Now...I will keep my mouth closed about the USSBA judges (because I think some very colorful language would come out) but how the hell does this happen?

They use double judges and we were put in 2nd and first place for all of the areas...except for one. He put us in 8th. Because of that we were bumped down to third place.

How the hell does that happen? I thought we had a 2nd place show because it fell apart completely in one part. Not 3rd and certainly not 8th! It doesn't seem right.

colorful language indeed =)
one of the head judges told the judge that marked us down: "if [my bd] had a knife, he'd use it" rofl, but the judge still stuck to his score

that's happened in nearly every comp so far. Whenever there are glaring errors, we do awesomely. But, whenever like 3 people made tiny little mistakes we lose. It really tends to piss off the band when we fix our errors from the last show then our score goes down

oh yeah. that really sucks. mad stupid judges
All the noob judges tend to just give points to their friends though. Like for us it's always the same bands that win. Our BD got pissed of cuz he says that one of the 4A bands should have won sweeps, and we should have gotten a higher ranking in 5A, but the judges would go "oh no, we can't let a 4A band win"

. . Keep in mind that you're only at a part of the field. You may have marched well, but I know from experience in a band of 300 people that you never know what goes on in the press box. From where you are, timing errors are hard to find. Also, all of the drill and music counts as well, even if you didn't write it. And acting like a college marching band... DDDx Especially if you're a high school one! I don't understand it. No wonder some bands got so many points taken away. >.<

s n o w

We watched videos of every show afterwards.
1) There was no way we lost in music. The band that won had such horrible intonation. and the judge that marked us off in his tape was like "uh.. the woodwinds should uh.. try to hit those high notes" dude, it's called Leonard Bernstein and dissonance. that guy doesn't deserve to be a judge

2) The visual. ok look pretty much every band did a scatter drill. the visual judge only took off 40 points for US. the other band that won didn't march any better than us. let me put this in perspective.. band that won: 174. us: 109. and trust me there was NO BIG difference in the actual marching. the tapes prove it.

Gotta love that composer of West Side Story.....that stuff is some of the hardest music I've had to play...I don't blame you, that judge must just not have been able to recognize it or something. stare

lol when we played this in concert band last year I was still on contrabass clarinet, so after playing a year of armenian dances on a Bb clarinet, it seemed like a piece of cake. but then again, I was playing the barisax part

but yeah.. our director was a bit unsure about whether or not to change our parts in the second movement.. because there's a flute solo where the soloist is playing a concert ...F, and everyone else is playing a high concert F# and it clashes so much. But then he decided not to because he was like 'whatever, the noobs probably can't even hear it anyway' xp

Ahhhh! The sweet sound of dissonance! Something that I love and hate about Leonard B. is his use of it...it can sound awful and good...and sometimes awfully good. But going from a low expectation middle school and jumping to 9th grade and doing W.S.S. was a little challenge for me....oh the naiveness of being a freshman...good times... wink

lol I loved freshman year. I couldn't play the band music cuz it was way too hard for me, even though I was a pretty good player in middle school Our marching band piece helped me improve so much, it was unbelievable

We had a judge at Area who had a grudge against us because of Mr. Fariss.... But Mr. Fariss is retired!!! GAH!!!

Also, at BOA we placed 10th because a prop (the stage) was too tall and it wasn't all "pretty." stupid BOA. We don't need you anyways.

I think that you'll find that many judges are not "unfair." While they may care about the school they come from, they really want to do their job to their fullest. I've talked to some judges, and they (honestly) do not care where you're from. They rate your show. The judges are actually very hurt when people say they are biased toward one area/band over another.

That's not to say that there aren't judges with bias. If you have a biased judge, you can challenge it, and it will influence the score a bit, but to have an entire panel that is biased against you is almost impossible.

Just in case this was a response to my statement, I never said the whole panel was completely biased. there's five judges minus one auxilary = 4 band judges, and I'm just saying that two of them were. that's all.

oh not necessarily biased, just stupid.

Yes the judges were majorly unfair. Our band is like awesome and we have made straight 1s at state festival for seven years in a row. It was my freshman year and we had practiced this music so much. I could play it perfectly with all of the dynamics even making a few myself with my eyes closed. We sounded awesome!!! When we got to state though we did not make straight ones. We got a 2 because one of the judges though SECOND bands should not get straight ones!!!! We were robbed of our eighth year in a row and I now dislike judges greatly!

oh my gosh yes!
so last year our band got superior with distinction at this competition, then the next week we went to U of A band day and our rating was good.
our band director was so mad that he literally threw the plaque away
he said the judges were idiots and that we were amazing
he also says that we're never going to perform at that band day ever until he recovers sweatdrop

Oh yeah, my band has definitely had an unfair judge before. Yesterday, as a matter of fact.

We're a fairly good band (we won a championship last week) and we were competing in a different circuit this week. We were the second band on in our group, and everyone said that we had an awesome show. We took third place in the competition, which isn't bad, but the thing is that we should have taken second, at the very least, if not first. That's not saying that the first place band wasn't good, because they were. They took best music and best percussion, we took best overall effect, best visual, and best auxilary. And they definitely deserve best music.

But the fact of the matter is: all of the judges scored us in first, except for ONE judge who scored us in LAST place for EVERYTHING. Even one of music teacher, who was actually a judge for the competition after ours and was in the stadium, said he had never seen a judge so royally screw up a judging before.

All right, that's the end of my venting. Sorry if I came off as arrogant or something like that; I'm still pissed about it.

yeah i know what you mean. at grand nats this year we were in 7th during pre lims and then after semis we were in 14th. and our show was way better in semis. we dropped a full point and lets just say im not very happy with how the BOA judging is more of a judges opinion and not actually representation of how bands do.

at a drumline comp. last year, the judge switched the names on our score sheet and another line's cuz he decided he wanted them to win, not us. so we ended up with their score sheet. needless to say, we diddn't go to that comp this year.

For one of our competitions, we had to borrow some wind players for pit...(it's a percussion feature), and the sousaphonist who plays cowbell rushed.

We were .13 off from the first place Percussion trophy.
STUPID...

They should know that low brass people can't keep time well!
(well, in our band anyway...)

A score tabulator messed up at one of our competitions. Everybody at the competition dropped about 10 points in finals, which was completely wrong, since we knew we did better in finals. It was really bad for the last band, since they ended up in the 30's (and in all my four years of marching band, I'd never even heard of scores in the 40's).

Our drumline got screwed this year at one comp. This year, we have a really good drumline, but our pit sucks. So at this one comp after we were done doing our show, the drumline instructor said to them that they did the best show that they have ever done ("That was the s**t!"). Then came awards. We were not called for 3rd, 2nd, or 1st for Percussion in our division. Most of us thought that they had won Sweepstakes. Then they call out Sweepstakes. It's another band. They got a 91.something, last week they had gotten a 70.something!
The judges said that our drumline was amazing, but we did not place because of the pit!

Also, our cross-town rivals won Sweepstakes almost every time last year and they were in a division higher than us. This year we are in the same division and we think that a lot of the judges have a bias towards them because they won so much last year. A lot of people this year who saw their show and our say that our show was really good and their show was just okay. Every time that we were in a competition with them, they always placed higher than us, usually by one place. And at championships (it was our first time there) they got 1st and we got 5th. I hate when people have a bias.
