Erik posed as an angel to get near her. He manipulated the management and cast to get her that one night of fame.
Raoul had known her before then. They'd known eachother since they were children and had fallen in love then. Raoul had been dragged to the Opera by his brother after years of being with the Navy and had even seen her before she had her one night of stardom, he never had honestly approached her before then, or had tried to unsuccessfully.
Not only that, but with the scandal of a Viscount marrying a mere dancer (who, in those days, was seen as no better than a whore) he would be sure to lose his family's money and title. But he was risking it all for love!
