A mysterious, yet handsome man lurks in the shadows and watches the goings on in the wagon.

A small figure climbs to the door of Rusting Canvas. She turns the parcel over in her tiny hands, making sure it's the correct one. Satisfied, she leaves it on the doorstep, wrapped cozily in purple cloth and tied with twine. Inside is a gift for Van D'ien, a charm on a black leather string:

Her gift-giving done here, she scuttles off to finish her night errands.

Ki sat back, a smile on her face as she looked down on the neatly coiled ropes. She wasn't proud at the amount of time it had taken her to untagle the ball, and the fact that they had been so tangled up in the first place was nobody's fault but hers, but she WAS proud of the fact that it was done. That second set of harnesses had been rotting away in one of the cubbies in the wagon for what seemed like ages... and what was it that the old man in the last village had said? ... something about taking care of the leathers... and that could mean anything. She sighed... that's what prophecies were... anything.
Van D'ien tunneled back further into the blankets of his bed, all his muscles (small though they were) coiled in anticipation of the danger he knew was out there... he had heard it! A solid scraping on the floor of the wooden wagon as he attemped to sleep... it was some kind of predatory animal he knew it was, and it took almost all his common sense and wits to not whimper out in fear... better to stay hidden, surely, just in case the monster didn't yet know he was here... And then, without warning, the covers of his bed were being rooted through, and he found himself screaming... making a horrible noise that no mole should ever be able to make... and then he heard a voice dimly over his fright ... "Van, stop this... You're hurting my ears and scaring the horses..." He vaguely recalled what it could be... and then "VAN!" ... he stopped his high pitched squealing and looked up at Ki with squinted eyes... she smiled down at him and then tweaked his nose in admiration... "No more of that, you got me? You're not in danger here... and you're certainly not in danger all trundled up in your blankets like that..." ... and he found himself nuzzling up against her hands as she held him.

Caroline and Rojiza have decided to go for a little walk while the wagons are camped for the night, see if anyone else is outside. It had seemed like everyone had kept to themselves for the last few days? weeks? it was so hard to measure the time's passing in woods like these. Their efforts are rewarded--Ki and Van are sitting outside their wagon. Ki seems to be fiddling with something; the creak of leather says 'horses' to Caroline. Caroline hadn't talked with Ki since...a long time ago. A very long time indeded--back when Rojiza was still a squirrel.
Rojiza peers curiously at the little mole. It'd been...ages since she'd seen Van. She remembers poking at him when she was still a squirrel. Odd how the meij worked with the Fortunette children. She'd gone through two major changes, and Van is still a mole.

Ki turned as she heard a slight movement behind her. It wasnt' that she was scared of noise, just that of late, she'd nbot really been around other people.... but once she looked she saw that it was only Caroline and she found herself both sighing at the fact that she was about to have company, and smiling at the thought of it being someone she already knew... less work with introductions that way.
Ki grinned and flung a muddy leather strap down onto the ever persitant pile of tangles, stood and wiped mud off her hands with her skirt. However all she managed to do was get more mud in more places. ...
Van, on the other hand, turned non-existant tail and fled into a nearby blanket that was crumpled on the ground for him.

"Evenin' then, Ki," says Caroline. "It's been a while since we've last met, mm?" she states with a smile. "I see your wee mole hasnae changed a bit." Directing her speech toward the blanket now, "It alright, wee one...'s only me."
Rojiza, meanwhile, ever the friendly, had crouched down near the blanket, and peers at it in an attempt to see Van.

Ki smiled good naturedly but held back bitting remarks in response to Van's growth, or lack there-of. "So, what's the news since I've been gone?" She knew deep down in her heart that it was all her fault that Van was still a mole... and she hated herself for it.
Van D'ien tried to gather all the corners of the blanket in his claws but missed monumentally, and Ro succeeded in pulling up a corner of the hideaway. The little mole turned and looked up at her with squinted eyes and meeped in surprise.

"News, news," mutters Caroline. She sighs heavily. "There was some...trouble a while back with the wee winged beasties." She drops her voice so Rojiza, preoccupied with Van as she is, cannot hear. "Ye ken...faeries. Best not be mentionin' it around Ro. She blames herself for all that's happened." She throws a tired, sympathetic look at her daughter, holding up the corner of a blanket with finger and thumb.
The small noise emitted from the blanket elicits a giggle from Rojiza, a sound not heard for many weeks. Carefully, slowly, and with a friendly smile, she squats down to the ground and puts her other hand out in an attempt to pat him on the head. Mother had taught her to be gentle with timid creatures, animal or otherwise.

Van was not really inpressed... He liked his solitude.. though... There really wasn't anything threatening about this squirrel girl, in fact quite the contrary. She seemed familiar. He squinted up at her and meeped again, this time more as a question.
"Ah." Ki nodded and starred down at the tangle of leather... probably best to just cut it all up and scrap it. "Yeah, kids do that... blame themselves I mean." Though. "Not Van really. Being a mole, I'm sure he understands most of what I say, but not much of it at the same time." She wiped an oil covered hand across her face and left a mark. "I probably should go and have a talk with Val... about him still being a mole I mean."

Caroline nods. "Aye, that ye should. Val will know what to do, and if she's busy, go an' see her sister Oqaia." She nods again. "She's learnin', but quickly, she is."
Rojiza smiles and gives Van a friendly scritch on his head. She sits down, cross-legged, inviting the little mole to crawl into her lap.

(( TIME JUMP xd ))
Ki kicked at the door latch to try and close it better, but her hopes of gaining on the simple lever latch weren't high. THe stupid thing had been broken forever it seemed, and she COULD fix it, she was just too lazy to bother, really. She glanced down at the wagon wheel, where there was a blue blanket curled up and leaning against the front brake. It hadn't moved in at least a half an hour so Ki reached down and poked it with a sigh. "You still alive?"
The blanket gave a wail of protest and poked back.

[Leeeet's doooo the tiiiiiime waaarp agaaaaaaain. :3]
Caroline and Ro had visited Ki and Van D'ien once or twice before, but not in recent memory. And Ro had expessed interest in visiting other caravan members. Caroline had just chalked it up to one of her daughter's many eccentricities. "Ho there, Ki!" she exclaims. "Whot's the news with you?"
Rojiza looks around for Van D'ien, who was far more interesting than the adults. She wonders if he's in the wagon, but Ki would be making too much noise for him. She sees a pile of blanket leaned against the front wheel and smiles. Slowly she walks over to it and sits down on the hard dirt ground. She takes an edge of the blanket and peeks beneath it.

Ki leaned back in Mid-kick and smiled as Caroline approached with her daughter, Ro. "Not much on news I'm afraid." She paused and firmly pressed on the, just enough that it barely held shut. "What's new with you?"
As the blanket was pulled down a small mole-boy appeared with an expression that can only be held by beings whose glasses make their eyes seem to be the wrong size for their head. He glowered up at her for disturbing him and didn't seem to care that it wasn't his 'mother'. He only cared that he had been disturbed. "No!" It was one of the few words that the mole knew, and he used it often.
