ShePlaysByEar Bassoon240 ShePlaysByEar Bassoon240 ShePlaysByEar Bassoon240 Yup, I'm a college bassoonist, I'll be a sophomore when the next semester starts. I've never played on a Jones reed, I take it they aren't that great? How long have you been playing? Well, you know, any store bought reed is bad because they are made by machines without any knowledge of who's gonna play on them. You have to slice them up to fit your individual style. Anyway, I'm a sophomore in high school and I've been playing since 6th grade... about 4 years. So take or leave what I say, because I obviously don't have your experiance. sweatdrop 3nodding You are right that they have to be cut up, I just didn't know how much adjusting you had to do for Jones reed compared to a Danzi...What are some of your favorite pieces of bassoon music you've played so far? Well, I've never had a Danzi so I don't know... Music? Let's see... last year one of our concert peices was called "A Movement for Rosa" and I had the bassoon part in the bassoon-alto sax duet at the beginning. I liked that one. This year we're working on a peice called "Festive Overture" which I'm really excited about. There's not a whole lot of imagination in the bassoon part, but I like it a lot anyway. I haven't really done a lot of bassoon solo peices, and the bassoon ensembles I've been in weren't anything special. But what about you, musically? Let's see...I recall sightreading "A Movement for Rosa" for ensemble contest my junior or senior year, I remember that it was a really nice piece. A couple of my favorite band pieces I've played would have to be Holst's "First Suite in Eb" and "Lincolnshire Posy" by Percy Grainger. Both are wonderful pieces, especially if played in a smaller group. Some bassoon pieces I've played are the first movement of the Weber concerto, Telemann Sonata in F minor, and the David Concertino. I've never heard of any of those... but I didn't know you could play "Rosa" in an ensemble... what instruments were there? Ah well. Have you all gotten your concert music yet? It was a band arrangement, it had a part for every standard instrument you'd find in a symphonic band. I haven't gotten any music yet for my next semester, as of now I'm not in a band, the head of the music department kicked me out and is forcing me to go to orchestra starting next semester.

Personally I hate it, and I just write the notes above my music. I have to stop that tho, because my ensemble peice has tenor clef on my part.

Now that I'm very comfortable with it, I don't mind tenor nearly as much.

The part I have with tenor clef doesn't go up higher than G, so it's totally unnessicary and stupid. stare I'm learning it though, because I know I have to.... bleh.

My band director put me on that part on purpose so it means he wants me to. I hope I can play it better next week than I did this week.

I learned through a game on the computer a few years ago...I've tried relocating it again for a friend of mine, but so far haven't had any luck. Basically the computer would pick a note randomly on the tenor staff and you had to say which one it was. That helped me quite a bit. If I happen to find, I'll make sure to tell you where it is if you're interested.

Maybe it's a company that makes them for different instruments?

I am an oboist ( of three years) and a bassoonist (of two years) and a clarinetist (five years). I mainly play bassoon now, along with piano (six years). Marching bassoons and oboes don't really exist, since they're too expensive to afford dropping and outside weather makes it go bad...somehow. Therefore, I use clarinet during marching season and bassoon and oboe for concert season and piano for jazz band.

Marching Band: Let's not even go there. I detest marching with an oboe, so thank god I don't have to do it. Concert Band: My favorite oboe solos are in two different pieces: Variations on a Korean Folk Song October Reeds: I use Vandoren reeds, medium hard.
Also, how high can any of you other oboists go? I can get a high (second above the staff) G out.
