left, perhaps to find him. She cleaned off the table, putting all remaining dishes in the washbasin for later, and took up her normal seat in the window. She watched for her osn with baleful eyes, knwoing that spending time in town could not erase the emotions and terror her son had gone through. No, it only soothed her soul, and only for a short while.

Sokra stumbled into the house, clutching his forhead, a look of pain on his face. "Mom." He said, looking up. "I don't get it." He slumped into a kitchen chair. He turned to look at her, eyes searching. "What do you know about the Ranam?"

(You prolly don't know the family history behind the Ranam, so I'll PM you.)

(Is this okay? I tried to tell it the best I could.)

Lyra's muscles tensed, sending a shivery ripple down her spine. Though she had known, one day, he would ask this question, she had thought it would come much later in his life. She turned to her son, sat down across the table from him.

"How did you come to this name? How...ah, but never mind. You were ready to know." She hesitated, then ploughed on. It was easier to speka of it if she did not pause.
"The Ranam is a complex thing. A force, if you will, that is contained within those touched by a demonic power or curse.. Your father had...possesion, I suppose, is not the right word, but close...of this power. I had hoped you would not know of it yet, nor come to be under it's power. But without your father here, the only way you would know its name is if you had experience its flow."
She sighed, her hands twisting and rubbing in nervousness.
"There, also, is a guardian that comes with this power. Until now, he would not have shown himself. You may see him soon..."

She grew weary of this speech. It was hard on her, to accept what her only son would become with the introduction of the Ranam.

"Dad called the Ranam the day he died. It was what killed the demons; it was what killed him, too. In the forest today, I found devils and spirits, malevolent ones. My blade could do nothing to harm them, and I lost conciousness. But when I woke the last few were dissapated, and the ground was littered with blood. And while I was asleep, I heard one word over and over and over... Ranam." Sokra looked Lyra in the eyes. "Two years ago I met a girl named Arinoa. You met he once, I think. And back then, the same thing happened to me. I blacked out and everything around me was dead when I awoke. I was walking to new locations by morphing through the shadows, and black fire could be sprung from my palm. It has ceased now, but these things happened to Kamiss, my uncle and you, too. You all are similar... What happened? Why are you as you are?"

(Sokra knows nothing of the demon wars. You can tell him part now, partially lying, or he will be told all later.)

( gonk As my mind is almost comletely frazzled due to molevolent cousins and cute guys giving me candy, I'll pass on telling him now, okay?)

"There is a reason all this has happened, but I am not the one to tell you. As your mother, I could not trust myself to speak only the truth to you. In sparing you from knowledge, I would in the end damage our trust. So I cannot say a word of it. Believe me when I say, though, that you will know all, in time."
She sighed, and turned away from her son. It was hard to deny him what he asked. He had been through so much, so young.

(Okies, no problem)

Sokra nodded, taking her words to heart. "There's one thing Kamiss did not know about the Ranam." Sokra said, standing to leave. "It is not only the power of the mind, but the power of the World. Cannon, Kamiss' father, had a little of each. Kamiss had the psionics. And now I am going to start developing the World's power." Sokra closed the door behind him. "I need to go talk to Raiynoc."

(Yeah, by "he has not shown himself, I meant he has not shown himself as a guardian. I did remember you already knew the dragon, it just came ou t like I didn't. sweatdrop )

Lyra watched her son walk from the house, a sigh escaping her lips.
So much trouble. And now the powers that had hurt the family so much through it's protection had passe don to her only child. But she was not one of those coddling mothers, who clung to childhood. She accepted that he was grown, and could make his own choices. She had to, and willingly would, let him find his own way.

(Aha, sorry, couldn't help the reference.)

(Its OK. But also, maybe you were speaking in riddles. I do know Raiynoc, but I may not know he is the guardian. I may 'meet' him--his guardian side--soon.)
