16. Questioning

Maybe running
wasn’t a good idea
after all.

17. Blood

Asking the men for gas was easy, the hard part was getting the courage to walk up to them and be willing to give them something in return. Lily dealt with this better than I did. She figured she did it once, she could do it again. I didn’t want there to be a second time. Eventually she told me to just wait in the car.

I watched her strut towards their vehicles. I don’t know why she felt the need to put on a show. I knew she was just as scared as I was. But for some reason she refused to show it. That was always her weakness. She never let people touch her soul. Her body was something else though. There had been more fingerprints on her body than an inkpad at a police station. And that didn’t make me love her any less.

After we got a full tank of gas, Lily decided to ask one more man for some money so we could buy something to eat. That turned out to be a mistake. I don’t really know what happened because a really good song came on the radio and I had closed my eyes to feel it. I wish I could have felt Lily’s pain; I would have stopped daydreaming. All I remember is the song coming to an end and hearing a car speed off. I opened my eyes and Lily was laying on the ground in front of me. I ran over to her and just stared.

“I’d rather have him beat my body instead of breaking my heart.”

I paused for a second and replied, “maybe he just couldn’t find it.” And at that moment I wasn’t sure if I was talking about him or me.

Rainbows
didn’t seem special
anymore.

19. Gray

Gas masks
have become important.
(Anything to clear out this smog.)

They’re little girls
with dolls
dressed in carbon monoxide.

Dust
was still
looking to settle.

And
stairs
have been hard to find.

If a car
drives fast enough,
maybe time moves on.

(I’d hate
to be stuck here
for much longer.)

We seemed to have
developed a grey
(or was it grave?) disorder.

Holding hands
had become
important.

21. Vacation

Quickly, a drive to
the nearest city became
a long vacation.

22. Mother Nature

Lily joined Eshana who was sitting in the grass.

“What are you doing?”

“Making a cocoon.”

“That looks like a knot.”

“Maybe to you it does, but to me it’s a cocoon.”

“Ok, you’ve officially lost it.”

“No I haven’t. When I was a little girl I used to sit in the grass on my grandpa’s farm and make cocoon’s all day. Then, when it was time to go I would spread them around the grass and leave. I believe fairies are born from them which is why I call them cocoons. They don’t come out until you leave though, because they don’t want you to see them. They lose their magic if you do.”

Lily moved closer to Eshana, “teach me how to make them."

Technically this is non-fiction because what’s discussed in this piece is actually something I’ve done and believed in my entire life.

23. Cat

He’s my love
but not my lover.
Only she can claim that title.

In animal symbolism, a cat represents many different things to different cultures. Some of which include: guardianship, detachment, sensuality, desire, liberty, pleasure, magic, and lust. So that is how this fits the theme.

And yes, there is a difference between being someone's love and being their lover. A lover is much more intimate. There's more passion. There's more everything actually. Everything is intensified.

24. No Time

The walls have started to close in. She’s starting to look ill. (I’m not sure if this is new, or if her body is just catching up with her mind.) She scares me sometimes. Last night she stood on the edge of a cliff and told me she felt like flying. I thought she might jump. (We have been searching for freedom.) She lost her balance and fell backwards. She muttered under her breath that she wouldn’t make that mistake again. If she hadn’t of scraped her hand, I think she would have got back up and jumped. (You can’t fly with damaged wings.)

We need to get to wherever we’re going. Freedom is tempting, and I don’t think I can hold her back for much longer.

25.Trouble Lurking

Today
even flies
looked like monsters
big enough for your closet.

26. Tears

The clouds were orange
her cheeks
were wet.

27. Foreign

Lucretia is on an airplane somewhere
with her mustard seed
and army of bees.

(If the colony is low on food
the male is eaten.)

Yellow
is an important colour
these days.

(Life
would be much easier
if it could be bought.)

Her fishing line
can be seen
through the haze.

(Lately,
it’s been holding
her together.)

A sundress
hides
her red knees.

(String cheese
has begun
to unravel.)

It’s a shame
her airplane
crashed into the sea.

28. Sorrow

My days
have become molasses;
they drag on
and everything sticks.

I long for honey;
for the dripping
of sweetness
to never expire.

Lily and I
are a mess.
This trip
has lost its purpose.

We shouldn’t have run.

Now
we’re stuck
in this dead desert
surrounded by quicksand.

And
no one
can hear us
sinking.

29. Happiness

Give me liberty.
Give me a chance to be ******** clean.

Some random thought that just popped into my head as I was about to lay down in bed to go to sleep.

For some people, this is the meaning of happiness.
