My older son, who is Virginia Tech and can't find sweet tea anywhere there either, formed a theory his freshman year. He blamed it on the "minions north of the Mason-Dixon line." rofl

It's because of the influx from the North, East and West. Too many military bases and the political folks around DC. They off you tea with your choice of sweetener (or not). THey don't seem to realize you can't really sweeten it after the fact!

I'm from Indiana & I never got sweet tea til I came down here...but it makes perfect sense! Why on earth don't they sweeten the tea when it's hot up north? They can still have unsweetened for those who need or want it so!

Chief Chaos Dr. Browns Black Cherry! I love them all but artificial sweeteners are a must at this age. Sweet Tea is the only kind of tea. They make spinache water up here. When I remember the tea we would get in Callabash I want to cry! Spinach water is the best term I've heard yet for what they call hot tea up north. I feel you on that one. I'm originally from Alabama, by the way.

Eirwyn It amazed me to find that you can hardly get sweet tea up on the Chesapeake Bay! Virginia is the South, so what's up with that? Virginia isn't really the South. Sure, it's past the Mason Dixon line, but it's sort of neutral ground culturally. Northerners think it's like the South, Southerners think it's like the North.

Soda for me... Cheerwine and Sprite are the favorites.
Yes, sweet tea is great. I was sad a while back when I wen to the Outer Banks and NOWHERE had sweet tea. It was like we had taken a portal out of the south. Granted I like some of the northern tea with various flavorings in it too... But unsweatened, UGH, no.
I always find it funny to talk to a friend from up north. And they are like: "I've had southern sweet tea, but it's just too sweet!" ...........And you expected what, sourness? smile

Actually, some places DO make it too strong & too sweet. I like it about honey-colored & moderately-sweet, myself.
