Akkido Umashido well, from my understanding of the series, every time the Kyuubi heals naruto he also shortens his lifespan. Its a lot like the 5th hokage's Rapid cell regeneration technique. Every time the Kyuubi heals him it burns through more of Naruto's life force. Not to mention the same thing happens when the Kyuubi takes over Naruto's body. So if Naruto doesn't stop using Kyuubi's power it could end up killing him. Not to mention if the seal breaks or is released, the power could be too much for Naruto's body to handle. That is so true.

The way i understand it so far there ar two parts to the kyuubi. Naruto taps into the yang portion but the yin was sealed by the 4th hokages seal. The 4th did that for reasons which still havent been truly shown, but what we do know is that in the end naruto is suppose to complete a jutsu that involes the kyuubis chakra.
Also it only shortens his lifespan when he is using more than 4 tails. Because his body is completely covered in the fox's chakra, it is constantly destroying and healing his skin, therefore shortening his lifespan.

i think the kyubi is an enemy, it's just keeping naruto alive so it can stay alive and one day take over
