No, it really didn't. I can give you a detailed explanation of why.

It's full of "purple prose", the plot was too predictable and boring, the characters are 2-dimensional, and it ripped so many things off wholesale that it's not even funny. It's fine to borrow other authors ideas and change them to make them your own, but Paolini just took names, plotlines, and ideas whole cloth. There is not a single original idea in that entire book.

I completely agree with you, Saeric.

Eragon was one of the WORST books I have ever read in my entire life. I was stunned because everyone was calling it the next HP, and I thought I'd give it a try.

I was so horribly dissapointed. I know HP isn't the most intellagent book, but at least it's original. Eragon ripped off The Dragonriders of Pern and LOTR so much I wanted to stab my eyes out. Also, did no one catch how horribly it was written? It was like reading one of those "Jane can run" books for preschool kids.

I know, you'll all come back at me with "But he was fifteen when he started writing it!!"

Yeah, that's great and all, but he sure as hell wasn't fifteen when he finished it, and he damned well should have gone back and re-wrote it through before he published it.

I couldn't finish the thing. I got about half-way through (it didn't take long, there weren't many complicated, adult words to work through rolleyes ) and then threw it across the room in frustration and fury.

What absolute CRAP.

All hail these two speakers of wise words. I'm in full agreement with you two, there is absolutely nothing original within the books, and the language used in it is so basic I'm amazed that the books are half as thick as they are.

And just to prove the point, my dad has been a long time fantasy reader. He's been reading fantasy and science fiction since he was young, and he's over 45 now, so that's a lot of reading experience, and like me he never completely forgets a story he's read.

He read the Eragon books, and then Eldest, and he swore to me he read Eldest years ago, before either of the books was released. He couldn't tell me the title of the book, we're both bad at remember that long term, but he could lay down all the points where the two books were exactly alike and the very very insignificantly few points in which they were different.

My point is, the books copy so much from other books that Paolini might as well be copywriting them over.

That said and back to the main topic. I think that if you ignore any relations to the book the movie was quite alright. Really, the only major point of complaint anyone's ever raised against it is that it doesn't follow the book, but this does not make it a bad movie.

It's not a book people, stop expecting it to be like one.

Here, here!

You know, I watched the movie, mainly because my mom read both Eragon and Eldest and wanted the movie for her birthday, so I caved in and not only bought it, but watched it with her as well.

I couldn't finish the movie. Although I wasn't as bored with the movie as I was the book, I still wasn't able to finnish it. With all the publicity and money the books pulled in, they could have at least spurged on some decent actors.

I hadn't had a chance to watch Eregon, but my brother, who introduced me to the books, warned me it wasn't very good. I'll try watching it without thinking of it as associated with the book. Have to do that with a number of things--like the any of the sequels to Highlander. talk2hand

As to Eregon/Eldest being a reprise, haven't you heard that EVERY story being written today is just a twisted reprise of an older story, myth, or legend? It's just a matter of writing it in such a way that it entertains enough people to make it worthwhile.

We're not angry that Paolini used dragons and elves or whatever. Creatures like those have been used very offten, but people CAN write about them well. Paolini.. can't.

We're angry that he obviously read series such as LOTR, Dragonriders of Pern, and other such stories and took all the characters and abilities, squished them together, gave them new names, and then wrote one of the most dissapointing, uninteresting fanfiction the world has ever come to known.

HOW was it able to possibly catch anyone's interest? I was so bored I had to force myself to finish half, and that's not an easy thing for me to do. Usually, I finish books once I start them, even if they're not that great.

Erigon was worse than Twilight (Which, actually, wasn't as painful as I was expecting it to be. It was the sequels that had me gaging). So that says a lot. There wasn't one original thought to that story. He didn't try to bring any sort of twist to it. It was predictible, the characters were flat and unimaginable. The way they talked wasn't constent, it was full of plotholes that would fit my wiast through, and I was extremely unafraid and unimpressed with both the evil creature things and the magic system.

Don't even get me started on the oh-so-obvious DROP stealing.

Ugh. Sorry, I got carried away.

My point is, we're not angry that he's useing mythological creatures, we're angry that he's not using them WELL. And then being compaired to Harry Potter. *shivers*

Here's the reason it caught interest- it's an easy read. It takes what other books use and basically translates to a more simple version that works with the day and age.
I'm of the same mindset as all of you- it's a giant web of cliches that are too simple to really be considered a novel, more like everyones imagination.
