bassmule teenageZOMBIE--x Too me,emo is a genre of music and nothing else. It has slowly become a childish and shallow label for people who arent like everyone else. It started out as emotive rock, a subgenre of music formed out of rock, softcore metal and punk. But now its become something entirely different. Since when does skinny jeans, dark hair, chucks and a band shirt equal to 'emo'? Thats just a fascist stereotype. Now everything seems to be classed as 'Emo' clothes, hairstyles and colors,shoes,bi-sexuality and depresseion..all these things that have nothing to do with what emo is suposed to be. What the ******** is Softcore Metal? neutral And just to correct everything you just said, Emo developed out of the DC Hardcore scene in the mid 80's. It has no connections to Rock, "Softcore" or any other kind of Metal or any other genre. ********, I wish people would stop trying to explain it when their idea of Emo is what they hear on Victory records. emo is/was short for emotive hardcore. how can you say emo has no connections to rock?! almost all good music comes from rock, without rock we'd have nothing

To me I think emo is both style & music if your talking about now ((as in recent today)) Back then I think it was just music but now ppl have created some sort of a style to it (( if you consider it part of emo))

Emo has no direct connection to Rock, ******** obviously without Rock there wouldn't be Punk, but saying the two are connected makes no sense. I could say Emo is connected to 18th century minstrels because without them music wouldn't have evolved as it did.

Half assed poseur Metal is called Half Assed Poseur Metal, it's not called Softcore Metal, nothing is called softcore except for porn. Lets recap Emo's conception: 1984: Husker Du release Zen Arcade and show its ok to play Hardcore and sing about introverted feelings. 1985: Rites of Spring release their self titled cementing the concept of introverted feelings in Hardcore songs. Other records you should listen to so you have the basic understanding: Portraits of Past - Discography Hassan I Sabbah - Discography Heroin - Discography Saetia - A Retrospective Navio Forge - As We Quietly Burn a Hole Into (more Post Hardcore than anything but still very deeply rooted) Usurp Synapse - This Endless Breath, so you have an idea as to what Modern Emo is. Skip ahead to the mid/late 90's with bands like Saetia, yes they don't sound like tradition Hardcore, thats because back in the early 90's Emo bands started experimenting with different styles of melodies and some Grind elements. Now unless you can prove to me these other "influences" I'll know you're wrong and don't know what you're talking about. Well I was gonna post, but now I'm scared! :: shiver :: sweatdrop

Honestly, to me emo is all about the music, and all its amazingness. It just really depends on the person, to some its just a style a way to be cool(im not saying everyone does it to be cool im just saying some people) sure Its somewhat gotten off track from what it used to be, all about the music, and is now mostly "oooo Style style" but it doesnt change the fact that the music is and prolly always will be the best part.

I called you a douche because your making this out like it's a big thing. Woop de doo,i had a different opinion to you and said emo has rock influence. Guess what cuntstains? It does. It can't just be a form of hardcore, otherwise it would just be hardcore..not emo. The lyrics are more like melodic rock and gothic. The music has influences from hardcore, metal, rock and punk. Listen to it,it's not all just hardcore. And you can't classify music into a specific genre based on what it started as.The music has changed a lot since the 80's. So stop making out like this is a big thing and don't harass.

It was a sub genre(meaning it differs slightly from the root genre it resides in) of Hardcore that evolved out of the scene designated by it's attention to introverted lyrics, over aggression and sense of melody. The lyrics are not Gothic, Gothic lyrics are melodramatic and romanticized, or is your idea of Goth Evanescence? How has the music changed since the 80's? It went from Hardcore to...hmmm Hardcore? Explain to me how Emotive HARDCORE sounds like anything but Hardcore? I've given you examples, so prove to me where these Metal and Rock influences are?

Emo was once just about the music, that's what any "style" was about. It was a group of people who enjoyed a certain type of "art". Nowadays, stereotypes have taken over and everything is "this way" or "that way". Personally, i have to say i don't understand any of it and if you asked me what a certain "style" was, i'd have to shrugg and tell you to ask someone else because it really is just what you believe it is or are led to believe it is. Nothing is really definite anymore because idividuality has taken hold and people are more of a mix of things, "mutts" if you will and maybe that's what these "styles" are, a mix of music, style, and personality to create a way of life. confused

Emo= A clothing style and a music genre.
Personality wise: If you're depressive then it means you have a disorder, not that you're in a clique.
