The campaign to save the spirit bear is the most supported conservation initiative in Canadian history - the result of millions of supporters signing petitions, sending e-mails and faxes, and writing letters in support of protecting the spirit bear. In Canada, a recent poll declared that more than 90% support the protection of a large wilderness sanctuary for the bear - with 69.4% strongly agreeing and only 7.4% disagreeing.

The vast majority of British Columbians support the spirit bear as the mascot for the 2010 Olympic games and it is now one of two animals short-listed.

THE SPIRIT BEAR animated movie will help bring the bear to the world and give it a voice - literally. The movie is the first Hollywood production in history to be made specifically to save its namesake, with part profits being earmarked for economic diversification projects in the region in order to build economic and community support for a spirit bear protected area.

ANOTHER ANNOUNCEMENT, BUT STILL NO ADDED PROTECTION FOR THE SPIRIT BEAR

The federal government announces funds to save the "Spirit Bear Rainforest", but only reinforces protected areas created last February; Green watershed still unprotected and slated for renewed logging.

Sunday, January 21st - Vancouver - Canada’s "new" government announced plans to contribute 30 million dollars toward protecting the "Spirit Bear Rainforest", completing the land-use plan announced last February 7th by the BC government. That agreement, while accomplishing a great deal for many coastal stakeholders, did not save the spirit bear. And today’s announcement, while positive news, does not create any additional protected areas or seek to find a solution to the logging currently taking place within the spirit bear’s last intact habitat.

Last year, with much celebration, the BC government agreed to a new vision for the BC coast - one that was ratified by a selection of stakeholders representing the region’s vast interests. The deal expanded on a previous coastal land-use plan, signed on April 4th 2001, which sought to permanently protect vast portions of the BC coast, including two-thirds of the spirit bear’s last intact habitat. But the final third, an area known as the Green watershed, was not protected and this past fall, logging began, raising questions about the future of BC’s official mammal.

Today’s announcement of 30 million in federal funding matches the BC government’s contribution of 30 million and the non-profit community’s pledge of 60 million. The total 120 million fund - called CIII (Coast Investment Incentive Initiative) - will be used to help stimulate economic diversification within coastal communities, in order to offset the cost of the new protected areas. A worthy and important goal - one the Youth Coalition has promoted since the start of this campaign, more than one decade ago.

However, just as the economic bottom line must be met, so too must the spirit bear’s bottom line. Through three announcements, an ecological deficit persists in the last intact habitat of the spirit bear and though a viable economic alternative to logging this one last, small area remains on the table, logging is still slated to recommence this spring.

After the federal government’s press conference, the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition did have an opportunity to meet one-on-one with the new Canadian minister of the environment, John Baird and present the case for protecting the Green watershed for the spirit bear. The meeting was positive and the Youth Coalition hopes that continued discussions will eventually lead toward a resolution to this ongoing dispute.

While the spirit bear remains endangered and though today’s announcement does nothing to address the current logging in the Green watershed, this issue remains in the public spotlight. And certainly, the bear’s political capital remains high - few policy decisions have the luxury of three glitzy press conferences. And the Youth Coalition intends to use that capital to keep reminding decision makers that more work remains if we are to say with confidence that the spirit bear will forever be wild and free.

The Spirit Bear Youth Coalition congratulates all involved in today’s announcement and will continue to be the spirit bear’s advocate: giving it a voice, asking questions on its behalf, and, of course, work toward protecting the final third of its last intact habitat.

This remains, as a society, our opportunity. This remains our responsibility. This remains our spirit bear.
