Kaleb chewed on his lip a bit, obviously distressed at the turn the conversation had taken. If Rufus was opposed to magic, then why had he been hired for his magical skills? Wouldn't a doctor have been better in that case?

"O-oh," the little healer said quietly, feeling a familiar knot of anxiety work it's way into his stomach. Without his magic, he was essentially useless.

She had calmed ever so slightly by this point. Enough that when she paused to consciously calm herself down she noticed Kaleb was even more quiet than usual. Her face fell into concern & she reached out gently to touch his arm. "Kaleb? Sorry I went off on you there. Are you all right?"

Kaleb jumped a bit when she touched him, but he was able to look up and give her a weakly reassuring smile. "Y-yeah, I'm okay. I-I'm just a little nervous, I didn't know Rufus had that kind of opinion towards magic."

The pictomancer in her WhiteMage robes tilted her head thoughtfully at her friend. "First name basis with him, are you? That's interesting."

She tapped her chin lightly. "Maybe because I was female..." She flushed as she shook that thought away. Horrible of her to think that concerning Kaleb. She really liked the innocent minded scholar. He was refreshing. Relm gave him a soft, reassuring smile. "He's likely the type that would change his stance on something if it suited him. I suppose you did something with magic that suited him, did you?"

Her tone was gentle but for the slight choke to her words. She did not like to be snubbed, and it seemed clear to her that the president of ShinRa Electric had done just that. Not that it mattered anymore, but the artist-mage had her pride.

"H-he hired me to heal his Turks," Kaleb said quietly, feeling rather reassured by Relm's softer tone and gentle smile. He didn't feel like he should mention that he was practically kidnapped and brought to the office that first night, he didn't want to worry her. "He's seemed satisfied with my work so far."

She smirked slightly her head shaking the tiniest bit. "I'm sure you do a great job Scholar. Better probably than they deserve." Although she had found Reno's company amusing at the Halloween party; even with this uncouth description of her infatuation with his boss. "Turks they're called? Four of them? Or only three?"

It was one of the curiosities she had from painting her dark work. Relm knew which form was likely Rufus' & which likely Tseng's, but the others left her uncertain. Especially the one that had a feminine feel, less darkness, & seemed distanced from the others. The one that didn't seem to belong or was only a memory -something not clear.

Kaleb blushed at the compliment. He wasn't sure how much he should be discussing his work, especially with the kind of things that went on in that line of business, but he didn't think Relm would do anything that would get him in trouble. "I-I've only met three, b-but there could be others." The small mage would have felt weird mentioning that he had been told he was one of them as well, so he just left it at that.

Curiosity abated for the moment she patted his arm kindly, a surprisingly gentle look in her light green eyes. "You're being careful, aren't you Scholar? They're dangerous you know." Her eyes took on a faraway look just before closing. "I don't know anything concrete... just what I saw...." Her eyes fluttered open flashing with the vibrancy of her thoughts. "I know it's the truth somehow, even if I can't explain it. There's a Darkness about them, Scholar."

Now her expression was concerned once more. "There's a Darkness... just don't let them snuff out your Light."

Kaleb shuddered a bit, remembering that one job they had taken him on, and how awful the nightmares were afterwards. He still had bad dreams every now and again. "I-I know they are dangerous, but I-I really had no choice." He nervously chewed on a thumbnail.

Relm gazed pointedly at him. "You always have a choice, Scholar. Albeit, I'll admit with them it's probably a bit more difficult." A wry grin touched her mouth. "I get the impression they have their fingers in more pies than we'd want to think of." She laughed a bit but her eyes were kind and almost understanding when she tried to catch Kaleb's once more. "Look, I understand their appeal. Not long ago I would have wanted to be in your shoes." Relm scoffed lightly, thinking that if Rufus had not so grated her ire she might well have thrown herself at him. Now she was very glad she had not. "If you like them that's a different story, but don't believe you have no choice."

Making sure she had his eyes on hers Relm added. "You've lots of friends, Scholar. If you're having to do anything you don't want to, come to us. We'll help." The flash in her eyes clearly indicated what she did not say: they would fight for him.

Kaleb blushed brightly, but he couldn't help but look up when Relm said she would have liked to be in his place. "I-I don't think I understand, th-they really scared me at first." He glanced down with an embarassed expression. "I-I don't think I need to be rescued though, I'm not really afraid of them anymore." No, it was the things he would be exposed to on the job that really terrified him.

Relm ducked her head sheepishly, to hide the flush that warmed her cheeks by letting her hair & hood cast her face into shadow. "I, ah, have -had- an odd fascination with things dark & mysterious." She lifted her head to give Keme a half smile to be admitting this -something she had only told Keme & perhaps Trelweny before now. "And I met them in a park, perhaps even this one. There was nothing in their polished facade of crisp business suits to more than hint at darkness & fair smolder with mystery." The wry look on her face bespoke how she thought of her foolishness that day now.

Shaking her head to clear those thoughts she smiled softly once more. "As long as you know you've a choice, Scholar. I'm not going to try & dissuade you or even make you think ill of them." Relm chuckled softly at that. "In fact I rather enjoyed talking with Reno at the Halloween party. For the most part."

Raising a brow at Kaleb she smiled. "But if you find yourself in a bind, give me a call. I'd rather answer a request from you than a summons from that full-of-himself, makes-himself-off-to-be-only-an-executive new boss of yours."

Kaleb fidgeted nervously. She certainly had made it sound much more mysterious and intruiguing than he had felt it was when he was dragged out of his apartment that first night without his shoes.

He stayed silent, he was glad she wasn't trying to turn him away from them. They were nice to him, after all. But her words did make him nervous, was it just a summons he answered when he went to heal whomever it was who needed healing?

Accustomed to doing a lot of talking it took Relm a while to notice that Kaleb was unusually quiet. Perhaps not for him, but Relm glossed over that notion in her concern. She watched him fidget, her head tilting as she wondered what the white mage was thinking. "Scholar?"

She smiled sheepishly. "I've been yapping your ear off. Guess I got carried away again." That ws probably the closest she would get to an apology, though she was better at them now than she had been when they met. Keme had something to do with that.

"I-it's okay, really," Kaleb said quickly, smiling a bit. "I never really have much to say anyway." He couldn't quite subdue his fidgeting though, inside he was a little confused and a little unsure of himself. Being pulled in two directions left room for a lot of self-doubt.
